Have recently installed 10.10 x64 on Gigabyte H55M-D2h/Intel i5/4GB/Onboard graphics&sound and have trouble with some text display. When hovering over some apps, the "help" dialogues appear as black on black, and same for some right/left click dialogue boxes.

I've recently installed the program Sparky for processing NMR data. When I start the program the text is unreadable. For example the top left pull-down should be labeled 'File' and instead I only see the two horizontal dashes in the 'F' and the right 2/3 of the 'e'. View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been using Linux for about six years now, and I joined this website hoping to learn more about Linux, keep updated with Linux news, others less experienced than me; I spend so much time on Reddit I rarely remember there's a whole Internet how there and I've yet to really visit this website since I registered. I'm posting this in the newbie section because the problem I'm having feels like it probably has a simple solution, but I don't what to do. If this forum is inappropriate, I suppose a mod could move it?
Anyway, upon highlighting a link in either Firefox 4 nightly or Chromium, I get this pop-up menu: [URL](copy paste and remove the space between the h and the t - and yes, this is a "screenshot" taken with a camera, as this menu seems to inhibit the functioning of the PrintScreen key for some reason) I do not need to click - as soon as a URL is highlighted, the menu pops up, forcing me to click away in order to cancel the menu. At first I assumed it was a Firefox thing - it happens in both 3.6 and 4 Nightly - so I began checking all of my add-ons (only 4) and plugins to see if I have some plugin causing this. Nothing seemed to be.
When I switched to Chromium, I quickly realized the same thing happens in Chromium, as well, so it's independent of what browser I'm using. This leads me to believe it's some package I have installed (apt-get, I'm using Linux Mint on this laptop, and on my other computers, which are running Arch, I do not encounter this in either Chromium or Firefox4) that's causing this, so if someone could just identify what package it is I can remove it. Or maybe my assumption is incorrect and there's something else that leads to this popup, but either way, it's really annoying and I want it gone!
Kubuntu10.10After installing a 6000+ font collection from KDE-Look.org, my computer had assumed a new font, though I restarted and it is now fine, generally speaking. My Firefox still has this crazy font, and it is so weird that it is almost unreadable.

The screen size defaulted to 1680 x 1240 mething like that.This was rather small for me so I went to the task bar and clicked on system.ound the app to change the resolution. I chose 1280 x 720. Now, I no longer have the task bar and the text is nearly unreadable.Without the task bar, I cannot find a way to go back to the original size. I also have not had any success finding any way to make the text look better. I tried changing the font and size but that did not have any beneficial affect. Can anyone tell me what will correct the situation?I found another post that mentioned Alt F2 and gnome-display-properties. That let me get back to nearly what I originally had; everything looks good at 1680 x 1050 but the fonts are not quite the same. However, I still have the need to reduce the resolution of the display and maintain readable text and the task bar.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a strange problem with gvim. I've installed Slackware on 4 computers now, and this latest one is the first I've seen this issue on. I use the command line for almost everything, and only use gvim in Firefox with Vimperator. So it isn't something I use all the time, but when I need it I really need it. Using textboxes (like, you know, on LQ) is starting to drive me up the wall Anyway, when I load gvim (through Vimperatorr other means) the text is unreadable. It does seem to become readable after it gets covered by another window, but as I type, the new text is unreadable again. Attached is a screenshot, of this post. And, actually, I'm seeing similar behaviour in Gimp.Attached is a second screenshot. The weird lines seem to appear and disappear when the mouse rolls over the area. I don't use very many GUI programs, just Firefox for the most part (which isn't displaying this behaviour). So, this could be a general X issue, or perhaps a WM issue.

Basically it looks like the text is 1px in size. I was about to install a graphics driver (nvidia) but doh I can't see what I'm typing... I have a Slackware install with an NVidia graphics card.It was working ok, but now the graphics screen is unreadable and the keyboard stops working (capslock and numlock lights don't operate) when the graphics display is started.Deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf allows me to run "startx" and see the icons, but keyboard input is still lost.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from Ooo 2.4 to Ooo 3.3, running it on Hardy. Everything seems to work fine, except for the dialogue window to open / save files.
In the previous version of Ooo I worked with, files were opened and saved by Nautilus. Now Ooo uses a different file manager which I don't like, because I can't jump quickly to my favourite maps and it's harder to navigate through my files. It has to be easy to have Nautilus again opening files, but I just can't find out how.
I'm blue in the face using chmod and chgrp. Both root and my own username are members of the cdrom group under the administration menus.The dialogue above displays, and then the disk icon appears afterwards, but it's very slow. Anyone have a clue about this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedA small thing disturbs me: If I go to the dialog box [open with:] its okay but if I go forward in the dialog box to [other] the dialog window is far to big horizontally and cannot be re-sized. This came up suddenly during a fast mouse click session. As root its OK. I would have liked to add a small image about this but i do not have any web site for this any more.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've set up Samba under Ubuntu for windows SMB file sharing (currently unauthenticated but soon to be backed off against A.D.) This is great within Windows where l folders are available as mounted in all applications but from my Ubuntu desktop and Ubuntu laptops, we can only access network folders and files from the File browsers and bookmarks one finds in the "Places" menu. Our issue is that most (but not all) dialogue boxes don't have any options for viewing non-local files and folders. i.e. when I'm in my web browser and I go to upload a file from our local network file server to an internet location, the "Open" dialogue box cannot see any of our local network locations.

I have been trying to convince people to use Ubuntu instead of windows, but this seems to be a deal breaker for most of them. When uploading pictures to the web or facebook it is very difficult to navigate pictues in the file browser window with the little bitty thumbnails beside the file name. If there is no way to do this how would I recommend this idea for Ubuntu and to whom would I submit it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhile in a web browser I'm trying to attach a file which resides on a network location. The file dialogue doesn't allow me to browse any network location. I've mounted the volume and added locations to favorites. I've also tried entering an smb:// path. This only happens in browsers, both FFnd Chrome, some examples would be attaching a file in gmail, yousendit, etc. I can browse and work off the network normally in desktop apps.

Ubuntu Karmic 9.10
Video Card: ATI Raedon Mobility 7500 (open source drivers)
Running GNOME up to date version for 9.10, no compiz for now (on laptop)
The main problem is that, after updates, I have been getting popups and notifications that look like the attached... Which is problematic if you want to use popup/notifications such as those popped up.... These include Pidgin notifications, Sound Notifications, and whenever I attempt to open System Monitor, as can be seen from the snapshots.
Not sure if this is where to put this but I have tried googling to find a fix but couldn't find anything.
When I go to Travelocity to search for airfares a popup comes up. It is a small window and often it is for Netflix.
I can't figure out how to not have this popup show up. I have checked the Preferences/Content. I have block pop-up windows checked. I also looked to make sure travelocity is not listed, it isn't.
how to make this pop-up go away?
I go to turn on my laptop this afternoon and it boots up fine, but then I get a 'Save Screenshot" Popup that is using, most likely, 100% of my cpu. So I can't do anything, mouse doesn't move, shortcut keys do nothing, all I can do is a hard shutdown.
