In my toshiba m900 with realtek wireless lan. i canot detect any network. should i see any network? i setup my access point using wpa2 in windows. how about the ubuntu 10.04? i mean do they support wpa2 and wireless issues?
View 9 RepliesIn setting up wireless connections I have ran into an array of problems. First, when I installed the new OS on my laptop I had to get the correct drivers and firmware for it to display and connect to any connections, had no problem here connecting to a secure wireless network (WPA or WPA2). I then installed Ubuntu on my desktop and had to find the correct driver for the Netgear WNDA3100v2 USB adapter, got it all installed with the Windows Wireless Drivers tool or w/e it is. This made all the available connections come up. I tried connecting with the WPA password I was given for the network and will not connect.
I had the guy managing the network change the one I connect to, to a WEP Passphrase Shared Key thinking this would solve my issue, still nothing. And also in doing so, now my laptop will not connect to the wireless network using the Passphrase. I do not want to go back to Windows, and I will be getting rid of my Lan connection soon so i need a solution to fix this wireless connection problem.
I keep getting a "bad password" error message when trying to connect via wpa_supplicant to a wireless network (Apple Time Capsule WPA/WPA2 mixed).

So perhaps the password is somehow getting lost in translation from Ubuntu to the Time Capsule?
I've been having a network problem that I've been able to temporarily solve by rebooting the router, but even that can be shaky at times, and it can sometimes disturb others' internet activites, so I'd really like to tackle this while I can. I had an old thread about this, but it's ancient history by now, and plus which, I've got a bit more Linux experience and patience than I did before.
The basic problem is that NetworkManager will associate and connect to my home wireless network, but a) it won't let me ping the router or anywhere else ("Destination Host Unreachable"), and b) the connection lasts for maybe a couple minutes at most. If I reset the router, however, 9 times out of 10 it will associate and connect successfully and I can get online, but I have to run a constant ping to the router with a 10-second interval, otherwise it drops the connection, unless I'm doing a lot of other heavy network activity.

The last prompt line is included because I cancelled it myself; it didn't abort on its own. If left unmonitored, it basically keeps doing this over and over, with no visible network activity at all.
With NetworkManager, I can keep selecting the network's ESSID over and over, and it seems to reconnect, but I still can't ping out anywhere. I'm using a Netgear WN111v1 wireless adapter with ndiswrapper and the Windows drivers. I have no idea what the chipset is, and I doubt that Linux drivers exist for it, even if I knew what it was. The router is using WPA2 security (hence my trying wpa_supplicant)

I only include this for format checking purposes. The commented out "psk" is the actual text passphrase, while the uncommented one is (presumably) a hex representation of the same key. Is this correct? I've never done this with wpa_supplicant before, I've only used NetworkManager (which is a pain in the @$$ because it requires X to run, and so it disconnects any time I log out/back in ).
Is there any hope of getting my wireless connection permanently working, so that I don't have to reset the router every time I need to reboot or log out/back in?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell M6400, using Wubi for Windows 7 x64. My ISP sets my router password at source, meaning I'm unable to disable wireless encryption (which is WPA 2 Personal). That being said, I don't seem to be able to detect *any* wireless networks (I can still connect via ethernet, which does not require the password).
I'm not certain where the problem is, so I'll outline my steps and what the results were:
Under "System > Administration > Hardware Drivers" I have the "Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver" installed (for BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, and BCM4322- based hardware)

I just got a new AZiO AWU212N 802.11n wireless usb adapter (linked below). One of the product reviews said that it works with Ubuntu if you upgrade to the .34 kernel so I thought it would be a good buy. I updated my kernel and Ubuntu detects that there is a wireless adapter, but doesn't detect any networks. My old wireless-g adapter can connect just fine, so I don't know what the problem is.

I recently installed Fedora on an old computer of mine that I pulled out of storage, and I can not get it to detect my wireless network. Previously it was running Windows XP and I was able to get it to connect, but now that I'm on Fedora it doesn't even detect my network. I tried lspci and lsusb but I didn't find anything under network, only Ethernet showing my linksys. I know I must have a wireless chipset, but nothing will show.
I also attempted to yum install ndiswrapper because another thread with a similar problem suggested this, and when it prompted me for my password it wouldn't let me type. How would I go about fixing this?

My networkmanager understands that the card is installed. But it can not find any network. Also iwlist scan gives me no result. I did not have this problem on earlier fedora releases. Recently I upgraded to F12 from F11. I should mention that I have another USB DLink wireless card and when I plug it, everything works fine with that card. I also tested wl_apsta driver using fw-cutter. I did not work neither.

So is there anything wrong with that "Encryption key: off" statement? I suspect that encryption key only applies to WEP, but not to WPA2 encryption, but I am not sure. So my question is, can I ignore that statement and assume that my encryption is fine?
Besides, where does knemo read the information about encryption from? As I mentioned, knemo detects that the encryption is active. Are there any other commands to make sure that my encryption is safe and well?
After updating to 10.04, I was able to connect easily to my network. However after getting a new router "Linksys WRT610Nv2", I was initially able to set up my wireless "WPA & WPA2 Personal"-encrypted network, but for whatever reason it stopped working completely.
My Asus EeePC 1000H does recognize my network, but its does not want to connect anymore, whatever I try. If I use no encryption, or go wired, everything works well. If I go on other networks everything is ok. I even reinstalled Passwords and Encryption Keys. Other computers (Windows-bad XP and Vista, laptop and desktop [sorry, but working on it to get rid of them!]) have no problems, either wired or wireless connecting with my network. Booting under 9.10, everything works ok as well. In Ubuntu 10.04, going into Network Connections and Edit my network, this is what I see:

The university I go to uses a WPA2 wireless network that requires a netID and password to connect too. I installed wicd but I can't seem to connect to this network, is there a way to add this functionality to wicd, and if so, how do I do that (links to a how-to or guide would be nice, I've yet to find one).
Also, I spend most of my time on campus in the command line, so I'd like to know if there is a way to use command line utilities to connect to this network (again, a guide or how-to would be nice)
I can get online through my fedora live USB just fine (w/ network manager) but I'd rather get on directly from slackware.
Well I recentelly read some tutorials about "cracking" wep networks, and seems like it's kind of easy ( I Haven't tried'em out since I don't have my laptop right now, but i'll try them as soon as i get it back )So i'd like to change my network protocol to wpa2, but I REALLY GOT NO IDEA on how to do this.Does someone knows about a tutorial on how to do this?

Since I configured the Airport to use "WPA2 Personal" Authentication, my connection is flaky: it drops for no apparent reason and sometimes I can't connect at all. When authentication is turned off, the connection is rock solid.

I wanted to run a little media server in my house, shared with my laptop only, so I could free up space on my laptop drive. I took one of my Linux boxes out of my render farm and loaded up a minimal install, command line only of Ubuntu Lucid from the mini ISO (32 bit). I had to plug in a lan cable to install, but I wanted to move my box back out to the "farm" that doesn't have wired access to my intranet.
After much research, trial and error, this is what worked for me. My wireless card uses an Atheros AR5001X+ chip, and it works with the desktop cd out of the box. I found the "just works" desktop install uses the ath5k driver that is now included in Lucid, but I'm not using a desktop or window manager. I haven't tried this on server version, if you do, let others know what you had to install to get it to work.
The things I do tell you about, I instruct you as if you are a newbie, however I have left out some things that users should know or be able to lookup easily, like if you want a static address instead of using dhcp. You may not need all of the steps or you may have to do more research and troubleshooting.

My college runs a WPA2 LEAP secured wireless network, and I am having problems connecting to it under Ubuntu. I can connect to it just fine under Windows, just not under Ubuntu. Under Ubuntu I can connect to other networks such as my home WEP secured wireless network, so it shouldn't be a hardware or driver issue.
When I do connect to the WPA2 LEAP network it recognizes the network and tries to connect, it pops up the login box for me to enter my username and password, but after I click connect it pops back up again about 10 seconds later. It pops up like this about 3 times total, then after the third time it stops trying to connect and the Wireless Network Disconnected message is shown.
I've recently installed Lucid Lynx 10.04 on my Dell Studio which uses an internal BCM4315 wi-fi card to connect to the internet. I was hoping it would work upon the install, but deep down I knew I'd have to tweak it a little bit to get it up and running the way I wanted. The card was instantly recognized but, at first, wasn't detecting wireless networks. This was quickly and painlessly fixed using System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, which I used to install Broadcom B43 wireless driver (b43-fwcutter). I rebooted and could not detect the local wireless networks.
I entered my password to my home network (correctly, I quadruple checked) but, unfortunately, it continuously tries to connect to the network with no successful. Occasionally I'm prompted to re-entered the password and the process repeats. The network I'm trying to connect to is a WPA/WPA2 network which I've heard to be troublesome. I haven't yet tried connecting to a WEP network but I'm fairly certain it will work and I will get back to this post when I test it in a few hours.
I'm curious if this question has been answered or if the problem has been solved and I just simply don't have the google skills to find it.

Im trying to connect to my wireless network via terminal. My wifi network has a WPA2 encription. Im running ubuntu server 10.04. wifi interfaces are active, i can "see" my network with airodump. The only thing is i dont really know how to configure my iwconfig to connect to it.

SO I click Connect to Hidden Wireless Network, and this window pops up. I put in my network name, the security type, and password. It acts like it is connecting, the wireless icon is going up and down. But then another window pops up, saying Authentication required by wireless network and the down arrow is grayed out. I am using the Fedora 13 Live USB on my Gateway MT6451 laptop. All the major things you want to work on a laptop with linux actually work! Even my Broadcom wireless card! But even though I can see wireless networks and connect to ones that are open with no problem, I can't actually connect to my Hidden WPA2 network. I put all the information in and it connects, shows a good signal, but doesn't acquire the correct IP. I have a 192.168.X.X address range on my network, but it shows a 10.X.X.X ip and no Gateway address.
If I can get this one thing working I will definitely be installing Fedora.
O currently have 2 USB WiFi adaptors: a Linksys WUSB54G v4 and a D-Link DWA-110. Both these USB adaptors worked extremely well in Windows: they could connect to any network: unsecured, WEP and WPA1/2I have tested these adaptors in DreamLinux, OpenSUSE and Mandriva: in these 3 distributions, i could use both adaptors to connect to my home's WPA2 network.Both adaptors also work well in Fedora 10.In Fedora 11 Alpha though, its a different thing: only the D-Link is able to connect to the home WPA2 network. My Linksys WUSB54Gv4 can 'see' the network, but when i enter in the WPA2 key, it takes forever to try to negotiate a connection before timing out and disconnecting.

I enter my WPA key, then it tries to connect, but the WPA key screen appears again saying that I may have typed in my WPA key incorrectly. However, I checked and it is the right WPA key.

how I can get the network manager to automatically detect wireless networks in range, this whole process has become very frustrating.
Ubuntu in Windows 7 (64 bits) File system installed using Wubi I got Ubuntu 10.04 LTS intalled using Wubi. That means Ubuntu resides inside Windows file / folder system. It also means Ubuntu does not have its own partition. Here is what I found out:
1) It cannot detect wireless network unlike Win 7 on this same laptop. However, when I plug in ethernet cable, it was able to detect it. Is there a fix this problem?
2) I cannot see Windows folders. How do access windows folder from Ubuntu side and vice versa?
3) I forgot to set the disk space for Ubuntu during install and I think the default is 17 GB.Would this cause me problems? If so, what do I need to do? How do I expand the disk space for Ubuntu?
I recently downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 into my Windows Vista laptop & I have downloaded the one that can run alongside my current system, so I'm running dual OS. At the start up screen where I choose the OS, I choose Ubuntu & it loads fine. Everything looks perfect except that it won't connect to or detect any wireless connections. I have tried clicking the Network Manager icon & clicking New Connection. I typed in the SSID & security key for my wireless connection/router & after I hit create, a small window pops up saying "Wireless Disconnected: you are now working offline" or something like that. Nothing happens/changes. There is no internet connection on Ubuntu OS. But when I switch over to my Vista OS, the internet works perfectly (obviously.)
