Ubuntu :: Install Opera By Downloading The Deb File?
Jan 22, 2010I have attempted to install Opera by downloading the Deb file and running:

sudo dpkg -i oopera_10.10.4742.gcc4.qt3_i386.deb
The installation appears to complete itself successfully. However, when I come to then clicking on the new Opera logo in the panel menu, nothing happens. Even after a restart.
What could I be doing wrong? How should I launch Opera?

Apr 30, 2011At the following link, the instructions do not state clearly what is to be entered where and in which order, but here is what I have done after some trial and error:-[URL]..
1. IN THE TERMINAL, enter wget -qO - [URL]..| sudo apt-key add -
2. System - Administration - Software Sources.
3. Click on the 'Other Software' tab.
3. Click the 'Add' button.
5. Copy and paste deb [URL]...stable non-free in the APT Line.
6. Click 'Add Source'.
7. Click 'Close'.
8. Click 'Reload'.
THEN BACK IN THE TERMINAL:-
9. Enter sudo apt-get update (press Enter)
10. Enter sudo apt-get install opera (press Enter)
My question is, the article also makes it seem as if Installing via repository is different to Installing via shell. Is this correct or is installing via shell just additional steps required as part of the installation from repository?

Mar 19, 2010I've just installed ubuntu and wanted to give it a go. However trying to download and installing my favorite browser I get an error: Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libqt3-mt (>= 3.3.4) im downloading the default package, and ran the package install thingy. I googled around trying to find a solution, but I found mostly for older versions of ubuntu and dont know if they apply to my problem. I also tried some tips I found running a command with something like sudo apt-get install libqt3-mt. then i end up with this response:

May 18, 2010Just a little question about installing the Adobe Flash Player. I downloaded the Flash Player library in tar.gz format directly from Adobe. I want to install it in the default plug-in directory for Opera, which is /usr/lib/opera/plugins. When I try to copy the file, I get an error saying that I do not have the sufficient permissions to copy a file to that directory. Does anyone know how to copy the file using the command line, using the SUDO command?

Mar 31, 2010I was trying to install the flash-plugin rpm so that flash contents can be viewed from web pages. So I downloaded the following rpm from rpm.pbone.net:

Now when I am viewing a web page I cannot see the flash contents. When I am running rpm -qa flash* to search if flash is installed or not, its giving the following error:

I tried removing the package and install it again, removing and installing with --replacepkgs option and I also tried to install it without removing which said that it is already installed.

Sep 4, 2010Ubuntu 10.04 and just installed it on this computer with Wubi. I had a previous version of Ubuntu on another computer and did some programming on it. My issue is that downloading a software package from the Ubuntu Software Center or the Synaptic Package manager rarely works. The download proceeds at 1000B/sec and when it gets to applying changes, it stalls out. Now, my Internet connection is solid and i can easily stream videos and download files at over 2 MB/sec.

Mar 22, 2011I mean, I have the latest version of ISO (Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat) downloaded on my computer and then i) made a startup USB disk using Ubuntu's built-in startup disk creator and ii) created a bootable CD drive with that downloaded ISO. Then whenever I tried installing it inside Windows*, I notice that the installer (Wubi) begins downloading the entire ISO from the Internet. I tried disconnecting the network but that returns an error and the installation stops. I remember my good days with installing Ubuntu Karmic Koala using Wubi on my computer. It never started downloading.
The problem appears to occur with Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 (I don't care about Natty yet, though). I want to know why this happens. Since the entire ISO is here, why would it want to download the entire ISO from the Internet? It's impossible to let it download. Is there any possible solution to this problem? The reason I'm trying to install Ubuntu inside windows is that I don't want to mess with Grub. My brother installed Ubuntu on his hard drive in a separate partition and when he uninstalled it for some reason, he couldn't log in to Windows because grub was there and MBR was missing.

Jul 30, 2010Have you had to download drivers for GNU/Linux and install them when some device didn't work? Except nVidia/ATi drivers I mean. Just like in Windows. Or the only driver you can download for GNU/Linux is a driver for videocard and all other are in always in the system?

May 20, 2010Very new to linux, just downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 and installed it, dual boot, no problems with initial installation.
Trying to install graphics card driver for:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G92 [GeForce 8800 GTS 512] (rev a2)
Using Administration -> Hardware Devices
I selected the recommended driver and clicked activate. Download started then failed with error message:
SystemError: Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...ntu3_amd64.deb Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.30 80]

Tried several times now and the download doesn't even seem to start any more.
My Internet connection is 3 mobile broadband, which may have something to do with it, bit it seems to be working well at the moment.

Ubuntu :: Can't Login After Installing Natty Beta
Apr 1, 2011I just tried upgrading to the Natty beta. I am having a problem logging in now. When I boot up I get to the GDM login window and try to log in. Then I get an error message that says: Failed to load session "ubuntu" And then I click log out and it just states me back to the login screen. There is no menu to select sessions or anything on the login screen, just the shutdown menu and the clock.
--Edit-- I fixed part of the problem and I can access my sessions now. I can log in using GnomeShell, but any of the other options result in "failed to load session 'ubuntu'" or "failed to load session 'gnome-classic'". I'm getting the feeling something is broken with Gnome, but I don't know what.

Apr 17, 2011I have a first gen mac mini g4 with a non-functioning cdrom drive and no mac os installation in place. I'm attempting to install natty (really any ubuntu OS that will work) through an external usb drive. The only functional machine at my disposal for preparing and partitioning the external usb drive is a seperate intel ubuntu box. I understand that I need to create an Apple_Bootstrap partition with yaboot installed inside so openfirmware can recognize the usb drive as bootable.
how do I create an Apple_Bootstrap partition on my external usb drive through a regular x86 ubuntu box? is "mac-disk" or pdisk commands available for x86 machines if not how or where could I find software to do the job?

Jul 26, 2010I'm on ubuntu 10.04 32-bit desktop. Somehow Opera 10.60 is very slow to load. I just switched from FF to Opera, and (I'm pretty sure, might be dreaming though) that the first few days it was lightning fast.. and now it takes like 10+ secs to load any page.

Jul 5, 2011I have a problem with Opera 11.10. I can't seem to uninstall it. There is no package related to it in Synaptics Package Manager. It isn't listed in the Software Center.
When I search for "opera" in Unity search it shows up and I can launch it. The launch command is "application://opera-browser.desktop/." but there is no file like that in /usr/share/applications folder.
Also, when I install Opera 11.50, then it installs separately and still launches 11.10 from the Unity search.
