Ubuntu :: X64 Screensaver Freezes After A While?
Jun 17, 2011
I have Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit. Kernel: 2.6.38-8-generic AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 250u Processor 750GB HD 8GB RAM. Now, the problem is that when I lock my computer(I have to do this because I have brothers and stuff always trying to sneak on), it freezes after a while. Like, I lock my computer before I go to sleep, and I wake up and it's frozen, and I have to reboot to fix it. The problem is that I host 2 servers on it, and I can't turn it off.

I'm using: ubuntu 10.04 64 bit proprietary fglrx drivers for ati 4890.
When shaking the mouse to bring up the computer, the screensaver will freeze and not display the dialog box to log back into my profile. However, even though I can't see it, if I blindly and correctly type in my password it will work.
[update] I posted this question while at work where I do not use Ubuntu...sadly. Anyway, when I got home, I locked the screen, the gl fish screensaver came up. bam, no login dialog box. ok, tried the gl matrix screensaver, bam, no dialog box. Finally, I tried a non-gl screensaver, and what do you know, there's my login dialog box. Something is up with the gl screensavers.
Just to reiterate, when I activate the mouse or keyboard during a gl screensaver I do not see the login dialog box.

I am on Ubuntu 10.04, and I think I have had this problem since I installed it.
When I type my password into gnome-screensaver and click "Unlock," all the buttons become disabled and the cursor turns into the "busy" look. I have to go into one of the virtual terminals and do "killall gnome-screensaver." This happens maybe 75% of the time when the screen locks.
Also, this last week or two there is a new problem where the gnome-screensaver covers only part of the screen and I can still see and use most of the desktop.

when I leave the computer and xscreensaver - which I have a link to in my .kde/Autostart directory - starts up, all hell breaks loose. I don't know if my desktop compositing is doing this (I have an ATI Radeon x1200 card with stable Mesa GL, seems to run compiz just fine) or if one of the individual screensavers is b0rked but it always seems to end with me coming back to a still-life shot of my computer screen with a BRIGHT BLUE translucent stripe across the top. Alt-SysRq-K doesn't do anything from that point on, Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't do anything and I have to hit the power button. I don't have multiple screensaver programs running at once, I've already disabled the native KDE saver. I never had this problem with GNOME, but couldn't enable compositing on it either.
FYI for anyone that feels the need to ask, I use the "radeon" driver and my glxinfo is thus:
Quote:
bash-4.1$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
code....

There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..

We are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?

I have recently upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04, and I have the following problem. My computer is set up to start the screensaver and lock the screen after 5 minutes of inactivity and to use a blank screen after 15. Whenever I come back after some moments of inactivity and move the mouse, the screensaver doesn't go away. Instead of having a box whereinput a password, I'm left with a still image of one frame of the screensaver. I can still input the password and press enter to unlock the screen, but it is a bit annoying nevertheless. Moreover this does not happen if the screen is blank: in that case I see the expected box.

How do I set the screensaver in kubuntu 10.10? I've searched the web for help, and everywhere says it's under "desktop" in start | settings, but I can't see an entry for "desktop", only for "desktop settings" which seems to be something completely different (though fun). Pretty much a Linux newbie

I have an Xubuntu 10.10 File server / Media centre which I have set up to automatically lock the screen at 1am so the teenagers dont stay up all night watching movie and then being tired for school. My problem is I dont know how to automatically unlock it or how to unlock it through SSH.Usually I just manually unlock it every morning as I walk out the door but sometimes I forget and then can't unlock it from home.Kids come home from school while I'm at work and then cant watch movies or shows. How do I get it to automatically unlock the screensaver / screen lock? How do I unlock it through SSH without using VNC?BTW I cant get VNC working anymore since I upgraded to 10.10 with a fresh install either.

I'm trying to get the f-spot screensaver working under KDE. I found the f-spot-screensaver executable in usr/lib/gnome-screensaver/gnome-screensaver/f-spot-screensaver, and the executable works just fine under KDE when run from the command line. I also found a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/screensavers/f-spot-screensaver.desktop.
I also installed xscreensavers, and they all seem to work just fine, but I can't figure out how to make the f-spot version show up in control panel.

I wanted to get a screensaver as my background so I installed xscreensaver didn't work out to the way I wanted to so I removed it apt-get remove xscreensaver then it asked for some other packages to be removed so I did apt-get autoremove xscreensaver was still there working instead of gnome-screensaver so I did a command search to find folders of xscreensaver and remove them whereis xscreensaver and it did remove them, but gnome-screensaver still doesn't start up.
I've tried this command gnome-Message: screensaver-command --activate but I get this error: Message: Screensaver is not running!
I've tried googling for a way to start gnome-screensaver in terminal but no joy, anyone know how to get this to start.

Just as the title says, the electricsheep screensaver (v2.7) is not working - not on gnome-screensaver at least. When running electricsheep from a terminal it does work, also the exact same version works fine as a screensaver under Lubuntu.I've tried some solutions provided in other threads on this forum, such as installing the PPA version and letting it run overnight, without success.

The Gnome Screensaver preferences window is freezing my desktop. I went into synaptic and tried to remove it (to use xscreensaver instead). But synaptic, in removing gnome-screensaver package, wanted to ADD a bunch of packages, lots of KDE stuff (which I don't want). Is there any way around this? If not, is there a way to reset the gnome-screensaver config file (whatever it is) so that it doesn't freeze on startup? This problem arose after I selected a particular screensaver in the gui window.

I do not have gnome/gdm installed. I do have fluxbox though. From the command line I start a firefox session, and if I do not use the kybd or mouse after about 10 min. screensaver kicks in.
How to turn off screen saver? I did not have this problem with previous releases , not until I upgraded to the latest 2.6.35-28-generic #49-Ubuntu I believe. The latest OS release installs FF 4.0, I had thought that was the problem. I have removed FF 4.0 and installed 3.6.13 instead and still have the same problem.

I always tried to neglect it, but it is really annoying! Whenever my PC goes toscreensaver, after unlocking screen (I set it to unlocked without asking password) compiz crashes and I must run it again using Alt+F2 and typing "compiz".My system is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I already have 10.10 on my laptop, this is my desktop and I don't want to install 10.10 on it. I prefer the LTS for use on my desktop.I tried several screen saversAnd ..., and I need compiz, I can not live without that!

In order to develop an application on Ubuntu, i'm trying to configure the screensaverI get the logo of the application, and I would like to launch the screensaver with the logo (moving or not, it's not important). On windows we can execute a specific file and it run, but i don't find the same command on linux. Some tutorials speak about specific folder on /usr/share/background, and do some settings on gconf-editor.. Does it exist a more easier method ?

A bit back the "Pictures" folder used by the screen saver disappeared. I created a new one, and since I had the files backed up, I put my series of pictures in.But since then in screen saver mode a tremendous variety of pictures are showing up. Some from web pages I have looked at, some from another folder where I store personal fotos, some from pdf files I have looked at, and some I have no idea where they came from... and of course some from my Pictures folder.
This is not a "serious" problem, but I am left very curious as to what happened, or how to correct the situation.... if there is a correction.

I am looking for an applet or a launcher or a script to turn the gnome screensaver off and on with a click. The feature I would like, though, would be that the icon changes depending on whether the screensaver is on or off. I was going to try and build it, but I couldn't figure out how to change the icon picture for a toolbar launcher with a *sh script and I don't really have enough experience programming in gnome with any language.
