Ubuntu :: Proper Mouse Function Only When Holding Shift?
Mar 24, 2010
I just installed Ubuntu 10 as a dual boot with Windows 7. I was using it for a couple of hours (and really liking it) when all of the sudden the Ubuntu Software Center stopped responding and I was unable to click anything.
After logging out of my account I noticed I had proper mouse function. I restarted the system and noticed the same thing happening when I logged into my account.
Basically what has happened is that I have to hold the Shift key down in order to press application buttons, like "OK" and "Cancel".
If I click on a link in firefox nothing happens. I need to hold shift and left click to follow the link, which of course opens the link in a new window.
If I try to right click on the desktop nothing happens unless I hold shift.
I looked through the mouse and keyboard settings and did not notice anything odd.
on desktop, my mouse works normal. i can open programs normally, BUT, when i try to click inside some window, pointer turns into closed hand, that symbols dragging. i can move the window that way, but can't click anything except when holding shift, alt or ctrl.it's probably my fault, but i don't remember pressing anything different than usually. oh, and, it started in the middle of the session, i tried to reboot several times, tried recovery too, after that updated but no help there.i was looking for solution on google but can't find anything for days, i cant think of anything but reinstallation
I currently use a laptop (win vista was the original OS) and I decided to get rid of it. So I tried Ubuntu, bam, no pointer, I changed yesterday for Kubuntu and the same problem goes on, invisible pointer. The mouse is perfectly working it's just I can't see it on the screen. To get even worse and make me want to throw my computer through the nearest window, with kubuntu I can't use the same trick as with ubuntu, I mean I can't locate the mouse by holding the 'ctrl' key.
It's a very common problem with VIA/3 chipsets (which is the one I have) and I also read it's often a bug with OpenChrome and to fix it I may have to modify the xorg.conf. But here's another issue, my xorg.conf file isn't in the same folder as for most of the people: instead of being in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, it's in /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.conf, and, which is most, it ain't even named xorg.conf but xorg! Besides, I can't modify the file to enter a command that may be a solution because when I try to save my modifications, it tells me I haven't the permissions and I can't get it to run in root.
About a week ago I did a fresh install of Maverick on somebody else's laptop. Everything was fine at first, but a couple of days ago the person contacted me saying that they weren't able to move or resize windows anymore. (The only thing that does work with respect to moving a window is initializing the action by pressing Alt+F7.) Later we found out that they also can't drag and drop files or use the mouse to drag scrollbars up and down. So basically, they can't do anything that is usually done by holding down the left mouse button and moving the pointer. I've already tried the following things to make it work again:
- playing around with the mouse settings
- checking in CCSM whether the 'move window' and 'resize window' plugins were enabled
- setting desktop effects to NONE in the visual effects tab in 'appearance'
- using compiz fusion icon to (1) reload window manager and (2) switch from compiz to metacity for window management
- deleting folders containing GNOME settings from home folder (.gconf, .gconfd, .gnome2, .gnome2_private), logging out and back in afterwards to automatically create new configuration files
I've been doing a lot of googling about this but I'm running out of ideas. Most people (there don't seem to be that many) that have had a similar problem are saying that it's got something to do with compiz, and disabling it solved the problem for most of them. But in my case - no dice.
I first noticed this problem when trying to play a first person shooter game. If I hold a key down such as "w" the mouse glitches and moves incredibly erratically when I try to look around. This happens outside of the games as well. What is the solution for this?I'd really like to be able to play an fps game.I have tried disabling compiz as well as turning off the "disable trackpad while typing" option as well.
I have a trackball with only two buttons. And I searched for a way to scroll (wheel simulation) with the trackball.
I already managed to emulate the wheel when holding a trackball button (eg, the right click). I succeed using xinput as described here. But clicking on the right button when rolling with the same hand is not very easy (indeed it is even difficult).
And since I have some media keys (XF86 on the far most left corner of my keyboard it could be very convenient if I can simulate the wheel using a key press.
Unfortunately the evdev option "Option "EmulateWheelButton" allows only to use a mouse button no key from keyboard.
So I found a way to map a keyboard key (in my case the "Audio Player Next Track" shortcut) to the right click using the three steps [URL]..... So pressing the key actually triggers a right click and this works very well ... with two exceptions .
The first one is that I don't know why but this completely disabled my numkeys (the numpad at the right end of the keyboard).
The keys control the mouse. After I checked under the "universal access" I saw that "Control the pointer using the keypad" option was checked. But this could not be a problem and I could be satisfied without the second problem..
Which is that my keyboard simulated right click do not actually enable the wheel emulation since the rightclick should be held down...
When pressing and holding down the real right button of the trackball it works. Even when holding the right click with a regular mouse.
But using my shortcut key I'm unable to generate a keydown event.
Is there a way to map the keyboard key and the mouse button like this :
a key press => a regular right click a key down => a held right click a key up => a right click release
I have successfully mapped the plus-minus key on the keyboard to emulate the Wheel/Middle Mouse Button click with this shell script run at startup:
Code: #!/bin/sh xmodmap -e "keycode 49 = Pointer_Button2" xkbset m
This is so I can rotate the view in Blender without clicking the wheel, because the wheel also zooms, and it's too easy to zoom inadvertently. The remaining problem is panning, a Shift-MMB combination. Now I'm lost - how can I map a key (or better still, a Shift-key combo) to the Shift-MMB click?
trying to config compiz shift switcher for use with mouse.i want it to initiate for all workspaces by clicking the mouse wheel i know the following:
button 1 is left click button 2 is right click button 4 is scroll up button 5 is scroll down
so i assumed that either button 3 or 6 might be scroll wheel click apparently not i know that the scroll click works on my mouse in ubuntu anyone know the correct button number, or if it is 3 or 6, what i am doing wrong ?
I am using ubuntu 10.04 and have a problem it seems no matter what joystick I plug into ubuntu it wants to treat it like a mouse. I have no idea as to why this is but it is quite annoying. I searched the menu and have yet to find the ability to disable using the joystick as a mouse function.
I've run in to one problem which makes me go back to Windows 7,and that's not being able to change my extra mouse buttons to function as volume up and down. I watch a lot of movies and series on my PC, and I use my wireless mouse to control volume and to pause and play. The last 2 are no problem, but I can't seem to find an option to change the function of the extra mouse buttons.I've looked all over the net, and read various forums, they don't have a clear answer or even an idea how to accomplish this. So I turned to this forum, which I should have done in the first place.
I found the paste function of the center button is really annoying. Usually I use the center button to scroll up and down inside an editor, but when I scroll really fast occasionally I would press down the center button. The editor ended up paste whatever on the clipboard. Is there a way to disable it? I want the center button to function only like a scroll bar, no paste.
I'm trying to install wireshark on Fedora(latest version with gnome3) and I keep getting the above error.
I keep killing the offending process after finding it's pid using "ps aux | grep yum", but the same process spawns again with a different pid. root 1605 0.0 3.4 54424 26228 ? SN 10:51 0:02 /usr/bin/python /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py get-updates none
How can I properly kill this process, or use yum to install wireshark properly?
I bought a multifunction stylus sx218 Espon model and I can not run the scanner function. I did some research and found a few solutions and very functional. I hope someone solves the problem. My version of openSUSE 11.2.
I am doing some Linux kernel programming for my research project. I need to record the timestamp (by using cpuid and rdtsc) when an interrupt handler (top half) is first invoked. Due to the time critical nature of the problem itself, I have to do the timestamping inside the interrupt handler itself (the first operation when the handler is called). However, I understand that tasks that are not so time critical should be deferred to a tasklet function (bottom half) for processing because other interrupts are disabled in a (top-half) interrupt handler. I am currently out of idea on how I can pass the timestamp information that I have obtained in the interrupt handler to the corresponding tasklet function.
NOTE: compizconfig manager is not suitable for ubuntu 11.04 with unity, works fine with 9.10 and 10.10.
Ubuntu enables "Desktop Wall" by default. By holding Ctrl-Alt keys and pressing the left-arrow or right-arrow key each time, it slides through desktop workspaces horizontally for you to choose one to work on. Alternatively, you can change this to a "rotate cube" effect. Go To System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager.
Select "Desktop" from the left panel. Tick "Rotate Cube". Select "Enable Desktop Cube" as this plugin is required by "Rotate Cube". Select "Disable Desktop Wall".
Immediately you can rotate your desktop workspaces in this way holding down Ctrl-Alt keys, EITHER press the left-arrow or right-arrow key OR left-click the mouse and drag it to left or right.
if there is no compiz manager in your system, download it.. type :sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager ..
i got 2 live cds with 5 distros on each. i decided to test the distros on my macbook but I couldn't boot from the Live CD using reboot and holding down "c", so I selected the Live CD as my startup disk. so i experimented with fedora, tested mint, and played with pradus.
I'm using a Dell SC440 server for this effort. I started with Debian 6.0.7 32 bit i386 version in mid April and everything seemed to go smoothly until the first boot finished, I wanted to look at the hard drive just to see what storage space was left to work with. The drive was not recognized and I could not mount it. The error message was "One or More Block Devices are Holding /dev/dm-0".
I could not find anything on the debian forums that seemed to relate to the error message so Google led me to the same problem on Fedora, Ubuntu and one other distro. I flattened the machine and restarted from scratch. This time using Debian 6.0.7 AMD64 version. The install went well but I had the same problem with the same results. So I started over several more times before the new Debian 7.0 AMD64 version was released. Under Debian 7.0 I not only get the same error message but I also get a message that my video card is not supported under this new version of gnome and sudo does not work.
I'm currently using OpenSuse 11.1 web server. This is bad since 11.1 is no longer supported. the reason why I am using it is because Function set_magic_quotes_runtime() was no longer being used. (so I was told)
That being said, is there a way to get Function set_magic_quotes_runtime() to function on the newer versions of OpenSuSE?
the function terminates if no key is pressed for 10 consecutive seconds. I tried using the -t option as suggested in some forums, but my version of showkey doesn't have the option of changing the timeout. The options I get are:
-h --helpdisplay this help text -a --asciidisplay the decimal/octal/hex values of the keys -s --scancodesdisplay only the raw scan-codes -k --keycodesdisplay only the interpreted keycodes (default).
Is it possible to write a script to use this function and still keep the function active until an interrupt is recieved?
I've just got the multi-touch driver work with ubuntu 10.10 64bit on my alumni macbook. Now I can do scroll and right click with two fingers. However, one thing I really miss is the ability to move the cursor while holding the 'big button', I want to drag windows/icons with one finger holding down the physical button, and another finger dragging around.
I have Fedora 12 installed on an external harddrive (USB) and have it configured the way I want. Inside my laptop I'm working on I have a Win 7 installation. My plan is to slowly migrate to Fedora and only use Win 7 when needed, so far so good..
I shrinked the partition on the internal drive holding using Win 7's built in tools and would like to clone my USB installation to the new partition I can now create, I work a lot with Macs in my line of work and there I always use Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable backups, works like a charm..
As far as I know CCC uses rsync which is available for Linux as well so I guess I could use that? I plan on editting the Win7 bootloader later on to make it possible to boot from the new Fedora partition.
How would I go about it? The internal drive is GUID (or is it GPT?) formatted and loosing the Win 7 installation isn't an option of course.. All I could find were commandlines to backup certain folders or entire drives but I only want to backup my partition onto a different partition..
I have recently installrf MailScanner on my CentOS 5.5 and followed this instruction [URL] However, my postfix doesn't seems to be working after the installation. All the emails sent (using squirrel) mails are being held at /var/spool/postfix/hold
ok the new version of soundkonverter in maverick seems to me lame beyond belief so i want to hang on to the soundkonverter.3.8 version which was on lucid so i have installed it..MY QUESTION IS is there a way to never have update manager trying to update it unclicking it every time i want to do my weekly update with update manager could be a massive pain in the rear.
I've just noticed this morning that the number shortcuts that normally appear when holding the super key to show the Unity launcher are not there. The s, a and f shortcuts remain however. Also, just pushing the numbers that should be there doesn't do anything.
I've just upgraded from Maverick to Natty and things were mostly working fine until this. I'm not sure what changes have happened between now and then and I don't remember any major changes in that period.
I just tried to take a screenshot and opened GIMP to save it and I checked again and they have reappeared. So, I guess the new question is why did this happen? How can I solve this problem if it happens in the future? Should I mark this as solved? I don't really understand what happened either way.
I have an issue running the openSUSE 11.2 liveCD KDE on a Dell Vostro 3500. It boots fine to command line. It seems to boot fine to KDE (I assume it doesn't hang cause the power button turns the laptop off without holding it). However the only thing I can see is a black screen. I've checked the CD with the tool included to the CD. The hardware of the laptop seems to be fine as well
I have successfully installed squid proxy server for my college . Then i used proxy authentication for 10 users using htpasswd command in a simple text file with encrypted password. It works fine.
My request is that I have to manage 2000 usernames of students for authentication . How can i do this ?
Is that single text file capable of holding 2000 usernames and password for authentication ?
I have some issue with my amanda backup server, which is connecting with Scalar Quantum i500 via FC. I got the error as below 3 days ago. These dumps were to tape 000289. *** A TAPE ERROR OCCURRED: [No more writable valid tape found].
Normally I will load the proper tapes and run the amflush to push stuff from the holding disk to tapes manually. However this time amflush in this case did not help, Amanda immediately responded with an out of tape error again.
Meanwhile I got some errors from dmesg as well st3: Error 18 (sugg. bt 0x0, driver bt 0x0, host bt 0x0). scsi1 (0,3,0) : reservation conflict
I looked on the net for such function or example and didin't find anything, thus after having made one i guess it would be legitimate to drop it to see what others thinks of it.
