Ubuntu :: Open Multiple Unique PDF Files In One Applicaiton
Jan 14, 2010
I read a lot of PDF documents using the default Document Viewer and I am wondering whether there is an application or a hack to have several PDF files concurrently open in one application (maybe like tabs in a browser?) since switching between one application to a specific PDF always takes time.(Especially with more than 4 PDF files concurrently running.)

hen I was still using hardy heron, I made a few posts trying to figure out if there was a way to really take advantage of the separate workspaces/desks.Has any progress been made in this direction? I want to do more than move firefox windows around. I want to dedicate a workspace to different projects or aspects of my life. I want to have different icons up in each one that relate to the project I'm working on and only that project

As the title says, I'm interested in two (or more) simultaneous keyboards, each with a unique layout. Everything I've researched indicates this should be possible, but I'm unable to get it to work. Regardless of how I set things up, all keyboards consistently operate as if they share the CoreDevice setting in xorg.conf.
In the above config, both keyboards behave as if they're set for the USA layout. Changing the layout in gnome-keyboard-properties affects all of the connected keyboards equally, but has no provision for altering individual devices.

Have this script which is reading in a series of files, one at a time with while-do-done loop, each file goes through various greps/awk's where this info is then saved to various files for later use. i.e....
Script is being run on Linux Red Hat,
In one of the grep/awk's the output (currently) are 2 columns (min max), i.e....| awk '{print $1, $2}' | sort -u which outputs (e.g.)
The number of "min max" pairs varies from file to file. Want to output a single column of unique numbers from the min max pairs & get the number of them for input to a file...i.e...
Where <PROCESS> is some process/technique that will generate a single column of integers (increment of 1) to pipe into the next one (sort -u)
i.e. (example from above)
Have tried command seq - only works for single pair input i.e.
Is there any command like seq etc which will output a single column based on a input of min max numbers (increment 1) to pipe onwards to next command?

I have a pencil case I carry with a USB hub and 9 USB sticks in it. I like their unique icons and their root windows to pop up upon insertion. If this is answered elsewhere, I looked several times in several ways on google and these forums.
I tried this:
The autorun.inf file on the USB root written this way:
[Autorun]
Action=Start Blue512MB
Icon=BlueFlashIconBlueFlashIcon.ico
Label=Blue512MB
Then put the BlueFlashIcon.ico icon image in a folder titled BlueFlashIcon In Ubuntu (Mav) I get the new personal icon image for that USB stick appearing on the desktop but the USB root window won't pop open automatically when the stick is inserted. I have to dig to the desktop, find it and click it or go into Places on the menu. If when I put nothing special on the flash, no autorun.inf, no icon image, then the window for the USB pops open upon insertion, which I like, but only get the generic icon that looks the same as all 9 external drives. The labels are unique but icons offer faster recognition over reading labels, when they are needed, much nicer to use~
Ideas? Do I have to use .svg icons or another kind of text file? How do I set up a unique icon for each USB drive AND have the window pop up upon insertion?

I've written up a tutorial to get the latest community edition of Liferay up and running on an existing open-source Glassfish Server. All instructions are completed over SSH on an Ubuntu 9.10 Server install with MySql database. Takes about 15min to run all the commands (network and processor dependent)If you'd like to give it a go I've posted the instructions here: How to install Liferay on the Glassfish Application Server over SSH

<br />
<br />
to:
<br />
I've tried
rpl -R '<br />
<br />' '<br />' mydirectory
but that didn't work. how to do this with rpl or some other way?

I am to rename all the files within a directory (which contains multiple subdirectories) recursively without invalid characters.
I tried the coding posted above.
find . -type f -printf '%p
' | while read file; do
oldfile=$(basename "$file")
newfile=$(echo "$oldfile" | sed 's/[^A-Za-z0-9_.]/_/g')
if [ ! "$newfile" == "$oldfile" ]; then
echo mv "$file" "${file%$oldfile}$newfile"
code....
but I get an error on both of them stating "find: bad option -printf find: [-H | -L] path-list predicate-list"

I am trying to compare a list of patterns from one file and grep them against another file and print out only the unique patterns. Unfortunately these files are so large that they have yet to run to completion. Here's the command that I used:
Code: grep -L -f file_one.txt file_two.txt > output.output Here's some example data:
Code:
>FQ4HLCS01BMR4N
>FQ4HLCS01BZNV6
>FQ4HLCS01B40PB
>FQ4HLCS01BT43K
>FQ4HLCS01CB736
>FQ4HLCS01BU3UM
>FQ4HLCS01BBIFQ
how to increase efficiency or use another command?

Server - Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts
Client - Kubuntu 10.10
When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:
"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:
Unknown User
Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem.Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...
relevant entry in /etc/fstab:
server:/nfs/dan/Documents /home/dan/Documents nfs defaults 0 0
relevant entry in server's /etc/exports:
/nfs/dan/Documents client(rw)

I have a while(1) loop, and the error is: glibtop: open (/proc/stat): Too many open files This error occurs after about a half hour to an hour of running. I've tried running this multiple times, both with using glib_close() at the end of the loop, using glib_init() and glib_close() at beginning/end, and just using glib_init(). The strange thing is these have no effect on the actual glib_get functions.

For a while now, every time that I log back into my desktop from hard start or from restarting the X server, I get these 3 terminal konsole windows that are open on my first desktop environment. It's seems as though whatever work I was doing when I had those 3 konsole windows open got saved somewhere and is reopening them every time I get back onto the desktop. I've tried to locate the problem by looking in .bash_profile and .bashrc but to no avail. If anyone has a solution to this, that would be awesome.

I don't want to have this done at login, i want to pick and choose when I open them all.

I sometimes have two similar files that one works and one doesn't. I would like to compare the differences. But TEXT EDITOR opens two files in two tabs making it impossible to compare the data side by side.
Is there a way to make Text editor open a separate window for each file? Browsers usually have such an option to choose multiple windows or tabs but I can't find away to do this with Text editor.

Every time I boot up ubuntu I usually open 3 terminal windows and ssh into the same server. I would like to either click a shortcut, or run a single terminal command that will do the equivalent.
I came across the "gnome-terminal" command, but I was unable to get it to trigger an ssh command.
Ideally I would like to have a script that I pass in the number of windows I want to open and the server I would like to ssh into for each window.

I have recently dual booted an Old Toshiba laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) It was recommended to me by a friend after XP was becoming unstable. To the Problem : I have downloaded Chromium as the web browser as I am not a fan of Firefox, but every time I launch Chromium... It launches into a random work space and not the one I am working in.. So I cannot open multiple Chromium windows.. So to find where it has launched it, I have to click work space switcher and find it.. If I click Maximise, instead of maximizing it to the work space limits... it makes it go over 2 seperate work spaces..
