I cannot begin to describe. All those hours of downloading for nothing! What the heck is happening here? When I try to just continue on, I get error code 3 aborts and have to just start all over.
I have a PC104 running debian. I have 3 hard drives (in addition to the one booting) mounted in fstab by UUID. I use the options defaults,error=remount-ro. However, this means that when I boot with the hard drives not attached, I have to press Ctrl-D to bypass when the boot discovers the drives are missing. Is there a timeout commandoption I can add to fstab so that it automatically continues booting even if the hard drives are not attached? I could not find anything on a timeout command. (I tried adding timeout=1000 but no-random guess)
View 5 Replies View RelatedEvery time I reboot my server, one of my hard drives drops out of the RAID5 array. I'm pretty sure that there's nothing wrong with the drive itself. I bought all three drives at the same time, and they are identical in make/model/capacity. While the server is running, it's smooth sailing. However, whenever I shut down or reboot, I get an email message that the array is degraded. It's always /dev/sda1 that drops out of the array. I can always rebuild the array by adding the partition back in, but it's a bit of a pain. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

After the first start I've make the update (suggested by the OS) and, after make the reboot....same problem. Now, being a linux noob I need help on two questions :
1). Why only 'sda1' is shown when using df -h to get disk space usage, and what else needs to be done to check stats for 'sdb' ?
2). My PHP script needs to save a lot of 'cache' files, how to make the script use the second disk for saving the files - I mean what path should I edit in my script (current is '/var/www/html/tmp')
I want to make the transition from windows (sick of it). Im using Lenovo G530 Laptop and was wondering which would be the best Linux Os (meaning Ubuntu, fedora or something else). Keep in mind that I mostly use my laptop for college work and a lot of video and audio editing. I also want to be able to run Dual operating system (meaning that I wanna run both Linux and Windows) from the same computer as it might be easier for me to make the transition a little bit more easier. That being said I need someone to give me tutorials (video preferred) on how to make the partitions on the hard disk and step by step instruction on how to install both the two OS in my laptop.

I got myself a dell laptop from the local computer store. Its a used machine with Windows Vista Home Basic on it. I want to load Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 though so I can do perl development. BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.

Here is the problem: The volume Genomes (or /genomes) is half full
sudo df -ah
/dev/mapper/home--data-Genomes
1,9T 850G 920G 49% /genomes
but the system states it as full whenever I try to add more data (tried cp and rsync). There is no quota set to the volume (I have quotas in place for users home folders. These are only for max amount of disk space, not max file number, and I am still able to move/add files elsewhere so there seems to be no interference).
one would have to exclude certain folders / directories but would the backup be possible if the system is up and running in its native "live" state ? Which directories could be excluded ? Does swap need to be turned off ? I would like to make incremental backups on a separate partition of the same hard drive. I will endeavour to backup the MBR/ Partition table using dd.

But from what I have been reading, rsync is better becasue it will basically mirror your hard drive, thus being able to run the cloned software from the new hard drive. My problem is I do not know what is the best commands or even the basic commands to use in rsync. I am trying to make an image from a external hard drive to a usb drive. That way my chances of messing up he original software is not as risky becasue I'll just restore the image onto another hard drive. Does anyone know the best script to have rsync make an image file of a hard drive and place it on a usb drive and then restore it?

I have found a lot of interesting relevant stuff like URL... and URL... but couldn't resolve it.I am new in Linux and already my main choice of OS.I have Ubuntu 10.04, fully updated. Runs on an ASUS P5Q (listed in Ubuntu compatible m/b's) with ATI Radeon 4800 (don't know if relevant). In the last week approximately, I have realized that in seemingly random times the system freezes. I am not absolutely sure if this was something that could have happened earlier on, but it just didn't occur. It appears that this started after some update. The interesting part is that it came to my attention that it is 100% certain that will freeze during a file synchronization analysis between usb hdds with Unison (!). This is something I didn't use to do, and of course I have never been able to complete since I have this situation.
After that, two things come to my mind. One is, I wonder why the sync process provokes this, and if has got anything to do with all things said about X freezes, ACPI or hardware acceleration. Second, I wonder how on earth I could locate the relevant updated packages and rollback. You see, last week I remember at least 4-5 updates with 5-10 packages updated. Running through the dpkg log doesn't help me a lot, the list is fairly big, and I believe for a result not exactly guaranteed
on a Vimeo video in Firefox, and my computer became "partially frozen". The video stopped, but the audio continued to play to the end, but I couldn't clear the video. I pressed ctrl-f2 to switch to my other desktop, but it just brought up a blank screen, and switching back makes no difference.As it stands I have a black screen with my mouse cursor on it (I can move the cursor, yes). I'm new to linux, and I want to know if there are any keyboard shortcuts I could try to fix this. I'd rather not hard reboot whenever I run into a problem, I just don't know the terms to google for

I was in the process of installing the ubuntu-restricted packages (apt-get was halfway into setting-up libtwolame0) when the machine locked up and I was forced to do a hard reboot. View 6 Replies View Relatedwhen I leave the computer and xscreensaver - which I have a link to in my .kde/Autostart directory - starts up, all hell breaks loose. I don't know if my desktop compositing is doing this (I have an ATI Radeon x1200 card with stable Mesa GL, seems to run compiz just fine) or if one of the individual screensavers is b0rked but it always seems to end with me coming back to a still-life shot of my computer screen with a BRIGHT BLUE translucent stripe across the top. Alt-SysRq-K doesn't do anything from that point on, Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't do anything and I have to hit the power button. I don't have multiple screensaver programs running at once, I've already disabled the native KDE saver. I never had this problem with GNOME, but couldn't enable compositing on it either.
FYI for anyone that feels the need to ask, I use the "radeon" driver and my glxinfo is thus:

I just got ubuntu installed for the first time, I tried mounting my hard drive to my desktop so i can have easy access to it, but when i restart ubuntu it always dissapears and i have to go to places then click on the hard drive again to mount it to my desktop.
Is there a way of keeping this on the desktop without having to do this all the time? I have the latest ubuntu version.
I have a computer with 2 internal hard drives and one of them doesn't show up in the bios until I reboot. Almost every time. Does this mean the drive is going to fail or the cable is bad or what?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded a few tar.gz programs and trying to follow the instructions always come to the command "make". The result is a printout stating there is no make command. The last program had a "makeinstall" but that wasn't recognised either. I am no a new comer. I have been using Ubuntu for nearly four years and I have only succeeded in installing two programs and that was at least two and a half years ago. Since then I've had no luck whatsoever. Is there anyone out there that can tell me, in simple English, leaving out no steps, how in the h*** I can download and install a tar.gz program?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer wouldn't come out of sleep mode, so I had to shut it down improperly. Now there's no ethernet network connection. The NIC works as I can start the computer by wake-on-lan, but somehow Ubuntu no longer sets up a network connection on it.
The green light on the NIC is lit up and blinking. I have changed no settings. It used to get an IP address from the DHCP no problem, but ifconfig now only shows 127.0.0.1.
I've been having issues with my ubuntu server (10.04 LTS) lately. Every once in a while, anywhere from 3 days to a month or more, the server will just disappear from the network. All manner of trying to reach it from the outside fails, even from the LAN. Since it's headless, this is kind of problematic. After a hard power down or reboot, the server will always come back online, but this is very annoying for a remotely administered server.
What should I look for when trying to determine why the server keeps going offline? I can't tell if there are any other issues like a hard lockup or anything, just that it is not on the network anymore when this happens.
