Every time i reboot my computer my hard drive mount points keep changing which means the mount points i've put in the fstab wont work any more.
I'm using the same settings as i had before i upgraded the OS to what it currently is.
Im using fedora 12
My disk 1 for example would be as follows:
before: /dev/sda3
after: /dev/sdd3
I'm running Opensuse 11.2 and am using a couple of USB hard drives to store large data. One of these drives is formatted with FAT32 and one with NTFS. When I plug-in a USB device KDE4 shows me a little pop-up asking what I want to do with it, I select to open it in Dolphin which of course automatically mounts it.
My question is what if I want to change some of the mount options - is this possible without reverting to manual mounting? And second question is what system does it use to automount - Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu are all deprecating HAL in favour of pure udev, is this the case in Opensuse too?

When I installed OpenSuse 11.2 it mounted I configured to mount all of my windows/NTFS partition. However, one problem is that only root can write to it. I was trying to change it to '777' permission. However, as root I can't change permission. chmod doesn't work and neither does using nautilus (as root) work.I even tried unmounting it and then doing a chmod. That didn't work either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'v been trying to install Ubuntu (and actually all other dists of linux (in hope of succes), but running ubuntu on my other machines and prefer it) on my old laptop. Laptop Acer Aspire 1312XC. Have just run a 24 hour RAM test it turned out ok. Have tried with other RAM blocks in aswell. The install freezes at random points in the installation. Mainly when trying to copy files to the hard drive. The only thing i've succeded in installing was Ubuntu server and windows XP. I have tried with ACPI off and all the other special atributes. No success so far.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have inherited a large number of external drives. Some are mechanical drives. Others are flash. Most are USB. Some are Secure Digital (SD) or Compact Flash (CF) or similar "media" cards. Currently, on connection, everything gets mounted automatically into a folder that is part of /media. If the drive has a "label", the mount point is /media/driveLabel. I don't want to guess or search for where this stuff gets mounted and so I'd like to "manage" all of this somehow. Q1: Are there any end-user, desktop tools to help manage a large pool of external drives?
I know that udev rules operate to accomplish the drive device creation, configuration and mounting in a automatic way. Q2: Are there any utilities that make it easy to administer where to mount drives, what to do when each drive gets mounted, how and when to notify the end user? and so on.
After a reboot (why did I do that???) one of the hard drives on my machine refuses to mount with the following message:

I installed Fedora 12 and it won't reboot from hard drive. It boots only from installation CD. I have motherboard MS 6163 and graphic card Nvidia TNT2 pro. Do I have to change something in BIOS setup? If I need to install another driver for NvidiaAnd, please tell me if some other Linux package is better for my hardware.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI just got ubuntu installed for the first time, I tried mounting my hard drive to my desktop so i can have easy access to it, but when i restart ubuntu it always dissapears and i have to go to places then click on the hard drive again to mount it to my desktop.
Is there a way of keeping this on the desktop without having to do this all the time? I have the latest ubuntu version.
Every time I reboot my server, one of my hard drives drops out of the RAID5 array. I'm pretty sure that there's nothing wrong with the drive itself. I bought all three drives at the same time, and they are identical in make/model/capacity. While the server is running, it's smooth sailing. However, whenever I shut down or reboot, I get an email message that the array is degraded. It's always /dev/sda1 that drops out of the array. I can always rebuild the array by adding the partition back in, but it's a bit of a pain. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

I would like to "share" a directory which exists above these chroots with all these caged users. I know this can be accomplished using mounts but my problem is, how can I mount a single directory to multiple mount points located in each users home dir? Can this be done in the fstab file?
View 9 Replies View RelatedHave openSUSE 11.1 and (AFAIK) KDE 4 on an older notebook; worked OK for weeks, then booting became a problem and the OS seemed to go to sleep between keystrokes: now the cursor stops blinking, the clock stops running, and nothing happens after clicking a radio button until the mouse moves. Am now 25 minutes into a reboot, hung at "Unmounting file systems" but it also hung for a while when changing run levels. Is this related to the stability problems with 11.1 I've read about? Possibly KDE? Where would I adjust a config to use kde 3.5 rather than 4?

I was using Ubnntu Server which is good but i have decided to change the way that i am going to use the server and have installed Xubuntu over ubuntu server. However in the installation the hard drives shwn when it asked where i would like to install the operateing system. It installed sucessfully and is working but it cant mount my other hard drive which has all of my data on it.
I had tried mounting it throught the command prompt and had no success. After which i have checked if the the toher hard drive is being reconised by Xubuntu and it is as sdb1 but i caqnt mount it and get to my data. I hoped that i can try and put in my ubuntu live cd and see if it can pick the seoncd hard drive up and mount it which it has not been able to.
I have 2 20 gigabyte hard drives atm the moment and i am not adding the others until i can get to all my stuff again form the other hdd.

I want to pull a few things off this external hard drive I have that is an ubuntu install from last year. However, my mac won't recognize the file system and mount it so I can pull the few files I need off of it.
What's the trick to getting a mac to find an ubuntu hard drive?
My other option is removing my laptop hard drive, installing the ubuntu one, opening ubuntu manually, burning the information I need to a CD, or a usb key, and then removing the ubuntu hard drive, and reinstalling my mac osx drive to the laptop bay.

I know the drive is sda the only partition on it being sda1, but either I get an error saying it couldn't be found or I simply get no response depending on how I alter the code
Oh also the drive shows hpfs/ntfs 0x07 in the disk utility
I have just installed Oracle Enterprise Linux. (which i believe is build on redhat). This copy of linux is installed on one hard drive, in the system there is another hard drive and also an SSD.
How can I mount the SSD and other hard drive so that I can read and write to them?

When I plug it in (suse 11.2 x86_64 gnome version), it won't automount, a message appears ".../dev/sr2 is not a valid block device", I can not mount it manually neither Don't have a clue how to proceed in solving this issue. The drive is a bit strange though, it has some software on it for protecting data, which I wont need, but can't get rid of it neither. However when I connected it to my laptop running ubuntu 9.10 x86_64, the drive automounted ok, so I guess I must be missing some additional software on my suse. The drive was initially NTFS formated, but I did reformat it to FAT with ubuntu.

I have a directory made (/media/iso) that I would like to mount it in, but if that doesn't work then I don't care where it goes. After I mount it I want to be able to run it using Wine, but that will come later. For now I just need to get it mounted. And, of course, I am fairly new to linux/ubuntu.

I have 2 external drives that my UBUNTU 9.10 doesn't recognize, although I can see them perfectly in Win XP.I was using them in Ubuntu until 2 weeks ago, when this problem started and I can't find a way to see/mount them again.
