Server :: Unable Of Holding 2000 Usernames And Password For Authentication?

Jul 17, 2010

I have successfully installed squid proxy server for my college . Then i used proxy authentication for 10 users using htpasswd command in a simple text file with encrypted password. It works fine.

My request is that I have to manage 2000 usernames of students for authentication . How can i do this ?

Is that single text file capable of holding 2000 usernames and password for authentication ?

Server :: Amanda Unable To Copy Backup File From Holding Disk To Tapes

May 14, 2010

I have some issue with my amanda backup server, which is connecting with Scalar Quantum i500 via FC. I got the error as below 3 days ago.
These dumps were to tape 000289.
*** A TAPE ERROR OCCURRED: [No more writable valid tape found].

Normally I will load the proper tapes and run the amflush to push stuff from the holding disk to tapes manually. However this time amflush in this case did not help, Amanda immediately responded with an out of tape error again.

Meanwhile I got some errors from dmesg as well
st3: Error 18 (sugg. bt 0x0, driver bt 0x0, host bt 0x0).

Server :: RHEL, And LDAP Authentication, Username Yes, Password No?

Jan 10, 2011

I started a new job and they use LDAP here. I built a new RHEL 5.5 server and configured LDAP. Usernames are recognized but the password is not. I can chown a file to a user name but when I try to login as the user it won't accept the password.I know the password is correct because I can login to any of the old boxes and it accepts the password. I ran authconfig-tui to tell my RHEL box to authenticate to ldap.

I need to setup a way for our Web Developer to login to this particular server to manage the webpages that are hosted. We have a firebox firewall and we opened port 21. Do we need to open any other ports or just port 21?

Server :: Uppercase Usernames In / Etc / Sudoers Triggers Warnings

Jan 6, 2010

We're syncing users from Active Directory over to our linux LDAP server (Red Hat Directory Server). The user names on the AD side are all written in uppcase letters, which is the company policy.The uppername usernames causes problems when setting up /etc/sudoers, since uppercase words are interpreted as aliases. For example, if I add user KENNETH to a User_Alias (i.e. something like "User_Alias ADMINS = KENNETH"), I will get a warning from visudo which expects KENNETH to be an alias and thus not a username. Despite the warning, sudo does seem to work correctly. But is there a way to tell visudo or sudo that usernames are uppercase, and should not trigger a warning? Or are there other ways to go about this sort of thing?

Server :: OpenLDAP Authentication - Unable To Login?

Dec 22, 2010

I have configured a ldap server and trying to login to same ldap server using a ldap user. However, I am not able to login and getting the following in /var/log/secure:

Dec 22 20:06:29 redhat5 sshd[7241]: Invalid user ldapu1 from 192.168.85.1
Dec 22 20:06:31 redhat5 sshd[7242]: input_userauth_request: invalid user ldapu1
Dec 22 20:06:37 redhat5 sshd[7241]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): check pass; user unknown
Dec 22 20:06:37 redhat5 sshd[7241]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=192.168.85.1
Dec 22 20:06:37 redhat5 sshd[7241]: pam_succeed_if(sshd:auth): error retrieving information about user ldapu1
Dec 22 20:06:39 redhat5 sshd[7241]: Failed password for invalid user ldapu1 from 192.168.85.1 port 4461 ssh2

I can see that if I use the ldapsearch with same filter, I am not able to locate the user "ldapu1". However, if I change the filter to (|(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=ldapu1))", it shows me the ldap user:
[root@redhat5 ~]# ldapsearch -x -b "ou=Users,dc=homeldap,dc=com" -D "cn=Manager,dc=homeldap,dc=com" -W -H "ldap://127.0.0.1/" "(|(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=ldapu1))"
Enter LDAP Password:
# extended LDIF
# LDAPv3
# base <ou=Users,dc=homeldap,dc=com> with scope subtree
# filter: (|(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=ldapu1))
# requesting: ALL

# ldapu1, Users, homeldap.com
dn: cn=ldapu1,ou=Users,dc=homeldap,dc=com
objectClass: inetOrgPerson
cn: ldapu1
sn: ldapu1
uid: ldapu1
userPassword:: bGRhcHV1MQ==

# search result
search: 2
result: 0 Success
# numResponses: 2
# numEntries: 1

Where I have made a mistake?
- Is it necessary to create an account on Linux box and then migrate it to ldap?
- I was just wondering if I can somehow change the default filter from AND to OR at the time of login. I used "pam_filter |objectClass=inetOrgPerson" in ldap.conf.
However, it didn't change the filter.

Server :: Firefox - Unable To Access VsFTPd Directory. Connection Times Out After Authentication

Apr 13, 2011

Seismicmike here. My first post. I'll try to be as clear and concise as possible. For the sake of this post, I'm going to use 1.2.3.4 as a place holder for my public IP. On my web server, I would like to be able to access the /var/ftp directory through a web browser. I have successfully done so with Google Chrome, but I cannot access the directory in Firefox or IE. Both FF and IE ask me for authentication but then time out attempting to load the directory.

I suspect that there may be something up with switching to passive mode and/or that this issue may be more with my configuration of Firefox and not with the server (seeing as how Chrome works). Another possibility may be related to SSL. When I connect with FileZilla, I have to use the FTP over Explicit SSL/TLS option in order to connect. In any case I still would like to fix it. I would also like to avoid having to install FireFTP if at all possible.

Steps to reproduce (not that you can without my actual IP =J):

* Open Chrome
* Go to ftp://1.2.3.4
* Enter username
* Enter password

Ubuntu :: Ssh Authentication: Key & Password Mix?

Jul 25, 2011

I am running a small ubuntu-server headless machine at home. It is configured with sshd so that I can connect from anywhere (if I have Internet access.)However, there is a thing: I'd like to have good security and disable password authentication, but I also want to be able to connect from a PC that I've never touched before. And no, I'm not prepared to type a 256 bytes password every time I type "sudo ..."

Here is what I thought: I could have a login (pieroxy) that has a moderately strong password and another user (pieroxy-ext) that has a very strong password (100+ chars.) I would use my regular account (pieroxy) whenever I have a key-based authentication and the other one (pieroxy-ext) whenever I have a password-based authentication to do. Then, I'll just su to "pieroxy" and I'm done typing the 100 chars pwd. In order to do that, I would need to be able to configure my machine so that password-based authentication is disabled for all accounts but enabled for my account that has a strong password (pieroxy-ext). Is it possible to disable password-based authentication on a user basis?
