Ubuntu :: Sony Vaio Y Blank Screen And No Activity?
Aug 8, 2010When I try to install Ubuntu or (having installed using Wubi) boot Ubuntu, I get a blank screen and no activity. This problem has been addressed many times but I haven't been able to get any of the proposed solutions (e.g. nomodeset, i8042.nopnp) to work. Is there another Linux or Unix-like OS that is known to work with this hardware?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade To 12 From 11 - Screen Goes Blank With Alot Of Disk Activity
Dec 15, 2009I attempted to do the upgrade from 11 to 12 with the Preupgrade Assistant. Unfortunatly something went terribly wrong. Everything went well, excluding the size of partition error, untill the reboot. I did have to remove two previous installs. Now grub gives me an option to upgrade to Fedora 12. When I select this the screen runs code quickly and the screen goes blank with alot of disk activity. Then nothing. Is there a method of recovering this install? I am fairly new to Linux Administration and I am just knowledgable enough to mess things up.

Apr 27, 2010I've upgraded from Karmic 64-bit kubuntu to the RC build for Lucid. I have two pcs connected to two monitors via an Aten dual head KVM switch. With the new release I only get a background slideshow on one monitor. I can get an image on the first monitor by right clicking and choosing Next Wallpaper image, but it never changes. When I select Desktop Activity Settings both monitors go entirely blank, except for the mouse cursor. The Display Multiple Monitors screen has ticks in all the multiple monitor checkboxes and Identify All Displays correctly identifies both monitors.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Disable Screensaver When Viewing Full Screen?
Feb 28, 2010I found a few threads dealing with this subject about a year ago but none seem to have come up with a simple answer. I use vlc and one writer indicated there was an option in vlc to disable the screensaver when in full screen mode. However, I've checked all over vlc and can't find this option.I'm not interested in creating a switch using Terminal to do this manually. I just want to know if disabling the screensaver can be automatic when in full screen mode - like in Windows

There is an option to have SMplayer to do so within the settings menubut that does nothing, screensaver is still being activated after 5 min. Anyone managed to have the player do this? OpenSUSE :: Can't Cancel Screensaver Initiation Until After Screen Dims
Aug 28, 2010I'm running openSUSE 11.3 with an Intel GM965 on-board video card. After upgrading xorg-x11-server to 7.5_1.9.0-62.2.x86_64 from Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.3/x86_64 after a suggestion to fix a different problem, I noticed that the screensaver seems to work fine as mentioned above. However, I've noticed now that when the screen starts to dim before applying the actual screensaver I apparently can't cancel the screensaver initiation until after the screen finishes dimming (that is, goes completely black) and the screensaver actually starts. No amount of mouse gestures, clicks or key strokes will cancel the screensaver once the screen starts to dim until the screensaver itself starts running.

May 9, 2010I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. May 13, 2011This issue was resolved in Lucid and Maverick; now it's back... This happens after only 2-3 minutes, even when the screen saver is set to activate after 20 minutes. I believe this has something to do with ACPI power management.
