I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and currently have OpenJDK java 6 installed. I am trying to run a program called BioLayout Express3D which I am using for my genetics honours project however each time I launch it it loads but immediatelly crashes with the error

OpenJDK has recently updated. Problem is that I am using the JDK from Sun/Oracle which I downloaded and installed along with other java tools and IDE's. I notice that openJDK is now the default JDK on the system.

Now my own java build is configured in $PATH but ignored, this is not good as I do a lot of java development. I would like to disable the OpenJDK or even remove it. I would also like to disable the update manager for this particular package and it's other add ons.
how do I uninstall Java? Tried with Synaptic and apt-get remove, but uninstalling sun-java6 automatically adds default-jre (openjdk) and uninstalling openJdk automatically installs sun-java ... but I don't want ANY Java on my machine - am I missing something? Already thought I maybe have a package that requires SOME kind of Java, but how do I find out?

Last nights upgrade of java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-43.1.8.2.fc13.i686 and java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-43.1.8.2.fc13.i686 prevent the loading of Ameritrades Command Center.Downgrading to version 1.6.0.0-37 fixes the problem. I'll post the bugzilla number as soon as I get the chance to file it.

When trying to reach my bank, I get the following error: Code: icedteanp plugin error: Failed to run /usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk/jre/bin/java. For more detail rerun "firefox -g" in a terminal window. Is there anything I can do to remediate ? Does IcedTea everything that Java does?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy desktop has been running 64 bit 9.10 since an upgrade from 9.04 for 6 months with no problems.
Recently however, my system crashed for the first time. All windows closed and the system hung, attempting to open anything did not work. I would click on an icon or type Alt +F2 and nothing happened . Although my cairo-dock at the bottom of the screen was still running perfectly (including animations Etc.) albeit without any programs working. Trying to click on system manager gave me the message.
"Failed to execute child process 'gnome-system-manager' Input/Output Error"
Trying to reboot several times and selecting previous kernels brought me to a prompt where I was able to check all my important documents were still there, but do nothing else. Recovery mode also did not work.
Eventually I left the computer overnight and started it and Ubuntu loaded normally, then after around 15 minutes the system hung again with identical systems to the first time. Although this time Firefox greyed out first.
This has happened every time I try to boot the computer since and last time it gave me a screen saying Grub Read Error which after 3 reboots has finally allowed me to access my computer (from where I am typing with haste!).
Using lm-sensors I am sure there is not an over heating problem. Am I right in thinking this may be a problem with my hard drive? And if so what is my best course of action? Apologies for the length of this post and thanks for reading.

I have just changed something in preferences for Skins. Then I restarted my vlc media player and now I cant run vlc! I removed and reinstalled vlc Thousand times but it didn't work! When I type vlc in Terminal :

Xorg seems to crash randomly and with no real reason. Once it does, I can't restart it. If I try to restart it with GDM, nothing will happen. However once it crashes, Ubuntu's low graphics mode window pops up. Telling it to reconfigure the xorg config seems to do nothing for my problem. I will still crash after words.
Right now I'm running in an earlier kernel, hoping this will keep it from crasgubg

My desktop decided one day to simply die and not start, whenever I log-in, KDE starts loading then promptly crashes and falls back to login screen. I was unable to find anything useful in logs, but I installed Xfce which runs ok. However when I start any KDE app under it, it crashes with a message:

After reading the sticky on 10.04 regarding java, I would like to know that if I install sun-java from Medibuntu, do I need to uninstall Openjdk and Icedtea? Can these programs coexist? Should I uninstall Openjdk first and then install sun-java? I think the absence of sun-java on my Dell is the root cause of the crashing that is ocurring when I try and access my AOL mail.

Can anyone tell me how I would clear the java cache?
I use jaunty, and everytime i start pidgim it crashes not error message shown, i removed it and installed it again, no sucess. I guess it must be dropping error messages somewhere. Can someone help or provide me where should i be looking for the error messages, i went to system log but could not find it. I tried dmsg | tail , post the crash, did not see anything.

On my Laptop i am trying to Install alongside my current 9.10 installation and i keep getting the errors illustrated in the screenies. I just installed F 15. I have a Java app that I use a lot that is buggy with OpenJDK 6, because OpenJDK 6 is buggy, and apparently it needs OpenJDK 7 to run smoothly. Is there an RPM for OpenJDK 7 somewhere? I haven't been able to find it if it exists.
I also need ffmepg but have been unable to find a RPM for it either I did try to build ffmepg form source but it wouldn't build because it was missing Git what ever that is, which in turn I couldn't find a package for. I'm trying to avoid going on a scavenger hunt to get this installed and that's why I'm looking for an RPM.
If OpenJDK7 and ffmepg do not have RPMs for F 15 what are my best options?
I have both the openjdk-6-jre and sun-java6-jre versions of java installed on my Ubuntu Maverick desktop, with the sun version setup as the default. I was trying to load the web page,URL..., an amateur radio software defined receiver. I can load the page on Firefox run on XP in a VirtualBox machine, but when loaded on Firefox on my Maverick desktop, I wasn't getting any sound with openjdk, so I installed sun's and set it as the default. When I run 'java -version' from the command line, it reports the following:Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_22-b04)Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 17.1-b03, mixed mode)but on firefox, when loading the above page, it reports 'java version test applet 1.6.0_20' on the page. View 3 Replies View RelatedMy sig says 11.3, but I just did a new install to 11.4. I found a small problem with using openjdk 1.6.20 with one of my applications. I use Scottrader, proprietary Java application by Scottrade. It uses ports 80 and 443 for the data streams and I was not getting any data on 443 with openjdk. I stopped the firewall, just in case that was a problem, but it persisted. I solved the problem by installing Sun java 1.6.24, and running update-alternatives to use Sun java as the default. Data on ports 80 and 443 are running to the application now.

This has just been happening the last day or two. SOmetimes Google Chrome will go funny for a minute then the whole system will crash and give me the error "cannot start kmserver. check your installation".Like i said it's just the last day or two.

I went to software center and tried to install "OpenJDK Java 6 runtime" and it says package dependencies cannot be resolved. I tried doing sudo apt-get install through terminal and it was dependent on a long list of things:

I tried to sudo apt-get each one and it led me down the list like that to a dead end.

a. Running java programs on the desktop
b. Running java in the web-browser.
I *think* both of them get installed by default. Openjdk via the default-jre virtual package while icedtea due to some of the openjdk headless packages.

Notice the circular dependency at the end. From what I read the headless packages are basically for those systems where a server is running which does not have have a monitor, in which case I wonder why its installed in my system? My actual issue is of having the java for iceweasel. I did search for having java plugins and did not find anything except for icedtea-plugin to run java on my browser.

I did see the other solutions but most of them recommend downgrading both the openjdk and icedtea packages to the ones in testing rather than in unstable.
I'm running Debian Jessie 64bit, the X-window is xfce4, I found the 'OpenJDK Java 7 Policy Tool' entry is already under the Settings menu, it seems appeared after I customized jessie a little, that installing nvidia driver, virtualbox ose, adobe reader and adobe flash player. From console, I can check there is java, but no javac.For doing java programming, I don't know if the OpenJDK was complete installed or not, should I continue to use it or remove it to install Oracle JDK?
