Was wondering if someone could suggest a reference and possible approach to troubleshooting openSUSE update. I'd always assumed that the openSUSE update (applet) would notify me and update any apps installed from any of the configured repositories. This week I found two applications were not detected and updated, one from the Pacman repository where an update was available for more than 2 weeks and another from the Contrib repository where an update was available for an unknown amount of time.I manually detected and updated both using zypper without any special repository configuration. The SUSE updater has been running regularly installing critical and recommended patches regularly without issue.Am considering
- Maybe somewhere there is a config specifying repositories and/or apps? I can't seem to find something that's applicable.
- Maybe I misunderstood that the SUSE updater isn't supposed to update anything from non-OSS repositories?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. The Update Manager originally showed the update to Ubuntu 10.04 and I pressed the update button. Midway through the update, my internet died so I just cancelled the update. My internet is working again and I'm trying to update but the update manager won't show the update button. I've pressed check a bunch of times and installed all the other updates but I can't see the distribution update.

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

I am having problems with my newly upgraded 9.10 distribution that keeps locking up. I had started a thread on that but along the way, I noticed another problem with the Update manager. I posted the following text in the same thread but realized that I must start a newer thread since it has its own issues (so sorry if you see this text in my other thread).I had upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 with ISO image and then to 9.10 with ISO image. In between, I did not reset anything in the Update manager (the upgrades were within one day of each other). Since the computer was connected to network during upgrades, I also let it fetch any newer packages as it needed them.
After the upgrade, I started having system lock ups and it requires hard boot. I tried to check for any updates using Update Manager. It reported that system was up-to-date. However, I noticed in the Settings that cdrom was selected in Sources (perhaps because I had upgraded with ISO image). I unselected the cdrom and tried to update the packages. Since I upgraded using ISO image, there is some problem here about recognizing the repository perhaps. Do you think my problem may have stemmed from upgrading twice using ISO images and not resetting the Update Manager in some fashion in between? Although the system did fetch upgraded packages during upgrades. How can I reset the update manager to start updating properly? Perhaps Authentication is an issue?Of course, I am still having trouble with lock up.

I've tried deleting the cached files, changing my server, checking that my date & time are correct (signing can be time sensitive), updating gpg (it was already at the latest), and maybe some other things I've forgotten.

I have the package "xvidcap" (Screen recorder) installed in Ubuntu, the problem I have is the version I have installed is an older version and there is a newer version avaliable, but I don't want to install the newer version as this breaks some functionality regarding screen capturing e.g. audio capturing. But each time I run Update Manager the package appears in the list to be upgraded.
Is there anyway to flag the package as do not upgrade or something to make it not appear in Update Manager or at least have it greyed out so the checkbox isn't automatically checked each time update manager is ran?

I have a Win vista dual booted with ubuntu, no problem there, all's well. I used live-usb to make a bootable USB with centos 5.0 I created the usb and it will boot just fine. The problem I run into is updating the installation with the package manager. I run the manager and the system prompts for reboot and I get this error:

I recently got an iPhone 3g and have been trying to upload music onto my device with Rhythmbox because my computer exclusively runs Ubuntu (10.04 LTS, Lucid Lynx). Rhythmbox would show files that were dragged and dropped as being on the iPhone, and they appeared in the iPhone's folders, but they weren't recognized in the iPod player. I followed a variety of forum threads to try to fix the problem, but ended up creating a whole new set of problems with my package manager.
I get this error message before package manager opens: E: Type 'n' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pmcenery-ppa-lucid.list E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
And this message after I close the first error message window and the package manager opens: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'n' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pmcenery-ppa-lucid.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.' Does anyone have any recommendations on how to fix this? If it isn't already apparent, I am very inexperienced working with ubuntu, so the more detailed the response, the better.

Ok so I having the same issue as everyone else but it still exists despite the solutions other people are experiencing. Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

I have been having some major issues with the update manager of ubuntu 9.10. I have had 3 instances so far where the updater froze either in the middle of updating or right after, and every time resulted in a corrupted file system. Two times it has happened to me which resulted in once having to completely reinstall and another was luckily saved by using Gparted on the live CD. But now my friend who i installed Ubuntu for has had the same problem. When it happened to me, I was forced to hold the power button to get the computer to turn off as it completely locked up the system. My friend however, was able to use the shutdown menu.
