Ubuntu :: New Install And Windows Appear Aond Disappear
Jul 16, 2011
I just installed the latest ubuntu on a stock Dell optiplex gx270 . When the system loads the top bar only shows parts and if I hover the mouse over where something should be it appears then if I click something the window will open then disappear then when I click in the area of the window it appears for a second and disappears again. Cant get it to switch to classic mode.
I just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04.Update worked well. But now the windows do not close properly, but remain as an inactive background display. As a side note, there's no startup screen, but just some screen garbage, as if an incorrect video driver would have been used. When I do move windows, their shade remains in the background, filling the background with garbage.
A google search on this problem (minimised windows disappear) shows a number of simple solutions. None of them work on my system: KK, Kubuntu, 64 bit.
The most often given advice is:" expect your taskbar is missing the "Window List" applet. To add it: Right-click on an empty area of the taskbar, choose "Add to panel", scroll down and add "Window List". "When I click on an empty area of the taskbar I see no option to 'Add to panel' The options are:
Add widgets (meaning unknown to me)Add Panel (which is NOT 'Add to panel'). This option does not appear to have any visible or useful result.
I'm running Kubuntu, updated to 10.04. After working OK, today Windows started disappearing whenever I click to minimize them. They're still running, but I have to go to System Monitor, locate the program in the list and click "Show Window." That's a nuisance.
I think this began after I tried to move panel icons to the right with an adjustable spacer. I've hunted all over the place for some setting to get windows to operate properly. The "Window Behavior" item in System Settings doesn't have anything. I removed the spacer and that didn't do anything, either.
I upgraded to 10.4 netbook remix on my Asus N10 with an Nvidia card. I normally don't use the card and to get rid of troubles don't install the driver. After update something went wrong with the driver and I can't fix it. When the PC finished his boot het ask to give the password for the default key ring as usual but the window disapears before i can change anything. So this one is no too bad as my password is very easy and I can do the job with switching windows and keying very fast the pwd.
But try to read your evolution mail in these circumstances. I tried to start in low graphics mode but didn't help. Finaly I installed a fresh version on a separate partition and asked to copy my Evolution and Firefox documents. He didn't, dn't know why and tryed twice. So far my fresh installation works well but I lost my mails and shortcuts. So.... I think the easiest would be to work from the new installation as on the old one even the terminal window disapears.
Have had 9.10 running for a while with no problems. Not long ago upgraded 1GB RAM to 2GB so I could run VirtualBox better. All worked fine until a few days ago, I ran the normal system update. Since then, all application windows just disappear off screen after a random? period of time.
I.e. I tried to check Software center and the window closed after getting to 5% download. Just tried the System download manager which got about 8 files into an update before logging off desktop and taking me to log in screen. I just tried Firefox and the toolbar icon was displayed while it was attempting to load, but then that disappeared.
i don't know what happened, I was doing the ctrl+alt+fn thing to pan around my desktops, and i think i somehow assigned the mouse to automatically right click on its own whenever i move it or anything. This is really messed up. It's like a virus. Just writing this the right click window has come up about 20 times and there's now a dozen new folders on my desktop. How do I fix this? How do I go into controls and stuff?
I have a problem and I don't understand how it started... When I minimize windows, they disappear beyond my desktop not leaving the button to maximize them again on the lower panel... I have no idea how to get the minimized windows to be stored on the lower panel...
When I minimize windows they completely disappear. Doesn't matter if its a program or my home folder, anything I open disappears when its minimized.I can run the system monitor and check running processes and they are still running. I just cant see them. All I can do is kill them with the system monitor.I can log on as another user and they work fine. It's just in one account. Is there a way to fix this, or to completely reset my desktop to the default settings? I know it's something I did but I can't find out where to fix it.
Morning, just installed lubuntu but having problems connecting to the wireless network. I find the network alright, however, the network authentication windows pops-up only to disappear 0.1 seconds later not giving me time to enter the network-code.
I am using GNOME Ubuntu 64 bit Lucid Lynx with Cairo Dock, Compiz Fusion, Screenlets
Sometimes when I start up linux the buttons to close, maximize, and minimize windows and the Application title bar disappear. Restarting usually fixes the problem.
Do you have any ideas why this would happen? Is there a command that will restart gnome without having to restart the computer?
I installed a fresh new Jessie (8.1) with the Cinnamon environment a few days a go, and yesterday I started seeing a strange issue seemingly happening at random.
I'm not sure what I do to cause this, but every few hours all the text and some of the icons (launcher, notifications and some applications) on the panel disappear. Most icons in the menu also vanish.
I've just noticed that some windows also disappear, but instead of showing the window behind them, I see my background image (see attached image).
I can't interact with windows which I can't see, but I can move and resize them (they have no border to grab, but alt+middle mouse works).
I can get around the issue by restarting Cinnamon (Alt+F2, r), but that works only part of the time.
Dmesg shows nothing (most recent message was plugging in my mouse & keyboard).
I'm running this on a Lenovo X201 (which uses Intel HD graphics QM57) and an external monitor (dual monitor configuration)...
So I've been testing Gnome Do and I now want to activate docky. To do that I have to activate the desktop effects, so I installed drivers for my graphics card which work fine. But I have an infamous issue with my compiz which causes all title bars of windows to disappear. Is there a solution in which I can activate docky and still have my title bars?
I recently download the new 11.3 suse. I Install from the cd, and choose the update option to make it all auto-.Now I Found out that I have no Mozilla repository, Packman repository, OpenOffice one, as well as others. Then I go the repositories packages screen that repositories aren't displayed. Where can I found them ?What's new on this website that take those repositories apart ?
Background: I'm a 20+ year Mac user, switched four years ago to Linux.I have NO experience with Windows to speak of. Whenever I've gotten a new box, it's either been home-built or a Mac.Now I have a new Acer Aspire AS7551 laptop, and although I have not yet booted into Windows, it comes with a Windows 7 Home Premium license. I've been running it with Ubuntu 10.04 off a flash drive and everything works perfectly.
What I want to do: I want to wipe the disk, install Lucid, and run Windows in Virtualbox (for the sole purpose of watching some Netflix and learning a little bit about Windows 7). For the purpose of this question, please accept that I DO NOT want to dual boot. The problem: From what I can find, I can't use the "recovery discs" that came with my laptop to create a virtual machine. This is confusing, because it seems like I paid for a legitimate Windows license for use with this laptop.
Questions:
1. Would MS exchange my recovery discs for a regular install disc to go with my license code if I explained this to them?
2. If not, is there a source for Windows ISOs that I can safely use with my license? (I am aware that the legitimacy of that approach is questionable, but I am quite comfortable with the ethics since I paid for Windows 7, own the license, and only want to use it on the same computer.
3.If not,is there any way in heck I can use my recovery disc to create something Virtualbox can work with?
4. If not, how are all of you people getting your Windows virtual machines going??
(I have read that Acer is a major hassle to get a refund from for the "Windows tax" so I might as well be able to use it--this is MS' chance to win over a fan if only they will let me!)
I just installed Ubuntu Server 9.10, and don't have sysvconfig, if I apt-get install sysvconfig, it tells me that sysvconfig has no installation candidate.
Was sysvconfig removed from Ubuntu 9.10? If so, what alternative can I use? If not, how do I install it?
Quite often, at start after I shut down my latptop, my taskbar is completely empty and inactive. I can't right-click on it and add anything. The rest is working fine: shortcuts work, terminal works, software works through terminal, sticky notes are opened
So if I have a program open and running.. doesnt matter what it is.. and I minimise it,the program still runs but I can't get back to it unless I go to the application menu and open it again. I use to be able to just reopen the window from the task bar but its not there any more and I have no idea why.
I cannot view several items to include... Update Manager, Software Center, Synaptic Package Manager. When any of these are selected, they flash on the screen and disappear. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10
My Desktop icons disappear, and the only thing that i think off is conky. since it started after it installed it.Running Ubuntu 10.04This is my conky file
Code: # UBUNTU-CONKY # A comprehensive conky script, configured for use on
For quite a few Ubuntu versions now, if I ever wanted to save a ..... clip, I just went to the file system's /tmp folder and did a cut'n'paste of the buffered file. Now I have upgraded to 10.04 it seems .flv's are no longer buffered in /tmp.
Where have they gone? Or is this function/ability 'no longer available' for some obscure and possibly political reason? I do get the feeling that, whatever the reason, this is a retrograde step not in keeping with the Ubuntu philosophy.
I have one problem when i run application they dissepear Example : when i try to upload something when i press browse they minimize and dissepear ... also with other application when i press run or something like that they dissepear.
Is it just me or does Eclipse disappear when it is minimized. I only installed Ubuntu today so maybe I'm just missing something lol. I was just doing a bit of coding and now I can't find it after minimizing it
On the live cd on my other computer when i try to install a program on the live cd the operating system freezes up and the app bars disappear. Is it like that when you have ubuntu installed or no?
I recently have Decided to Try Ubuntu, So i choose the Windows Installer Method. I am Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on a 1 TB Drive with a 250GB and 500GB Secondarys. I have more than enough power to run the System this is a Custom Built $1700 Gaming Rig.So i downloaded the Installer and choose the 500GB Drive which is not the Windows Drive for Ubuntu to install to. The installer went through Successfully no issues i did the Reboot as Prompted and Choose the Ubuntu from the Duel Boot Screen but when it loads it can not find any Build information. What did i do wrong?Could it be that i need to have it attached to the same drive as my Windows operating System or am i not doing something correctly? I followed all the directions from the Installer Information on the Download Site
Today I had this weird new icon appeared on my Cairo dock (The grey rectangular box sitting in the middle).Right click on it, choose whatever action, it just won't disappear
Does anyone else have this issue? Sometimes, one of my bookmarks (Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos) will randomly disappear from the list in Nautilus, and it seems to also affect the Places menu and Thunar as well. The directories are obviously still there, but the bookmarks randomly disappear!
