General :: How To Open Emacs In Its Own Window
Aug 20, 2010I am doing some project work and for that using the server at college with ssh connection. Every time I try to open emacs on the terminal after connecting, it opens emacs in the terminal itself i.e. not its own window. On my laptop on which ubuntu is installed, emacs always opens up in its own window an thats how I am used to it. There are several problems when it opens in the terminal like when I try to use commands such as M-V, actually terminal's view menu opens up, its very frustrating. Also I am pretty sure that the college server runs on red hat and has X installed on it. So what do I need to do to get my emacs window back.

Jul 8, 2011I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.

May 19, 2010I am currently trying to copy a directory of roughly 400GBs to dvd, have gotten myself stuck. I tried to tar and then split; however, I don't have enough room on my hard-drive to make a compressed tar and split it up and then burn to disk, so I need a way to tar the and compress the directory, split it, and burn to disk every 4.3GBs.
I went ahead and installed DAR as an alternative, as I hear it is designed for this type of task, but I can't figure out which way is heads or tails.
my OS is the newest version of ubuntu 10.

Sep 7, 2010I am facing a problem while splitting a text file, I need to split a file into some parts and each split file should have 2000 lines, when I do it through "split" command the mother file is kept intact but as per my requirement I need to cut mother file into some parts thus it should not be kept intact.
Example:
file size
motherfile.txt 5000 lines.
after split
motherfile.txt 2000 lines.
childfile1.txt 2000 lines.
childfile2.txt 1000 lines.

Jul 6, 2010I have the following setup: Client A, having 2 network interfaces, eth0 and eth1, both with the IP address 192.168.1.1/32. Client B, also having 2 network interfaces, eth0 and eth1, with the IP addresses 192.168.1.2. The routing table on client A has one entry: 192.168.1.2 dev eth0 The routing table on client B has one entry: 192.168.1.2 dev eth1. Basically the idea is to send the upload traffic one one interface and the download traffic on the other interface. (Client B could serve as a gateway). However, with this setup, well... nothing works. The packets received by Client B are ignored. Does the linux kernel have anything against routing packets coming from an interface, although he thinks the source is on another interface?

I know how to perform a regular expression replacement in one buffer at a time. But how do you perform a regular expression search and replace across all open buffers? I have found a method to perform a regex search and replace across a directory by marking files but I need to do it in the open buffers.

Aug 8, 2010After finding firefox too slow, i recently shifted full time to chromium. and now i know why it has such a fan following ! its seriously fast, especially as compared to firefox - which at least in my case would appear to have got bogged down because of numerous add-ons etc.
However, there are 2 things that disturb the basic functional of chromium.
- Whenever i click on the browser icon, the window that opens up is never in "maximized" size. so every time i need to double click on the title border to maximize the window. is there some way in which the browser window will open in maximized mode the first time i click the icon ?
- Firefox wouid readily open pdf files within the browser window itself. however, chromium asks me to first save the file at some location, and then only can i open it !

OpenSUSE :: Emacs Window Doesn't Properly Snap To Other Windows
Jul 19, 2010with 11.2 and now with 11.3 (using KDE4) i got two issues with emacs:
1) The emacs window doesn't properly snap to other windows. There is mostly a small gap inbetween.
2) When switching between buffers with C-x b the emacs window shrinks vertically from below!

Aug 26, 2010I am using xubuntu and there are a few types of files on website that instead of downloading and saving and then opening with emacs, I would rather when the radio button choice comes up say open with emacs. I am using xubuntu with xfce, and there is no line for a command to be entered as some ubuntu editions have. In the choice of changing the opening program from mousepad to something else, it says search and allows to navigate to find a program, but I cant find emacs anywhere not in etc/ or elsewhere. So where is its executable to direct the program chooser to?

Apr 23, 2010I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).

Aug 8, 2011My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.
