Ubuntu :: No Nautilus File Dialogue Window In Ooo 3.3?
Jan 29, 2011
I just upgraded from Ooo 2.4 to Ooo 3.3, running it on Hardy. Everything seems to work fine, except for the dialogue window to open / save files.
In the previous version of Ooo I worked with, files were opened and saved by Nautilus. Now Ooo uses a different file manager which I don't like, because I can't jump quickly to my favourite maps and it's harder to navigate through my files. It has to be easy to have Nautilus again opening files, but I just can't find out how.

My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.

Ever since I moved to GNOME3 and every time I mouse right click and select "Properties" in Nautilus, there is no response. In fact it only freezes the browser and I have to force to kill it.

A small thing disturbs me: If I go to the dialog box [open with:] its okay but if I go forward in the dialog box to [other] the dialog window is far to big horizontally and cannot be re-sized. This came up suddenly during a fast mouse click session. As root its OK. I would have liked to add a small image about this but i do not have any web site for this any more.

I don't know if this is a known issue, but when I want to copy/move a file to a folder containing lots of sub-folder displayed as list, I can't do a simple drag&drop, because there is no empty space to move this file. It will always go into one of the sub-folders. So obviously I have to go up one folder or to change view from list to Icon or Compact. Is it a known issue? Is there a solution? (Using GNOME nautilus 2.30.1)

Is it possible to change my current nautilus window to have sudo capabilities,? e.g. to delete locked files. It may be lazy but if it takes a lot of navigation then it would be handy to somehow activate sudo from the open window without the terminal command (gksudo nautilus) which always begins at root.

Is there any way to make the file selector dialogue box in Ubuntu show icons instead of a list or detail view? I have been trying to convince people to use Ubuntu instead of windows, but this seems to be a deal breaker for most of them. When uploading pictures to the web or facebook it is very difficult to navigate pictues in the file browser window with the little bitty thumbnails beside the file name. If there is no way to do this how would I recommend this idea for Ubuntu and to whom would I submit it?

While in a web browser I'm trying to attach a file which resides on a network location. The file dialogue doesn't allow me to browse any network location. I've mounted the volume and added locations to favorites. I've also tried entering an smb:// path. This only happens in browsers, both FFnd Chrome, some examples would be attaching a file in gmail, yousendit, etc. I can browse and work off the network normally in desktop apps.
I'm very new to *nix.

I've been trying out Nautilus-actions (Gnome 2.28.4), but have been unable to import most config files from [url].
When I attempt to import an action, it complains:
Quote:
Can't parse file 'convert_flv_to_avi.schemas' as GConf schema description file!
This XML file is not a valid Nautilus-actions config file (missing keys: )
So far, the only one that has worked for me is "Move to custom folder" [url].

Is there a way to identify and close a given instance of an open nautilus window from a command line?
Or can one identify via a command line that a given instance is open?
I'd like to tag one when it is open with a specific title and then if that is already open not open it again all from the command line.

suppose an Ubuntu or Linux user is using GNOME and he/she has opened too many folders , suddenly he/she has to shutdown/ switch off machine due to power failure or some other unexpected reasons , now when he/she reboots the machine he/she can't remember the folders he/she had opened earlier so there should be a window restore feature for nautilus in Ubuntu or Linux in general
Ubuntu or Linux should implement the same window restore feature in nautilus similar to the one existing in Mozilla firefox

Is there a alternate way to open the Nautilus Preferences Window (http://i.imgur.com/hCffn.gif)? I cannot open it via Edit -> Preferences (the option is not there). I removed Nautilus-Elementary and I think that messed up something.

I have setup a vnc server using the "every imagineable server" thread which setups up VPN using xinetd. I have also installed Beesu and its associated scripts so I can easily open root privileged nautilus windows.
beesu works a treat on the actual display. However whilst vnc'd into the box I get prompted for my root password (which it accepts) but a nautilus window never opens. No errors, it just doesn't open.

Can I change the colour of the window that appears if I use nautilus with gomesu? I want it to differ from the color of a normal nautilus window of (the in GNOME logged in) normal user "tux"? I use the GNOME file browser nautilus sometimes with superuser rights. But I want also to remind me that I am now root and has his power. Can I just ad an argument/option to the command (like "--no-desktop") or do I have to change some settings for root?I doubt the second would work (alone). But if the second has to be and would help: where can I find his window color settings of root?

There's something very annoying about how Nautilus opens "image viewer" windows.
They open, I can see them, but when I press the keyboard, it's still Nautilus which gets the commands.
This is because Nautilus stays the active window!
Most annoyingly, when I want to have a quick look at an image, and then close it, Nautilus closes instead (Alt+F4).
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
How to solve it?

I'm using rhel6. Using File Browser Nautilus 2.28.4 I could easily locate any file I'm interested in by it name. I'd like to use this File Browser to locate the file name based on it content e.g. based on some word in the text file. It doesn't work for me that way ... My question: does Nautilus support the search of file based on it content or only based on the name of the file itself?

I've set up Samba under Ubuntu for windows SMB file sharing (currently unauthenticated but soon to be backed off against A.D.) This is great within Windows where l folders are available as mounted in all applications but from my Ubuntu desktop and Ubuntu laptops, we can only access network folders and files from the File browsers and bookmarks one finds in the "Places" menu. Our issue is that most (but not all) dialogue boxes don't have any options for viewing non-local files and folders. i.e. when I'm in my web browser and I go to upload a file from our local network file server to an internet location, the "Open" dialogue box cannot see any of our local network locations.
