I have a performance issue using the open source radeon driver. I normally would just attribute this to the driver still not ready, but it was working fine on the Mandriva install I just wiped out. I replaced madriva in order to have Qimo sessions for my daughter to use. When I try to run glxgears the gears basically don't move.

My 4770 had basic 3d support out of the box with the open source radeon driver. My 5770 doesn't seem to (basic rendering only with no compositing), although this page suggests it does:

Is there anyone out there who is running a 5770 or knows how I can upgrade to a newer version of the open source driver? I'd rather not use catalyst (Id don't game with ubuntu) and I found the open source driver to be quite nice.
I have ATI Radeon HD 5650 (code name Redwood) on Ubuntu 11.04. And I have been experimenting with open-source and proprietary driver.
The problem with proprietary driver is bad 2D rendering when watching movies in VLC (and any other), because if vsync is off, video is tearing and when its on, the video seems to stutter (the background moves in steps, not smooth). I have tried open-source radeon driver and its far better, but that driver doesn't have 3D acceleration for playing games. I was trying to play Hive Rise, and with proprietary driver works great, but with open-source the game starts, but i don't see the interface (start game, options, etc.).
It seems that Mesa 7.10 (in Natty) doesn't have 3D support for this card, but Mesa 7.11 (in Oneiric) will have that. Is that correct? I just want to have good 2D performance with ability to play games.
Similar to the other threads, but a completely different card/manufacturer. The others were mostly Nvidia. I have a dial boot machine, HP PAvillion with Windows 7 and now openSUSE, 11.4.
One (of my many problems right now!) is the screen / monitor constantly blinks/flashes/blanks. About every 15-20 seconds, it will go black for about 1-2 seconds and then come right back.
I was using KDE the first go around, and have since re-installed and am now running Gnome. I switched to Mint in between and did not have this problem. Also, I do not appear to have this happen at the logon screen. I have also tried ubuntu and didn't have the problem. I have checked the screen saver settings, and power save options and have them set to off and a couple of hours respectively. I have also modified the xorg.conf.d file to hard code the monitor settings. (Dell 23"). The card is Dual DVI out, and I have it converting to VGA to the monitor.

I must say that the radeon driver has come a long way and works wonderfully under Lucid for my needs. I'm just a bit worried about the lack of PM support and how high my temps might be. I would prefer some way to keep an eye on things

I am doing all this because I have read on the internet that the open source radeon driver does not enable H/w acceleration properly which means that choppy performance while playing HD movies and / or while playing OpenGL games. Not that OpenGL games don't work, they just work very slowly even with Direct Rendering of Mesa drivers. Then there's this thing about Kernel Mode Setting as well which isn't available in the proprietary ATI driver.
A friend of mine is looking for a cheap PCI graphics card to do TV-out from his PCI only PC for MythTV duties. We've found cheap old PCI Radeon 9200's with TV Out on eBay. These appear to only be supported by the open source drivers now, but will the TV out work with the open source drivers?

Until recently I had been using the fglrx drivers without difficulty, but a recent upgrade removed fglrx - apparently this is because ATI has yet to release drivers for Xorg 1.7. So I've switched to the open source driver (radeon), but am not getting any 3D acceleration - hence can't run desktop effects in either kwin or compiz. When I run "glxinfo | grep OpenGL" I get the following:

It's the software rasterizer that is the problem, I gather. After Googling for similar problems encountered by others, I've installed firmware-linux and firmware-linux-nonfree, but to no effect. All fglrx-* packages are purged. Does anyone have any other thoughts? (I don't currently have an xorg.conf file in use.)
Last year I had a gui tool for configuring the radeon open source drivers in my old slackware install but now I forgot the name of it. I'm pretty sure it was gtk based and no matter what I type in google I can't seem to find any reference to it. There is a radeontool but that's not it. Anyone know what the name for it was, or something else that provides easy configuring of the open source radeon drivers? I remember it had lots of options to configure including some I've never heard of. Thought it'd be easy to find now since it seemed so officially supported during the time I used it!

I've set up this new PC, the graphic card I picked is the ATI R7 260X, pretty good card with lots of core processors, high clock and 2GB memory. I'm now currently using the 14.4 catalyst drive, it works actually alright, though, there are some mishaps with this driver:
First my hdmi screen had scale down, leaving black borders around, even though the catalyst control said the correct native resolution, this turned out to be a underscan that fglrx does and I've finally managed to fix it. Other caveat is that the screen simply won't suspend or turn off( via software), DPMS actually works, forcing it turns the screen blank for some seconds but something does not allow the screen to sleep.
Performance wise it seems pretty good though, everything is pretty smooth, being able to play games maxed out on resolution and ultra settings, though, I still haven't tested out that many games.
The open-source radeon on the other hand, well its open-source, fully xorg and linux compatible, which is a major plus point. It seem it has come a long way, supporting lot of features and providing better performance in some cases.
Before installing Catalyst I had issues with mesa and steam, steam would complain about not finding the 32bit libraries, this is however a steam runtime issue, maybe it could already be fixed.

I made the error of installing FGLRX on lucid. After the install, Plymouth resolution sucks and my laptop will not come out of suspend/hibernate. When I use jockey-gtk to disable FGLRX, it will not allow me to use compiz for 3d graphics. However, out of the box, I was able to run compiz no problem.How can I revert lucid back to factory form, where it was able to perform 3d acceleration without the use of FGLRX?
View 3 Replies View RelatedFirst of all I must say that I am new to Debian, but not newbie on Linux. I am the Arch Linux user too, and I managed to solve identical problem on Arch. So, as I want to try Debian I am facing the same problem again. Problem is that my GPU is overheating. I am using Ati open source driver. I installed it following the procedure on Debian wiki. On Arch I solved it with proprietary driver fglrx. I tried the same solution here but it doesn't work. So I am stuck with open source drivers.
The difference between Arch and Debian (fglrx vs. Ati open source) is 10 C degrees. Debian Ati open source is much hotter. And ofc I am facing the low battery life too, because of this. My laptop is using much higher energy consumption with open source driver (almost double). How can I check my energy consumption on Debian? I read about some xorg options. I tried it, but no effect. As I am on Debian testing I am using kernel 2.6.32. Does this kernel supports xorg video energy consumption options?
Just wondering if this is possible? Total n00b with linux, this is my *thinking* 3rd week using Ubuntu 9.10. And I am using my system for surfing the web, listen to music, video`s and chatting. And I got the "funny" tough`t of trying to maybe play World of Warcraft again on this computer. Yes I have run it before when I had XP and W7 on it. The w7 experience on this computer was a bad mistake. So yeah, the thing I am really wondering on is this: Wine, WoW with WoTLK ( Wrath of the Lich King ), with the newest Open Source ATI graphic driver?[URL].. View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering if anybody could explain this phenomenon to me. I have just had a box stop on me, probably power supply failure. It was running with an AMD 2GHz cpu, 32 bit, 2GB memory. The Radeon card was using the x-org "radeon" driver and giving upper 3000 to lower 4000 fps according to glxgears.
I have transfered both the radeon card and the hard disc from the dead box and loaded them onto a different one. The new one is running with an intel pentium 4 running at 1.7GHz, 32 bit, 1GB of memory. On this box glxgears reports only upper 600 to lower 700 fps.
OK. It's a slightly less powerful cpu but by only 300 MHz. "top" shows glxgears using 72% of the cpu and the cpu shows that it's loaded at 60%. There is still free real memory and the usage figures for it do not change during the running of glxgears. I am really puzzled as to why there is a fivefold plus drop off in performance.
I mean, the software etc is the same as on the old box - it's using the same disc after all. I can only think that there is something else that is getting in the way but what?
I have an ATI Radeon x1300 graphic card on an Intel platform.Since the last reinstall my Debian Squeeze system shows very poor performance in glxgears,only 80-90 FPS. Last time I had a problem the kms setting in the kernel. I disabled the modding setting in GRUB and then glxgears showed about 900-1300 FPS. Now,the problem is back, even though I made the same setting in the boot loader.
View 14 Replies View Relatedi had recently loaded squeeze and had an issue with the 2d performance.i.e when being prompted for the root password, the shading slowly draws down the screen several times before stopping at the final darker shade. i then added the linux-firmware-nonfree package. all worked extremely well, even compiz, but i don't really care about compiz. i just loaded it to see how it performed. i then distro-hopped a bit and when i came back to squeeze the first thing i did was add the package, but the video is acting like i haven't added the package. i've searched for an answer, but have not found anything recent to indicate if xorg was upgraded or what.stable lenny works fine, but i'd rather have the nice console fonts when not in x and more up to date apps like gimp and xsane in squeeze.

Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

I installed Lucid when I had my Nvidia board in the computer. Yesterday I pulled out the nvidia board and installed my new Radeon 5750. Hearing that the Open Source driver is the way to go, I first decided to try that. I edited xorg.conf replacing "nvidia" with "radeon", since this is the module name (right?) but it still doesn't seem to load. Does anyone have an example of what a properly configured xorg.conf is supposed to look like using the ATI Open Source driver? I get X up and running in "low graphics mode", but can never get beyond that.
Trying to turn on window effects causes a "searching for drivers" dialogue to appear and then disappear without success. A quick "glxinfo |grep -i render" indicates that it is indeed in the software mode. I even tried to manually modprobe the radeon module and restart GDM, but still nothing. At first I thought this was a limitation of the Open Source drivers on 5xxx series boards, but this page suggests that it should work in "gold" status. I have since installed FGLX and it is just terribly buggy, so I am hoping to use the Open Source driver.
I've always had and used Ubuntu. When I installed and did not like the stability of a certain version, I just reformatted the partition and used LiveCD. OK, on a virgin SATA, 300-gig partition, I installed 10.04 and that took the ATI Radeon 3rd-party graphics driver. No problem. Then, the family wanted 2 languages on the machine. The German keyboard screwed me in terminal and I wiped out Home and all their data. I used Scalpel to image-carve 300-gig onto a 400-gig partition and tried to re-install Ubuntu 10.10.
The ATI's fglrx will not install, that's the error. That same file prevents upgrades of Ubuntu to current status.

The last few weeks I have been dual monitoring from my lcd monitor to my hdtv. LCD was connected via vga and my tv via hdmi. To my knowledge, my pc has two graphic cards, both ATI Radeons. One I believe is on the mother board, ATI Radeon 4200HD series, and the other is in a PCI slot ATI Radeon 5600HD series. I think that when I had it dual monitored the tv was connected via 4200HD and LCD via 5600HD (could be wrong).
What I Did: Everything was working fine (i was mainly just using the HDTV as my only monitor and main monitor). As you can guess I was gaming on the hdtv, but I was not satisfied with the slight lag I felt. So I looked at forums to see what I could do and they mostly said 1) change settings on tv to game mode, 2) turn off vsync on your graphics card. So I did #1, but when I tried to do #2 I could not open my graphics cards "menu" aka CCC aka Catalyst Command Center.
So I read up on why this might happen and they said I should uninstall drivers and reinstall the drivers, so I did this as well (with most current drivers from the AMD site, version 10.9) and still I could not get into the CCC. As I was reading more forums, they were saying the 10.8 version mainly has this problem. So what I did was I downloaded 10.7 (did not install yet) and uninstalled the new 10.9. When I went to reboot the cpu after the uninstall of 10.9 there was no display on my HDTV.
I figured I just need to go back to my LCD which was still hooked up to my cpu. No display there as well. I tried dvi and vga hook ups from the monitor to both graphic cards but nothing worked to get me a display. I also tried my girlfriends monitor, which only has vga, to both graphics card and still nothing worked. So at this point I have NO display. After about an hour of trying different combinations of cords, monitors, plugs, tv's etc.,
I RANDOMLY somehow got a display with my girlfriends monitor vga to the 5600 card (I think). I had to hold the vga cord a certain way on attached to the monitor in order for the display to work. So since I had a display, I quickly installed 10.7. After installation, it did not prompt me to reboot (which I thought was weird) so I just went to properties and tried to change the resolution to the max 1600x something, to see how it looks. The screen went blank and the display never reappeared. Now I basically have NO DISPLAY again.
is it possible for me to get this driver for Ubuntu v 10.10? This is the only thing stopping me coming over fully from Win7 right now...
