CentOS 5 Networking :: Numerous Hostnames On Numerous Interfaces?

Aug 13, 2010

I'm curious; for a current project a server has 4 network interfaces (eth0 and eth2 are in a bonded pair using the bonding module, and then eth1 is being used for management, while eth3 is currently unused but may be utilized for iscsi in the future).

We need to configure two different hostnames, one for the bonded pair (bond0) and one for eth1. Now I have been googling around to try and figure out how the heck this is done but I can't find much of anything. In some methods it mentions using the hostname command, however this isn't persistant after reboot.

Another mentions just editing the /etc/hosts file but I thought that was only used locally? Both bond0 and eth1 will be on separate VLANs with different DNS servers, so it needs to end up with two different FQDN's

Fedora Networking :: Use Wireless-Assistant 0.5.7 There's No Connection - AP Logs Show Numerous Connections And Disconnections

Jun 20, 2009

I'm trying to get wireless working in F10. Using pci wireless card with Atheros chipset. To be sure, I tested this hardware with a PCLinuxOS Live CD. Connects to AP perfectly.

Hardware drivers seem all OK in F10, and ifconfig shows wlan0 as expected. When I use the Wireless-Assistant 0.5.7 there's no connection.

Actually, the AP logs show numerous connections and disconnections.

Preferring CLI, I'm using a drop-dead simple wpa_supplicant.conf as follows :

Should Ipost some debugging output from wpa_supplicant -Dwext -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -iwlan0 -d

Debian :: Numerous Liquorix-kernel's After Update

I have ran the regular apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade and it pulls in newer versions of the liquorix kernel pretty often. Now whenever I boot up my system, I notice that there are now about three different 2.6.36.dmz liquorix kernels installed (I can't remember the exact numberings on that).

How can I remove all versions of the liquorix kernel except for the latest?

Ubuntu :: OCing FSB Not Recognized By Numerous Programs

Jul 16, 2011

I boosted the FSB of my CPU by 10%, the system is very stable. But CPU-G & the task-bar applets in Ubuntu don't recognize it. They show the current MHz as the standard freq, not the freq +10% (ie 3520 vs 3200).

It isn't a big problem, just curious why and if there is a fix. The only program I can find that works is CPU-Z in Windows 7.

Fedora :: Bad Font Rendering Affects Numerous Applications

May 26, 2011

I just preupgraded from Fedora 14 to 15 on my Toshiba NB205 netbook (the preupgrade went smoothly by the way).

Immediately upon logging in, I discovered catastrophically poor quality of font rendering in every terminal window program I tried, (and I checked plenty like LilyTerm, Sakura, gnome-terminal, etc) and in web-browsers.

The symptoms are the same for all applications: the glyphs are very thin, anorectic, and very ugly.

The described behavior is desktop independent: same in Gnome (3 and the fallback mode), fluxbox, Openbox.

General :: Gnome Disk Utility Warned That Hard Drive Had Numerous Bad Sectors / Fix It?

Feb 21, 2010

I recently tried Fedora on my laptop (previously Debian; I was bored one day) and gnome-disk-utility (palimpsest) warned me that my hard drive had numerous bad sectors. I re-installed Debian to find that this software was installed before so why had it not warned me?

When I load the disk utility, it says SMART is not available. I've got smartmontools installed, I can run a self-test with smartctl but I don't think this shows bad sectors. I've tried starting smartd on startup but the disk utility never changes from "SMART is not available". It is possible for it to work with this hardware as it works in Fedora on this laptop; any ideas?

Is this behavior normal ? I think when you shut an interface than you get the interface down message at other end ? And what becomes the status of the bridge if I shutdown one of its interface ?

No steps are repeated, after they are run they delete themselves from rc.local.After each step, it reboots.Step 3 is responsible for creating the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 file, and populating it. It greps ifconfig -a for the mac address of USB0.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Disable IPv6 On Specific Interfaces?

Apr 10, 2011

Now that IPv6 is becoming more and more common, I found the need to disable IPv6 on some interfaces but have it enabled on other. I found that /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/*/disable_ipv6 does exactly that. I am now wondering if anybody knows, why are networking scripts so counterintuitive. /etc/sysconfig/network has an option:

NETWORKING_IPV6=yes

All this option does is disable some ipv6 services (dhcpv6...), it does not disable IPv6 in whole (as one would assume...that's why you had to disable it with module parameters). Searching for more IP6 related config option, one can find that /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* scripts can contain:

IPV6INIT=yes

Again, this option does not disable IPv6 protocol on the interface, it just skips running ifup-ipv6/ifdown-ipv6 scripts. I added a /sbin/ifup-pre-local. Now, this script runs before ethX entries are created (other scripts run when it's already too late) in /proc directory, so it modifies default values which are then used after those entries are created:

#!/bin/bash
#
[ -f "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/$1" ] && . /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/$1

CentOS 5 Networking :: Dosen't Enslave Bonded Interfaces On Boot?

I have a rack of IBM x335s. They are all running 802.1Q over 802.3ad, that is VLAN trunking over two physical Ethernet bonded with LACP. Its been working fine on all of the servers for years.One server recently had its hard drives upgraded and CentOS reinstalled. It is a minimal install. The server has been reconfigured exactly as it was and has been verified and compared against the other working servers.It will not enslave the interfaces on boot. You can manually enslave and then bring up the network, so that much of the configuration is verified. Ubuntu Networking :: Resolving/finding Hostnames Automatically?

Mar 16, 2010

I have a ubuntu server running which acts as a firewall/dhcp router for sharing internet to all computers on the network. On the network i have my stationary computer (win7) and my laptop (macbook).The server has 3 nics installed.ETH2 for internet. ETH1 (192.168.1.2) for windows pc. ETH0 for macbook (192.168.2.2).I can share files no problems over the network. Between windows <-> server, macbook <-> server, windows <-> macbook.The problem i'm experiencing is that i can't seem to find either hostnames between windows and macbook. They connect to each other fine with the right ip addresses, but they can't seem to connect when using computer names.

On both the macbook and windows pc i can see the server and connect to it without using the ip adress.What can i do to make them see each other with their computer names? Is there anything i can install on the server and configure in order for it to work automatically?In osx you have a tab in the finder that says "shared" which shows the computers on the network and only my server pops up.The same in windows, i can only see the server but not the macbook.As said, it works perfectly fine if i use \192.168.2.2 (or smb://192.168.1.2 on the macbook) but i'd rather be able to connect via the computer names.Would also love if they could resolve automatically so when a friend connects to the network i'll see his computer name right from the start, without any re-configuration.

Ubuntu Networking :: Possible To Use Avahi To Resolve Hostnames Across Gateway

Nov 26, 2010

I am wondering if it is possible to use avahi to resolve hostnames across a gateway. With gateway I mean a linux box with ip_forward'ing enabled to pass traffic between interfaces. The gateway connects two networks with all hosts running Ubuntu and specifically avahi-daemon. The gateway is not running avahi and I am not able to install it there. The firewall configuration on the gateway is not blocking any traffic between the networks. I am able to send UDP packets from a host on one network to a host on the other.

When I run tcpdump on a host and try to ping that host.local from a machine on the other network I see no traffic. This means that the gateway is not passing the multicast traffic along. Is there any special setup required on the gateway to allow this?

Networking :: How To Resolve Hostnames On DHCP Home Network?

Jun 28, 2010

(although I'm running Solaris, I've posted here as I expect Solaris/LINUX is irrelevant) - more of a general network Q.I have a PC running Solaris 10 (hostname MARKUNIX) and a laptop running WinXP (hostname MARK-LAPTOP). Both are connected to broadband via a router. IP addresses for each are determined via DHCP (192.168.1.nn) and I do not leave either on, 24x7. I am running Oracle on MARKUNIX and want to be able to refer to it by hostname when using Oracle tools on my laptop.Each machine can ping each other ok by ip address and curiously the Solaris PC can ping MARK-LAPTOP (I'm not sure how it resolves that?) - importantly the laptop cannot ping MARKUNIX.Now I could add MARKUNIX to my laptops hosts file but that would mean changing the file each time I boot up as the ip address for MARKUNIX will keep changing (DHCP).

Is there a way to refer to MARKUNIX without having to keep changing ip addresses and use DHCP? As I understand it the 192.168 address is private and is not really the 'real' ip address and as such can be manipulated(fixed?) even whilst using DHCP?Am I right in thinking that a static ip from my broadband supplier is the ip of my connection (router) and I'll still have the same private network referencing issues?What I've covered above pretty much is the extent of my knowledge of networking so bear that in mind please.
