Ubuntu :: OCing FSB Not Recognized By Numerous Programs
Jul 16, 2011
I boosted the FSB of my CPU by 10%, the system is very stable. But CPU-G & the task-bar applets in Ubuntu don't recognize it. They show the current MHz as the standard freq, not the freq +10% (ie 3520 vs 3200).
It isn't a big problem, just curious why and if there is a fix. The only program I can find that works is CPU-Z in Windows 7.

I'm curious; for a current project a server has 4 network interfaces (eth0 and eth2 are in a bonded pair using the bonding module, and then eth1 is being used for management, while eth3 is currently unused but may be utilized for iscsi in the future).
We need to configure two different hostnames, one for the bonded pair (bond0) and one for eth1. Now I have been googling around to try and figure out how the heck this is done but I can't find much of anything. In some methods it mentions using the hostname command, however this isn't persistant after reboot.
Another mentions just editing the /etc/hosts file but I thought that was only used locally? Both bond0 and eth1 will be on separate VLANs with different DNS servers, so it needs to end up with two different FQDN's

I have 2 Hard Disks in my computer both of them show in File & Folders, and they are both formated by Ububtu, I use the 2nd one for my Data storage as it's the larger of the two. The problem I have is that certain programs just don't see it! For example Album Shaper sees the boot drive but not the 2nd one which has all my photo's on it. OpenOffice is not a problem it sees both drives. But there are a few programs that just don't see it.

I'm getting numerous Gnome errors after logging in... Previously everything was working fine; perhaps a software update messed things up? I have looked around for potential solutions, but none that I have tried have made any difference. The errors I get are: The panel encountered a problem while loading:
[code].....
how I can fix this? This is Ubuntu 9.10 PowrePC installed on a PowerBook G4 -- I'd really love to be able to see the battery level remaining (and seeing the time would be nice, too ).

I have ran the regular apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade and it pulls in newer versions of the liquorix kernel pretty often. Now whenever I boot up my system, I notice that there are now about three different 2.6.36.dmz liquorix kernels installed (I can't remember the exact numberings on that).
How can I remove all versions of the liquorix kernel except for the latest?

I just preupgraded from Fedora 14 to 15 on my Toshiba NB205 netbook (the preupgrade went smoothly by the way).
Immediately upon logging in, I discovered catastrophically poor quality of font rendering in every terminal window program I tried, (and I checked plenty like LilyTerm, Sakura, gnome-terminal, etc) and in web-browsers.
The symptoms are the same for all applications: the glyphs are very thin, anorectic, and very ugly.
The described behavior is desktop independent: same in Gnome (3 and the fallback mode), fluxbox, Openbox.

I have a large number of scanned JPG images that I would like to convert into a single PDF file -- each image will be on its own page, and I want the pages to be in a certain order. What is the command for ImageMagick to take a batch of JPGs and convert them to PDF, and order the pages in a certain way.
(by the way: I am working on writing a Gentoo ebuild for convert2pdf at the moment, but until I get that worked out, I'd like to figure out how to do this using Imagemagick, which is already in the portage tree, and already installed)

I recently tried Fedora on my laptop (previously Debian; I was bored one day) and gnome-disk-utility (palimpsest) warned me that my hard drive had numerous bad sectors. I re-installed Debian to find that this software was installed before so why had it not warned me?
When I load the disk utility, it says SMART is not available. I've got smartmontools installed, I can run a self-test with smartctl but I don't think this shows bad sectors. I've tried starting smartd on startup but the disk utility never changes from "SMART is not available". It is possible for it to work with this hardware as it works in Fedora on this laptop; any ideas?

I'm trying to get wireless working in F10. Using pci wireless card with Atheros chipset. To be sure, I tested this hardware with a PCLinuxOS Live CD. Connects to AP perfectly.
Hardware drivers seem all OK in F10, and ifconfig shows wlan0 as expected. When I use the Wireless-Assistant 0.5.7 there's no connection.
Actually, the AP logs show numerous connections and disconnections.
Preferring CLI, I'm using a drop-dead simple wpa_supplicant.conf as follows :
Should Ipost some debugging output from wpa_supplicant -Dwext -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -iwlan0 -d

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04. The drive was formatted when I installed so it's 100% Ubuntu. The only major problem I have encountered is that Ubuntu will not recognize my SD cards. I really need to access these cards, all my film footage is on there. I think the internal SD card reader (If such a thing exists) would have been deleted during the installation process. I am a greenthumb to Ubuntu and have never used it before so I am rather stuck...

I have a backup HDD with a different distro for my laptop and i can boot into it via external usb or if swapped into the laptop. This HDD/install in question is debian testing and was working fine, the issue arose suddenly. I was first suspecting a failure of hardware somewhere on the motherboard, but the hdd i was using with an external usb adapter also works when installed into the machine. also, the HDD is recognized once i have booted using the external HDD and distro, but it is not recognized by the bios. so i dunno, my first guess is something became corrupt within the testing install, but i guess its also possible that there is some wrong with the HDD but thats not immediately apparent as all the data is still accessible.
Should also note that the HDD with testing on it is also recognized when connected via the external usb adapter, while booted from alternative distro/HDD.
Also. just tried this, but i can get the testing HDD/disto to boot if connected externally. it was going pretty quick, but there i did catch a line about a corrupt filesystem. any commands to run to see what might be going on?? log files to look at?

This is the error in the config.log file:
I have installed the libgd package using apt-get install libgd2-xpm-dev and I also tried recompiling using libgd2-noxpm-dev package but I still get the same error.

I'm using Ubuntu with GNOME and alt+tab for switching windows does not work for me. I checked the system prefs & the keyboard shortcut was correct set.
I even tried changing the key to something else (that doesn't contain alt). It didn't work either. It appears as if the manager didn't recognize the shortcut & the key strokes were passed through to the current application. Rebooting didn't help either. Note that I can do alt+f5, alt+space. alt+f2 didn't work though.

About two weeks ago I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. The upgrade went fine, everything works wonderfull, except maybe for Wine but am still figuring that out.
What I find a bit strange is that on the boot-up screen (where I get the choice between the different OS's on my two hard-drives) I still see Karmic listed on the partition where I upgraded (see attachment: on /dev/sda1).
When I boot-up, I first get this message: Mounting: mounting none on /dev failed: no such device
This stays about 20 seconds on screen after which Lucid starts up and gives me the log-in screen.

I'm running Lubuntu 10.04 on a Thinkpad T41. I had been running for a week before realizing that my USB devices (card reader and thumb drive) were not being recognized. I thought that the issue might be related to my aging Thinkpad but I installed the hard driveat is running Slackware and I had no issues with USB devices. I reinserted the hard drive with Lubuntu and was unable to recognize any USB devices.Has anyone else noticed this issue? If so, is there a fix for this issue?

I have tagged my mp3 collection using Rhytmbox. The problem is that my mp3 player is a Windows based and does not recognize these ID tags. Also, when I examine files in Windows, I see only empty spaces. When I did tagging in Windows, mp3 player recognized them without any problems. Any recommendation for some SW to ID tag my mp3s that would also be recognized by Windows/my mp3 player?

I was trying to help my dad upgrade the RAM in his Toshiba laptop running Ubuntu 10.10. I checked on several websites to verify that I had got the proper RAM to upgrade from his 2x512MB to 2x1GB (his machine is old, max RAM is 2GB).I swapped the RAM out and rebooted, as I've done many times on other machines, and nothing happened-- the HD light was lit, but nothing else, no bios messages, nothing, just a black screen.
I thought maybe I had bad RAM so I swapped in another set that I had, and this time it tried to boot, but when Ubuntu loaded it died with messages saying that it could not find/mount the hard drive.I was able to put the original RAM back in and it worked fine. I'm pretty puzzled by this-- how could the RAM affect the HD? Is this a sign of needing to upgrade the BIOS or something?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04.03 on an ASUS P5VD2-X. There are numerous HDD attached, but one is uniquely Win XP, the other uniquely Ubuntu. Boot choice is via a GRUB loader. Ubuntu is the first choice normally. The problem is that more often than not, the system does not seem to be able to recognise the CD or DVD reader/writer. On some random occasions, they are recognised, but mostly not. But - and here is the upsetting bit - this problem never occurs when I boot up on Win XP. The CD/DVD devices are instantly and reliably recognised each and every time. So I guess that rules out a hardware or BIOS problem. This is a particularly annoying problem as use of the optical drives is required frequently, and it galls me having to revert to Windows just to use them.
