Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Two Of Partitions Not Showing Up
Jul 12, 2011
Objective: To dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7
Problem: When I use Live USB and try to install Ubuntu 11.04, two of my partitions are not showing up.
System:
C2D 3.1 Ghz
6 Gb of Ram
Nvidia 8800 gt
More info:
I have a self built machine which is currently running windows 7 64 bit.
4 hard drives
2 x 1 TB (mirrored)
1 x 500 Gb (single)
1 x 320* Gb (Windows 7 is installed here) <--both do not show up in the installer
*Split into 247 Gb and 73.4 Gb partitions
fdisk -l output
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x76a81caa .....
This happens in Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04, the screen shot above was taken in 10.10. Also I can mount the 247 Gb partition in the Live USB, however doing so does not make it show up in the installer.
Things I have tried:
Unplugging all of the hard drives except for the 320 Gb hard drive, as a result not drives showed up in the installer but where present in Gparted and "Places".

I have what is a weird problem, at least I think it is. I deleted some files and now my partitions do not show up in Gparted. Instead, the entire disk shows up as unallocated space. I am still able to run every partition, one of which is ubuntu and another which is Windows without any other apparent problems. here is my fdisk -l:
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders

I set up a new copy of 10.04, and I encrypted each partition. Now, all of the partitions show up in nautilis.
I have two drives, one has /home, and the other has /, /boot, and a swap area.
Correction, /bbot does not show up, but all of the others show up in nautilis(including swap), but I can't open them, I can just access them normally through /
how I can hide these?

I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 about a week or so ago and since the upgrade when I boot into Ubuntu (I am running a dual boot Ubuntu and win7) other HDD's and partitions often do not show up anywhere on my system. For example I have an ntfs partition that I store music on so I can access it on either windows or ubuntu, as well as other partitions. When this issue occurs even my dvd drive appears not to exist. I have to reboot my machine sometimes 4 or 5 times before the drives/partitions show again. I had no issue like this before running the upgrade or using earlier versions of Ubuntu.

Complete Linux newbie here I've got Ubuntu up and running, and I looked in Storage Device Manager and noticed something strange. My computer has one 80 gig drive with two partitions (XP and Ubuntu) and one 500 gig drive where I store my data. Here's my Fdisk -l:

I had a 500gb hard drive that I wanted to use on my Ubuntu system as a media storage drive. The drive originally had two partitions on it,one was a Dell Recovery partition and the other was a Windows Vista partition. Using the Palimpsest Drive Utility that comes with Ubuntu, I deleted both partitions, created a Ext3 partition using 100% of the space and copied my data to the drive. After I finally got fstab to load the drive, I found another problem. First of all, when Grub loads, two options it offers are:
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc1
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc3
Aside from that, 100% of the drive is not being used by the Ext3 partition. It is showing 434.6gb available on the drive. Fdisk is not showing any other partitions on this drive, so A) why are the Windows loader options showing up under Grub and B) why do I not have 500gb available? Here is a copy of the output fdisk -l:
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9726 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes[code]....

I have 4 virtual disk on AX4-5i. RHEL for some reason shows 16 partitions in /proc/partitions. I got lot-lot of IO errors in dmesg. Some of those 16 partitions "work", others just give (on using fdisk for example): Unable to read /dev/sdb. On EMC I have 4 ports, so it might be somehow releated to this.

I've googled and read docs but got no idea what to do. Any experiences with EMC/RHEL/iSCSI - I just don't understand where those 16 (and half of them not working/giving lotof errors) come from? For example Citrix Xen on similar network conf can see/use same EMC thoughr iSCSI nicely. SO there should'nt be network/auth issues (not using CHAP btw). I got feeling that problem is on RHEL iscsi conf side.

I want to re-setup a raid array on some older drives using mdadm. That involved adding a single partition on 4 of my drives (3 older, 1 brand new - a replacement drive), using mdadm to create the array, etc. However, upon restarting the box, the 3 older drives do not show up as having partitions and hence mdadm cannot immediately start the array because 'there are not enough disks to start'.For example, if I do an ls command before I restart, I will see:
Code:
ls -ltr /dev/sd*1
/dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/sde1

CPU: AMD Athlon II 245 X2
RAM: 2GB DDR2
MB: ASUS M2A74-AM
SATA DVD-Writer
WD 320GB SATA HDD.
SATA Controller is in AHCI mode in BIOS.
Partition Table:
1. Pri. (Windows 7 Ultimate)
2. Log. (Data)
3. Log. 15GB free space (want to install Linux in this partition)
I want to install Debian 5.0.4 from DVD. But the installer is not showing any partitions, it says entire hard disk is blank. But I ran 'fdisk -l' in the console, it shows the partitions correctly.

I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago. After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run
Code:
sudo fdisk -lu
sudo sfdisk -d
sudo parted /dev/sda print
and have received the following output:
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:/mnt$ sudo fdisk -lu
omitting empty partition (5)
Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

I've installed Arch Linux onto my Western Digital SATA drive.I love it, best ever, however, I need the fglrx proprietry driver for better 3-d performace, and decided to create a new partition. I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it

I've reached a point in my Slackware journey where I feel confident enough to remove my Mint 10 linux. It used to be my 'go to distro' when I trashed my Slackware installation. Now, I have Slax on a USB and I think that is enough.Mint 10 occupies /dev/sda5 (root) and /dev/sda6 (home) while Slackware occupies /dev/sda7 (root) and /dev/sda8 (home). If I delete the /dev/sda5 & /dev/sda6 partitions, can I very safely resize /dev/sda7 and /dev/sda8 to use the space freed up?

This doesn't seem to me to be particularly a ubuntu or windows problem, though i made the problem through windows. so I'll post it here and on a Windows forum and if it turns out to be specific to windows then you guys can get mad at me and delete it.
My computer had too many failed OSs and partitions on it and blank space I couldn't access, it was a mess. and I got a free windows 7 upgrade CD from Dell, so I decided to nuke it and start fresh.
I put the CD in, there was the simple upgrade button, didn't want that, went to the other option because i wanted to erase everything and start again. The next screen was a list of partitions. I deleted all partitions except the BIOS in the end. And popped windows 7 on, but it was only reading 300 GB. Windows just says: Local disk: 297, no mention of other partitions under "Disk Management", when there was blank space or linux partitions in the past it read them.
I was hoping all this would be solved when I tried to install Lucid, but it's only reading the 297GB as well. Because of this I assume Gparted will have the same problem
If I did something wrong there's no problem with starting everything over again, all i've installed is firefox on 7 and I'm running the Lucid live disk, but what should I do?

I have a small issue which seems to be really wierd with Ubuntu, I have 4 disks 2x120gb 1x250gb and 1x500gb, during install I can only see the 500gb HD and none of the other, I get an LVM drive during install for 250gb but that's no good (see attachment)
Now if i run the install with "nodmraid" the raid goes away but it only sees the 500gb I can however see the other drives in GPartion if i let the installer go onto live Linux, if i then run the install from live the HD still doesn't show, I tried almost everything I change the sata connections to a different place, I've unplugged a few HD to see if there was conflicts and still nothing.
What's even more wierd however is that this only happens in Ubuntu, any other distro I just pick nodmraid and all the drives show.
Also should say my motherboard is a MSI P43 NEO-F, the 2 120gb HD are Western digital the other 2 are maxtor.
