Ubuntu :: HDD Not Recognized After RAM Upgrade

Jul 26, 2011

I was trying to help my dad upgrade the RAM in his Toshiba laptop running Ubuntu 10.10. I checked on several websites to verify that I had got the proper RAM to upgrade from his 2x512MB to 2x1GB (his machine is old, max RAM is 2GB).I swapped the RAM out and rebooted, as I've done many times on other machines, and nothing happened-- the HD light was lit, but nothing else, no bios messages, nothing, just a black screen.

I thought maybe I had bad RAM so I swapped in another set that I had, and this time it tried to boot, but when Ubuntu loaded it died with messages saying that it could not find/mount the hard drive.I was able to put the original RAM back in and it worked fine. I'm pretty puzzled by this-- how could the RAM affect the HD? Is this a sign of needing to upgrade the BIOS or something?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04 - Graphics Not Recognized?

May 1, 2011

I recently upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04

I have a Dell GX260 with on board intel graphics chip 845G - believe

This seemed to work fine in 10.10 and indeed from version 9.04

After the upgrade to 11.04 I can only run in basic graphics mode -

I have been to the grub menu and taken the recovery option and attempted to reset the graphics mode - it says it cant detect the graphics card or input devices

I have also been to a root shell via grub and tried the command 'X -configure'

this seems to end abnormally but does produce a xorg.conf file - this file makes the graphics unstable with menu bars and such have overflows and lockups -

Slackware :: Partition No More Recognized After Upgrade To 13.1?

Jun 5, 2010

One partition of my pata drives is not recognized anymore after upgrade. Using fdisk the partition is seen but just 33,8 GB of the 205 GB drive is recognized at all.

Quote:

root@7of9:~ >>> /sbin/fdisk -l /dev/sdd
Disk /dev/sdd: 33.8 GB, 33820286976 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4111 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

The filesystem is ok. Booting Slackware 12.2 the partition is recognized and mountable. why /dev/sdd4 is not recognized by Slackware 13.1?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Password Not Recognized After Meerkat Upgrade?

Oct 16, 2010

I have an Asus K60 laptop with the Athlon chipset. I had wireless working just fine under Lucid. But after upgrading to Meerkat, I can't get my password to be recognized. The router connection is seen without any difficulty, but the WPA password is rejected every time. I've rechecked it, of course, and also checked that it works in the Windows partition on the same machine. I'm using wicd and madwifi, recompiled for the -35 kernel. Here's the relevant output of lspci:Quote:

Debian Installation :: Mouse Not Recognized After Lenny To Squeeze Upgrade

Feb 17, 2011

my mouse wouldn't work in any fashion after going through most of the install process from Debian Lenny to Squeeze (couldn't click, move the mouse, etc. under both Compiz and Metacity). My system is a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 laptop; I keep the touchpad disabled, but the button mouse (TrackPoint) wouldn't work either. I was following the instructions here:

[URL]

So, the first thing I did was run the following commands, as it says to do:

# apt-get upgrade
# apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686
# apt-get install udev

Then, I rebooted my machine into the new kernel (2.6.32-5-686). I got a ton of udev warning messages at startup (all along the lines of "SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to match a parent device, in something-or-other" - details can be provided if needed), but got a functioning prompt. I logged in, ran startx, and everything worked except the mouse, which couldn't do anything - as if it wasn't recognized at all. Switching window managers from Compiz to Metacity, as mentioned before, didn't help. "modprobe psmouse" revealed that that module was correctly loaded.

Rebooting into my old backported kernel (2.6.32-bpo.3-686) restored mouse function, although I still had the udev warning messages (so maybe those aren't relevant, I don't know). Apparently, something about the different kernels is causing the problem, but I'm not sure what - any thoughts? I haven't wanted to complete the upgrade with "apt-get dist-upgrade" without knowing that I'll have a working mouse, since I need a functional GUI at the moment and don't have a good way of fixing it if I trash it.

Slackware :: Eth0 No Longer Recognized After Upgrade And ASUS Mobo Replace In -current

Jan 27, 2010

My office has a box which is, by necessity, dual-boot WinXP/Slack. The Slackware I'm running there is -current, all great and fine. Until now... It turned out that my mobo, an ASUS P5KPL-CM, died after a power surge. Since the XP needs software activation, we replaced it for an exact copy of the mobo. After the change the box worked fine in XP, and I was able to connect to the network via the Ethernet interface. BTW, the Slackware version is Slackware-current, updated as of the Jan 9 update (after that I was no longer able to connect to the Net with Slack). However, in Slackware there was a problem: eth0 was no longer recognized. Using /sbin/ifconfig only listed the lo (loopback) interface. The lspci output is:

Code:

01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev b0)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. P5KPL-CM Motherboard

Debian Hardware :: HDD Not Recognized In BIOS But Recognized Upon Boot

Sep 18, 2014

I have a backup HDD with a different distro for my laptop and i can boot into it via external usb or if swapped into the laptop. This HDD/install in question is debian testing and was working fine, the issue arose suddenly. I was first suspecting a failure of hardware somewhere on the motherboard, but the hdd i was using with an external usb adapter also works when installed into the machine. also, the HDD is recognized once i have booted using the external HDD and distro, but it is not recognized by the bios. so i dunno, my first guess is something became corrupt within the testing install, but i guess its also possible that there is some wrong with the HDD but thats not immediately apparent as all the data is still accessible.

Should also note that the HDD with testing on it is also recognized when connected via the external usb adapter, while booted from alternative distro/HDD.

Also. just tried this, but i can get the testing HDD/disto to boot if connected externally. it was going pretty quick, but there i did catch a line about a corrupt filesystem. any commands to run to see what might be going on?? log files to look at?

I even tried changing the key to something else (that doesn't contain alt). It didn't work either. It appears as if the manager didn't recognize the shortcut & the key strokes were passed through to the current application. Rebooting didn't help either. Note that I can do alt+f5, alt+space. alt+f2 didn't work though.

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Lucid Not Recognized ?

May 14, 2010

About two weeks ago I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. The upgrade went fine, everything works wonderfull, except maybe for Wine but am still figuring that out.

What I find a bit strange is that on the boot-up screen (where I get the choice between the different OS's on my two hard-drives) I still see Karmic listed on the partition where I upgraded (see attachment: on /dev/sda1).

When I boot-up, I first get this message: Mounting: mounting none on /dev failed: no such device

This stays about 20 seconds on screen after which Lucid starts up and gives me the log-in screen.

Ubuntu :: 10.04.03 - CD / DVD Drive Not Getting Recognized

Aug 10, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 10.04.03 on an ASUS P5VD2-X. There are numerous HDD attached, but one is uniquely Win XP, the other uniquely Ubuntu. Boot choice is via a GRUB loader. Ubuntu is the first choice normally. The problem is that more often than not, the system does not seem to be able to recognise the CD or DVD reader/writer. On some random occasions, they are recognised, but mostly not. But - and here is the upsetting bit - this problem never occurs when I boot up on Win XP. The CD/DVD devices are instantly and reliably recognised each and every time. So I guess that rules out a hardware or BIOS problem. This is a particularly annoying problem as use of the optical drives is required frequently, and it galls me having to revert to Windows just to use them.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get The Scanner Recognized By Xsane ?

Mar 4, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu 9.10 'in anger' for a couple of weeks now and overall I'm impressed. However, a couple of days ago my old Epson C46 (which had been working fine under Karmic) died, and I had a look for a replacement.

I decided on a Canon MP270 because Canon seemed to have gone to the trouble of providing Linux drivers on their website. I even phoned Canon and they confirmed it should work fine.

Today the AIO arrived and I downloaded the printer and scanner drivers from Canon. I could't get the install.sh files to run - tried ./ sudo and sh etc, no joy. Anyway, I used the package manager to install the .deb files and that seemed to go OK.

The printing side of things works fine but I can't get the scanner recognized by Xsane.......
