Ubuntu :: PC Freezes And Nothing Can Be Done But Hard Reboot

Sep 24, 2010

my pc freezes and nothing can be done but hard reboot. I apologize in advance if this thing is brought up before and for the length of my post. I have found a lot of interesting relevant stuff like URL... and URL... but couldn't resolve it.I am new in Linux and already my main choice of OS.I have Ubuntu 10.04, fully updated. Runs on an ASUS P5Q (listed in Ubuntu compatible m/b's) with ATI Radeon 4800 (don't know if relevant). In the last week approximately, I have realized that in seemingly random times the system freezes. I am not absolutely sure if this was something that could have happened earlier on, but it just didn't occur. It appears that this started after some update. The interesting part is that it came to my attention that it is 100% certain that will freeze during a file synchronization analysis between usb hdds with Unison (!). This is something I didn't use to do, and of course I have never been able to complete since I have this situation.

After that, two things come to my mind. One is, I wonder why the sync process provokes this, and if has got anything to do with all things said about X freezes, ACPI or hardware acceleration. Second, I wonder how on earth I could locate the relevant updated packages and rollback. You see, last week I remember at least 4-5 updates with 5-10 packages updated. Running through the dpkg log doesn't help me a lot, the list is fairly big, and I believe for a result not exactly guaranteed

Fedora :: Screensaver Freezes To Hard Reboot Using 13 And Repo KDE?

Aug 29, 2010

when I leave the computer and xscreensaver - which I have a link to in my .kde/Autostart directory - starts up, all hell breaks loose. I don't know if my desktop compositing is doing this (I have an ATI Radeon x1200 card with stable Mesa GL, seems to run compiz just fine) or if one of the individual screensavers is b0rked but it always seems to end with me coming back to a still-life shot of my computer screen with a BRIGHT BLUE translucent stripe across the top. Alt-SysRq-K doesn't do anything from that point on, Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't do anything and I have to hit the power button. I don't have multiple screensaver programs running at once, I've already disabled the native KDE saver. I never had this problem with GNOME, but couldn't enable compositing on it either.

FYI for anyone that feels the need to ask, I use the "radeon" driver and my glxinfo is thus:

Quote:

bash-4.1$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Desktop On Top Of Server - Reboot It Freezes During Startup ?

Feb 15, 2011

For some reason my disc I burned for ubuntu desktop 10.10 freezes when I get to the ubuntu logo with the 5 dots. I am able to install ubuntu server just fine.

I tried to install desktop on top of server using sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop and then whenever I reboot it freezes during startup.

I think it might be my swap partition. I recall seeing a blip of an error talking about "press C to skip or M to start maintenence" or something like that. It never stayed on the screen long enough for me to read it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Reboot Freezes PC At BIOS Screen?

Sep 1, 2011

I have a problem where my PC will stop at the BIOS logo screen after a reboot. The keyboard and mouse don't get power ie no lights. I can power off / on and it will boot normally. The problem started after a fresh install and after installing the updates. ie before updates I could reboot and it was ok. I moved from Slackware and have Win7 and they don't have this problem. Also Ubuntu and Arch rebooted normally when I tried them. I have Opensuse 11.4 x64 on it's own HDD (Samsung F3) The system board is an Asus P8P67 Deluxe (Sandy Bridge) and the HDD is on a SATA3 port. Could it have something to do with the EFI BIOS? Would it be worth trying a newer kernel? it may better support my hardware. I'm hesitant as I don't want to break Lirc as it took awhile to get it working properly on the stock kernel.

Also where can I add '/etc/init.d/lirc restart' so I don't have to run it manually every time time I launch XBMC. I couldn't find 'rc.local'

Debian Hardware :: System Freezes And Requires A Reboot In Order To Restore Connectivity

Nov 26, 2015

I have a home server running Debian Wheezy ( 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.68-1+deb7u6 x86_64 GNU/Linux). I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B NIC and an Intel 82574L. I saw while searching Google that both cards have this issue. I'm currently using the Realtek card for LAN connectivity. If I try to tranfer large files via SAMBA or have any kind of load on the NIC, my system freezes and requires a reboot in order to restore connectivity. The error message from kern.log is:

Nov 26 02:41:53 golgotha kernel: [ 5178.413329] AMD-Vi: Event logged [IO_PAGE_FAULT device=0a:00.0 domain=0x0021 address=0x0000000000003000 flags=0x0050]

Everything runs fine until I try to do a large file tranfer or have multiple users connected.

lspci returns:

Also, I've rolled the driver back to rtl_nic/rtl8168f-1.fw and currently have that installed, but the error still occurs.

Ubuntu :: How To Avoid A Hard Reboot

on a Vimeo video in Firefox, and my computer became "partially frozen". The video stopped, but the audio continued to play to the end, but I couldn't clear the video. I pressed ctrl-f2 to switch to my other desktop, but it just brought up a blank screen, and switching back makes no difference. As it stands I have a black screen with my mouse cursor on it (I can move the cursor, yes). I'm new to linux, and I want to know if there are any keyboard shortcuts I could try to fix this. I'd rather not hard reboot whenever I run into a problem, I just don't know the terms to google for

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Freezes / Locks Up When Using Hard Drive?

May 5, 2010

I've just installed 10.04 as a dual boot with Windows 7. I did a clean install removing my old 9.10 install.I really like all the changes I've seen so far and everything seems to work smoothly except when the HD is being used a lot everything freezes and then un-freezes again and again until the file operation has stopped. The problem really only comes up with heavy operations like moving large files (I moved a 10gb vdi from my Windows partition to Ubuntu) and when backintime does it's daily backup.ometimes I can continue using it then it'll freeze I wait.. can use it again for a bit then it will freeze again.'ve never had problems with transferring large files on the Windows 7 install so I don't think there's a hardware problem. I can't seem to find anything I've been searching for two days now. I did find something about a problem with backintime/ext4 partitions but the solution hasn't helped.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Stopped Working After Hard Reboot?

The green light on the NIC is lit up and blinking. I have changed no settings. It used to get an IP address from the DHCP no problem, but ifconfig now only shows 127.0.0.1.

Ubuntu :: Server Disappears From Network Hard Reboot Required

Nov 15, 2010

I've been having issues with my ubuntu server (10.04 LTS) lately. Every once in a while, anywhere from 3 days to a month or more, the server will just disappear from the network. All manner of trying to reach it from the outside fails, even from the LAN. Since it's headless, this is kind of problematic. After a hard power down or reboot, the server will always come back online, but this is very annoying for a remotely administered server.

What should I look for when trying to determine why the server keeps going offline? I can't tell if there are any other issues like a hard lockup or anything, just that it is not on the network anymore when this happens.

General :: Hard Drive Dropping Out Of RAID On Reboot

May 30, 2011

Every time I reboot my server, one of my hard drives drops out of the RAID5 array. I'm pretty sure that there's nothing wrong with the drive itself. I bought all three drives at the same time, and they are identical in make/model/capacity. While the server is running, it's smooth sailing. However, whenever I shut down or reboot, I get an email message that the array is degraded. It's always /dev/sda1 that drops out of the array. I can always rebuild the array by adding the partition back in, but it's a bit of a pain. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.

I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 64bit Install Freezes After Reboot During Autoconfiguration - GeForce 9300 Chipset (MCP7A)

Sep 15, 2010

I just wanted to install openSUSE 11.3 64bit. Installation works fine until reboot request. It switches to console, saying that it tries to load without reboot, screen becomes black, i got a cursor with animated wait-symbol and then it freezes. Can't move the mouse, no reaction on keyboard inputs, HDD-led not blinking. If I reset my PC and boot the new installation, it says that an error occurred and asks me to complete the unfinished installation. It starts auto-configuration and freezes again at about 3%. I tried again and some time it did not start the graphical yast but in textmode. The freeze came at the same position, but it posted many lines on console with error messages. I could not scroll, so I saw only parts of it, saying kernel panic and many addresses.

I guessed that it has to do with my chipset and graphics card, it is a nVidia GeForce 9300 chipset (MCP7A) with onboard graphics. It works fine with openSUSE 11.2 64bit by the way, but it was not supported in earlier versions than 11.2. So I tried to install it with proprietary drivers. I started the installation again and added the nVidia repository and a Packman repo and selected the driver which works fine on 11.2. Error was same as above. Next I tried an openSUSE 11.3 32bit Live CD that came with some PC magazine and lay around and it is booting and works fine!

This was confusing to me, so I wanted to try the 64bit version of the live CD. Which was again not booting. It freezes at some part, maybe when it tries to start X. But it also freezes booting with 'nomodeset' (found it somewhere here), in VESA mode and even in textmode! So i guess it's not X what causes the freeze. But it is sometime at the end of booting up, as far as I can say. I would like to use the 64bit version but I don't know where to search for the problem. I checked every checksum before burning, so a broken media should not be the reason

Ubuntu :: Damaged Hard Drive And Interrupted Update - Message Appears When Run Command Is Added Then Freezes

Apr 10, 2010

A section of the hard drive on my laptop is damaged but the laptop has genearlly been running fine as it seems to very rarely touch that section (once every few months). However, when installing some updates the computer has hit that section which means it becomes unresponsive and makes a nasty clunking sound every 10s or so. Because of this I've had to abort the update but now whenever I try to run 'dpkg --configure -a' to sort out the problem caused by the interrupted update I get the same freezing up and clunking. The message that appears when I run the command is adding extension /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.0/program/mailmerge.py... and then it freezes.

Software :: Virtualbox On Sid - VM - The Screen Goes Black Then Computer Completely Stops Responding - Needs Hard Reboot

I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Hardware :: SATA Error -> Sys Hard Reboot On Suse 11.3. Board + Hdd Changed - Error

Feb 1, 2011

i actually registered here because i'm done with my knowledge of linux, errors which cause my sys to hang and/or reboot randomly after some time. They occur while the system is under heavy cpu, heavy mem-read-write, mediocre mem fill, heavy hdd io (for ~20 seconds every ~5 minutes).

problem background we ordered two identical PCs (specs below), one of them brought those sata errors quoted below from /var/log/messages, the other one runs flawlessly. Same Hardware and Software Configuration. Faulty one brought reallocated sectors right at start, mass seek errors, read errors. 1st try: swap cables, change bios mode ata_piix <-> AHCI. Didn't work. Went away for repair. Stupid Techie did only swap hdd, so problems occured again. Shipping for repair again. Board AND hdd exchanged. no more seek/read errors, no more reallocated sectors. But similar sata problems right after 3 days of previously described workload. Following logs are from after the last repair.
