View 9 RepliesIn my top right corner I got all my Ubuntu appindicators that come with Ubuntu 11.04. I also have Dropbox, caffeine and screenlets. Problem is that I cant click on dropbox, caffeine, battery indicator, wlan or sound indicator until I first click on messages menu and slide over to appindicator that I need. When screenlets appindicator is not present there is no problem. Its the same when I had Jupiter installed.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI use ubuntu on about 3 machines, have installed it many times, and run it virtually with software and been using Ubuntu and many other distros for about 8 months now. I am still pretty much a noob and when it comes to CLI I have no clue and need it all spelled out for me. So I'll cut to the problem. My problem is that about every 10-15 minutes my netbook (Samsung N130 1.6ghz atom 2GB 800mhz RAM 160GB HDD and 128mb GMA GPU). All of my other ubuntu or any other linux distro for that matter do not have this problem I am about to explain.
So it gives me a false signal that the HDD is in use. Like an example... I'll be browsing a web page and all of a sudden it stops... I'm not running anything else or downloading anything internet is there and just stops. I can move the mouse and when I hover over objects it highlights but a click is unresponsive. And I have noticed everytime it does this it lasts about 20 seconds and the HDD indicator light stays a solid color but when I listen the HDD is it's normal sound (no ripping of data or anything).
I've already installed Ubuntu on an Acer Aspire One ZA3 and there's no battery indicator on the menu. I don't have any battery monitor to add apps to the menu.

The battery icon doesn't show up in the indicator area next to the sound volume when I'm unplugged unless I select to have the icon displayed even when my computer is plugged in. And even then, it doesn't show current battery charge.I have added pmu_battery to /etc/modules , and /proc/pmu/battery_0 has relevant information on battery charge, and emacs seems smart enough to know my battery level.I tried to install pmud, and but that conflicts with pbbuttonsd and removing that would remove ubuntu-desktop! :O (I would like to try pmud and pommed, as those seem to have a better feature set than pbbuttonsd.)
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe Time and Date at the top docking bar is Hanged. It shows Mon, Oct 18, 6:35 PM. That's all. But when I click on it, it shows correct date in Calender. And correct time in the bottom. I believe those gadgets are not updating at all. Cause my Battery indicator is also not working.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Debian Xfce. Packages already upgraded from testing repository. The problem is while acpi command says correct result, the battery indicator in notification tray doesn't. Unplugging or plugging the power cord, the indicator doesn't change.
I added battery monitor (right clicking panel - add new item - battery monitor), same behavior. I already googled, no solution yet.
The Panel gets broken many times. Sometimes the Switch Button vanishes, battery indicator shows up twice.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just downloaded Slack- 13.37 using Filezilla..I downloaded from an FTP server the entire directory of Slackware - Current (32 Bits) ..There were some problems encountered:1. When I selected the entire folder in FZ , the Queue size was reported as 4 GB.2. I started downloading and after significant time , still the Queue size was reported as around 3.8 GB..I was perplexed as I have a decent bandwidth and it cannot be. To dispel my doubt , I saw the properties of the Slackware directory in which it was downloading. It showed 1.9 GB.. Is the Q size not dynamic? (Total size - Downloaded size)
3. I was on the edge of my seat as my HDD had only roughly about 4 GB ...So , the Q size was kinda misleading..In a haste , I thought I would remove 2 big installations and wiped off Openoffice as anyway I was planning to go in for libre...I moved some other files to a different partition to ensure additional space4. At the end , early in the morning I woke up and saw it had finished ..But there was a failed transfer of 1 hidden file ..There is still 450 MB left in my partition, dont know why it got omitted.5. Now I want to check the integrity of the download bfor burning to a DVD..Should I use md5 sum? I am not able to determine slackware size by googling...In fact I should have gone in for a pre compiled ISO instead of this directory! But it wasnt available yesterday..6. Is there any good download manager like DAP/ Orbit / Leechget which also gives options like turning off comp after download (useful for overnight installs)...The DW helper in Mozilla is not that good ...I want a utility to split the download into 4/5 channels and speed up the download and most importantly show a graphical menu clearly showing Speed, Size, Time left , etc similar to windows DM
i've just installed openSUSE 11.3 on my dell studio xps 1640. but i have problem with my WLAN . it's a WLAN 1640 mini-card and i think there is no problem with driver. because it seems that it's installed correctly but i can't see any wireless networks (it says "Device is not ready"). is there any suggestions?by the way, when i turn my wireless to on (it's a touch key not a switch) only my bluetooth indicator is enabled not my wifi indicator.
View 6 Replies View RelatedJust installed 9.10 followed by a 10.04 upgrade (wouldn't work as a 10.04 clean install). The install and upgrade all seemed to go well.
But now when booting I get a message saying "checking battery state" and then it boots no further. This is a laptop without a battery installed, running permanently from the mains through the charger.
How can I disable this check so that the laptop will still boot without a battery fitted?
getting back to our laptop, the stability window is ~3.2V. Meaning that when you operate the battery above this the electrolyte is oxidized on the positive electrode and reduced on the negative electrode. Remember that we only want to oxidize and reduce the active materials and don't want to do anything else. All these reactions other than the ones we want are called side reactions and these are really bad for the battery. The nominal voltage of a laptop battery is 3.7 V which means that something bad wants to happen as we use the battery. So long story short, stuff (e.g., passive layers and poor kinetics of reactions) happens and things are not as bad as they seem and you can increase the voltage up to 4.2V without bad things really happening. All chargers for Li-ion cells today cut the battery off when it reaches 4.2V. What you have to realize is that at 4.2V, these side reactions are present in finite amounts and start to chemically kill the battery, but its not that dramatic.
Operating to 4.1V makes things better and extends the life, 4.0 V is even better and so on. So why don't battery manufacturers cut the voltage off at, say, 4 V to get better battery life? Because every time you cut this voltage down you decrease the capacity of the battery and its run time. The 4.2V cutoff is a compromise between good run time and decent (read "not pathetic) life.On the other hand, if you charge the battery and then pull the plug (so to speak), the battery discharges some, the voltage drops, and these reactions become less of a problem and your battery life goes up. So the best things you can do is to charge the laptop (or cell phone, camera etc.) and once its charged, pull the plug. Your battery will thank you for it.As a matter of fact, if you own a Lenovo Thinkpad, you can actually change the state of charge to which you charge the battery using the Battery Maintenance utility. You can change this from charging to 100% state (where the voltage is 4.2V) to 90% so that your voltage is less. You lose some energy is doing that, but atleast you can change it to 100% when you need battery power and put it back down to 90% when you can plug in. I wish my Mac has the same feature.
I typically use the battery for a while (say 1/2 hour to 1 hour), then plug it in and wait to fully charge it, then I pull the plug and use it again for 1/2 hour to 1h and then I repeat this. Takes some getting used to and I forget to do this, but I try.
I have a 3 year old laptop with the original battery and its drained pretty bad. The "Battery may be broken" popup was driving me insane and this is how you disable it, in case you are in the same situation as me. Open terminal
Code:
gconf-editor
Drill down to...
apps --> gnome-power-manager --> notify
uncheck the low_capacity checkbox. This should disable the popup for you if your battery has little life left in it. Now, if any knows how to disable the Avahi popup, let me know.
I've tried other solutions, but none work for me.Here is my .conkyrc
Code:

I have a Logitech G15 v2 keyboard and whenever i shutdown my computer the num lock light stays on. I have to pull off the keyboard's USB cable off after i turn off my computer. After that, it stays unlit.Already tried looking around in BIOS if there were any setting for it, found nothing. Happens on my other keyboard too. Also, all fans and everything in my computer but that num lock light turns off.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure if this is an issue with Ubuntu or with the BIOS. Basically when I start up my computer, the ondemand governor seems to work just fine (ranging from 800 MHz to 2200 MHz). However after some indeterminate amount of time, it will get stuck at 800 MHz and I'm not able to figure out how to get it to scale properly again.
When I restart my computer, it acts normal again for some time before locking in at the lowest frequency.
It seems like it may be related to this post: [URL]. The last post in that thread mentioned that it could be related to the temperature, that may be the case in my situation. Even if the temperature is low after it locks to the lowest frequency, it won't increase the speed as needed
My question is, is there any way to override this and let the CPU continue to run at higher frequencies once it locks down to the lowest frequency? My computer doesn't feel like it's getting that hot (it's a laptop), and I'd like to not have to be able to restart it every time this happens.
When I run a program in fullscreen (a ..... video, for example), the taskbar stays on screen. To be abundantly clear, I mean the bar along the top with the power button and user name on it. It stays on the screen, but I can't interact with it; the mouse clicks "under" it as if it weren't there. I'm sure Compiz has something to do with it as it's as new problem, but I don't know how to fix it. I tried disabling Window Decoration, I tried setting it so it only applied to windows with !(state=fullscreen), but nothing seems to work.As a related problem, the menu button in Firefox (the one to the left of the tabs) just appeared out of nowhere. How do I make that go away? And the menu bar as a part of the taskbar doesn't work any more. Where's the option for that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded to 10.04 on Wed and noticed an instability. It's intermittent, so can not tell you what triggers it, but when it kicks off a commandline screen comes up, with a command pointing to some battery monitor software, and I have a desktop, so no battery and wonder why my machine has a battery monitoring software, when none should be installed. Anyway the screen stays up momentarily, then the system tries to go into something like a screen saver and I get all garbage on the screen, loose all ability to control and have to perform a hard reboot to recover from this.

I have no idea what can cause this. I checked the TV settings in terms of power saving and turned it all off. I turned off the screen saver in Ubuntu, but still the same issue. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have tried booting from 2 different Ubuntu CD's (10-04-01 and 10-10) and a Fedora CD.All 3 CD's do the same thing, in Ubuntu I just see the first screen (Keyboard/Battery on the bottom with the guy next to it) and then the screen goes black but the lights, that indicate there's a computer connected and transmitting info onto the screen, are still on.
I know the CD's aren't the problem because they work on 2 other computers I have. The CD drive isn't the problem because took it out of a working computer and that booted up fine with the CD's.I've restored BIOS to default settings.I've tried booting with 1 stick of ram at a time but still doesn't boot.I've left the computer on for 3 hours but nothing appeared on the screen and the lights never turned off. It was just a black screen, nothing on it, not even a blinking cursor.I know it's capable of booting up CD's because the Windows XP setup disc boots.
I'm using LXDE and everything has been fine up until yesterday something strange happened. My panel no longer stays on top of everything. Whatever window I have open when dragged will be over it. I want the panel to go back to how it was but none of the settings seem to fix the problem. I went into the panel settings and I tried reserve space and the dock panel option but to no avail. how to restore it to being on top of everything?
