Ubuntu :: Unlock Screensaver Through SSH
Jul 14, 2011
I have an Xubuntu 10.10 File server / Media centre which I have set up to automatically lock the screen at 1am so the teenagers dont stay up all night watching movie and then being tired for school. My problem is I dont know how to automatically unlock it or how to unlock it through SSH.Usually I just manually unlock it every morning as I walk out the door but sometimes I forget and then can't unlock it from home.Kids come home from school while I'm at work and then cant watch movies or shows. How do I get it to automatically unlock the screensaver / screen lock? How do I unlock it through SSH without using VNC?BTW I cant get VNC working anymore since I upgraded to 10.10 with a fresh install either.

I am on Ubuntu 10.04, and I think I have had this problem since I installed it.
When I type my password into gnome-screensaver and click "Unlock," all the buttons become disabled and the cursor turns into the "busy" look. I have to go into one of the virtual terminals and do "killall gnome-screensaver." This happens maybe 75% of the time when the screen locks.
Also, this last week or two there is a new problem where the gnome-screensaver covers only part of the screen and I can still see and use most of the desktop.

Back when I used openSUSE 10.3 with KDE 3.5.x I used the KDE-specific version of blueproximity found here: K-Blueproximity KDE-Apps.org. The thing that made it great was that it integrated kscreensaver.
It hasn't been updated in a couple years and isn't compatible with 4.3.x so I'm using the non-KDE-ified standard blueproximity package. For the most part it works. Based on comments I found somewhere I'm running the following command to lock the screen:
Code:
qdbus org.kde.screensaver /ScreenSaver Lock ; xset dpms force off
and to unlock:
Code:
xset dpms force on ; killall -9 krunner_lock kblankscrn.kss
.
The problem is that the unlock command doesn't work. My monitors will reactivate and the screensaver will display but in order to actually unlock I have to hit a key/move the mouse and enter my password.
what the command should be to actually unlock the screen since the above doesn't work.

There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..

When I lock the computer, and move the mouse to unlock, the unlock screen is invisible and can't be seen. I can still type in my password and manage to unlock, but I can't visually see the screen, nor can anyone leave me a message while I'm gone. This only seems to affect GL screensavers.

Is there any way to "unlock" file info in Koala to become visible in the properties of that file? For example, when opening an .mp3 in VLC and checking the information, I am able to see and edit extra info that I do not see when simply right clicking the file and selecting properties. Another example is that GIMP saves comments to images, but I have nowhere to view these comments once they are saved. I would like to see more info when checking the properties of a file, dare I say like Windows enables users to. So is there a terminal code or plugin that I can install?

I think this counts as a security question. I didn't know where else to place this. It's really preventing me from doing some things, such as setting up the Empathy IM program for chatting and whatnot, and this default keyring really haulting any progress I can make on that front. It also pops up when I'm just booting up the laptop. My brother set the password and then forgot, so he tried all of these passwords and it would never work. It always pops back up several moments later and reiterates its question. It goes away when I click on 'Deny', but now I can't follow that same route when trying to set Empathy IM Client up. I would like to either do away with this password requirement, or just change it to something I can easily remember

I am working to connect several Ubuntu computers to a Hughs satelite radio via a Trednet switch. The ISP requires static IP addresses on our machines. Obviously, to do that I need to access the Network Manager.
When I click on the Unlock button the machines wait for a minute or so and return a "could not authenticate" message. It never prompts for a password.
When I loaded the OS on these computers in the states, there were no issues with the install or updates and configuration. Now that they have been shipped to Africa there is something which has happened to all the computers and they will not unlock.
If i reload the OS they do fine..

Im unable to login to my computer because directly on startup the "unlock login keyring" pops up, i can move my mouse around but cant click anything or type/use commands.
The loading also takes longer then usual. This is in lucid 64bit. I installed gnome-do the night before so i think it has something to do with that, but i really dont know what to do. I tried going into terminal (alt-f2), or killing the process with ctrl-alt-esc but they keyboard is useless (though not entirely frozen as i can turn on/off numlock etc)
Is there someway i can bypass this temporarily and then get rid of it (from bug reports ive read it seems deleting gnome-do will work)

I can't log in to my current install of 10.04 (x server doesn't start, or whatever, not too concerned about that), and I would like to at least get my files from my home directory, but most of them are inaccessible when I boot up with my LiveUSB of 10.04, due to permissions, I suppose. Is there an easy way to get them? I know the password to my log in,

I just re-sized my windows partition on my laptop and installed 10.04.1. Brand new clean install. I set up my user account, gave it a password, and everything was fine until I tried to connect to my wireless. I typed in the security key for my wireless, and it asked for a password to unlock the default keyring. The problem is, I never set a password for the "default" keyring. I never changed my user password. I didn't auto-login, I entered my password. This was the first boot up of the machine after installing 10.04.1. I can't use Empathy, because the keyring cannot be unlocked. If I "cancel" it gives me an error saying the account details are wrong, but I log into my facebook, aim, and msn every day, so I know the passwords are correct.
I have read about other issues with the keyring and with the auto-login bug that is associated with it. I have also read up on the bug that occurs with that as well. I couldn't find anything about my specific situation, so I hope this isn't a re-post of an issue that has already dealt with, but I did look it up. If it helps, the laptop I am running is a HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx, and I have Ubuntu Desktop 10.04.1 x86 installed. Clean install and the only thing I have done was log in, connect to network, and try to set up Empathy. Both Empathy, and connecting to network, gave me the issues with the keyring. It appears that there is already a password for the default keyring, it is not blank, and my user login password does not work for it. I'm at a loss...

Since upgrading to Meerkat, I have been getting a pop-up window with the message "Enter password to unlock the private key" every time I attempt to ssh into a server that does NOT use password authentication. I know some people like the remember password "feature", but I prefer just a plain unadulterated ssh session in a terminal. Does anyone know how to stop this message?
So far I have unsucessfully tried:
None of the above worked - and I was sure to log out and back in before testing the behavior.

I recently did a clean install of Maverick Meerkat and copied a few configuration files from my old system. I can log on normally, and the system works just fine. However, when I lock the workstation with any method, the system will not accept my password. I'm certain that I'm typing it correctly (I tried over 20 times) and that the capslock is not on. When I reboot, I can log in again just fine. In other words, my password only works at initial login, not when unlocking the workstation.

I've installed lxde from the ubuntu server edition(for less bloat on my netbook)
I installed the lxde metapackage that is in the repository and installed network-manager
In the ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/autologin I put
Quote:
@nm-applet
the problem I now face is that the gnome-keyring is always prompting for a password to unlock the keyring(which I do not want)
I've been trying to find the package that installs the gnome keyring manager to see if I can't tell it to autologin(one of the downsides to installing from scratch is finding the useful apps)

Deviating from Ubuntu standard, for compatibility with another system in our network (an intradisk NAS with restricted admin features) I have to stick with user IDs below 1000 (namely 501, 502, ...)
In the Ubuntu logon screen, the related users are not shown - and thus cannot be selected for unlocking a session that was locked due to inactivity.
