Fedora Networking :: 8 Freezes When Wireless Connects?
May 26, 2009
I am using Fedora 8 on my laptop, newly installed, I can see the network card(Linksys WPc54G v2) and Network Manager sees the wireless router, however as soon as I tell it to connect my computer freezes and I have to restart. I searched for solutions but all I found was Ubuntu problems.
Actually it seems that the trigger is when the keyring comes up and asks for a password. As soon as I start typing the pass it locks.

I've got a Zotac MAG HD-ND01 with XBMC live installed. This is built on Karmic Koala and runs very nicely through the wired NIC.
I configure the box using a cable. I'm using WPA2-PSK and it is clearly authenticating OK.. It gets an IP address.. the AP shows a connection to the box. My XP laptop connects to the access point OK.. just can't connect to the box via the wireless, and it can't see the network using wireless.
I have followed a number of threads on connecting Atheros 9XXX wireless [URL] but no joy.
Also, can Ubuntu connect to the AP at any speed greater than 54MB? My windows PC connects at 144MB+ . Will ndiswrappers connect at those sorts of speeds?

My wireless connection always worked. When I log in, I already have internet access.I went on holiday and connected to several other networks. Now the laptop will not connect anymore. Sometimes after 5-10 minutes. When I forse to connect ("Connect to hidden wireless network), the laptop connects after several seconds. But not automatically. My wireless modem uses WPA2, MAC filtering and has a hidden access point.I use Ubuntu 10.4 on a HP Probook laptop. In "Network connections", under "Wireless", the "Connect Automaticly" and "Available to all users" are selected. When connected, the signal strenght is very good.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ42-195TX laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit) installed on it and fully updated. It has a Realtek RTL8191SE wireless chipset which I am having trouble with - its wired connection is working perfectly. After starting up, I am able to see and connect to wireless networks. Once connected, the wireless functions correctly for a very brief period (under 10 seconds) in which I am able to access the Internet and so forth. The connection then stops working - although it doesn't get disconnected. When I say it "stops working", I mean I can no longer access the Internet and trying to ping the router gives me a "Destination Host Unreachable" error. If I disconnect from the network I cannot reconnect, nor can I connect to any other network.- though I can still see the list of available networks.
I thought that maybe this was a 64-bit issue, but I tried the Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit live CD and experienced the same problem. Please note that while this thread is about the RTL8191SE chipset, the RTL819xSE chipsets all use the same driver.Below are the results of various commands while connected to the network but after the connection has stopped functioning correctly:lspci -nn | grep "Realtek"

I've recently installed release 11.04 and am trying to get wireless networking operational. I'm using a netgear wg111t usb wireless adapter. I've installed ndiswrapper and have got the netgear windows drivers installed ok. My problem is when I try to connect wirelessly I get a system crash, think it tends to be called a kernel panic in linux. The network connection is confirmed and about 5-10 seconds later the crash happens. I've updated the linux kernel to 2.6.39-0-generic but thats not helped.
I can connect with a cable but that is somewhat limiting.

The computer connects wirelessly to a router. The router is connected to the internet and that is working well. (If i use a cable connection to the router, I can reach the internet).
Why wont the wireless connection reach the Internet? It is a strong connection. It worked before wirelessly. I am on 10.04 beta, with the recent updates installed.

First- clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04, with default network manager installed, I had a taskbar icon, and it could see the available wireless networks, could not connect to them, even the ones with no security. Purged all network manager files suggested in various threads here, Installed wicd- it could see all available networks, could connect to unsecured networks, but not to my own secured network. Password was correct in the wicd/configurations file. Removed wicd, and reinstalled network manager from synaptic. I have to network manager applet. When I try to add it to the notification area with alt-f2, applet-nm, I get a brief flash of something in the notification area, but no applet.
System=>Preferences=>network connections shows no wireless connections, but I'm obviously connected to something (probably my neighbors unsecured network) since I"m reaching this webpage. I tried to run sudo wpa_cli from the terminal to see what network the computer is connected to, and it gives me this error:
Quote:
Could not connect to wpa_supplicant - re-trying
wpa supplicant is installed according to synaptic
Various troubleshooting output:

I got a little problem with network manager. I got two connections in it, with two different DNS-Servers, because the one of my provider is very slow I surf with opendns, but sometimes that slows down too, so I want to change if necessary. Both connections got the same fixed IP.That worked all fine, until I got my new router (it's a Netgear WGU 624). It's connected by cable and I configured it like the old one. But for some reason instead of connecting to the manually configured connections, my fedora 10 creates a new one "auto eth 0" with a dynamic IP. So every time I boot or switch on from standby my PC connects with this one and I have to manually set it to the right connection. There's no chance to edit or delete it cause those two buttons are grey and won't work. I also tried restarting network manager manually and I also tried starting it with su as root.

I recently swapped out my old network switch (10/100) for a Netgear GS105 gigabit switch. With the exception of my Fedora 10 laptop all the rest successfully connect at gigabit speeds. But my laptop (with an Intel Corporation 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)) will only connect at 100Mbps. If I look in the logs for my network card here is what I get:
e1000e: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - 0.3.3.3-k6

What I can try to bring it up to gigabit speeds?

I know Windows forward and backward but I am so new to linux it's just wrong. I just installed fedora (like 1hr ago) on and old toshiba laptop with a WiFi PC card. Everything seems to work fine except. My Networks connects to my home Wifi network but it will not connect to internet. When it connects the IP address isn't even close to being in the same range as my other laptops and PCs. Like I said I'm new to linux but I'm wanting to learn. Any fixes for this issue? Which linus book is the best one to read for a beginner? Other then not connecting to internet I have no complaints.

I set up a tower with 11.04 desktop as a minecraft server and I would like to be able to access it from work for whatever reason.I set up RPD and checked all the necessary check boxes, opened ports (to the best of my knowledge), installed tightvnc on the remote computer and gave it a go. SUCCESS... almost. It connected and brought up the desktop as desired, however the image seems "frozen". By "frozen" I mean that I am still able to click around and do things on the server, but I just can't see what I'm doing because the remote client isn't "refreshing". It just looks like nothings happening. Example: I move the cursor to the menu bar and click on Applications. It looks like nothing happens however if I walk over to my server, the Applications menu has been clicked and has extended.
If I log out of the remote client and then reconnect I will see this on the remote box, but nothing after that.I hope this is making sense. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I have tried this on two separate computers, one that is on the same network as the server (with both local IP and external IP) and the other is at work. Both do the same thing.

Unlike a lot of others, I have had no problems getting the wireless on my Dell Studio 1558 working with the STA driver. As long, as I am not on battery, that is. Within minutes of switching to battery and disconnecting from the LAN, my system freezes: I cannot move the mouse, the keyboard is useless (I can't even Ctrl-Alt to a terminal) and my only option is a hard boot.I currently have the 2.6.35-23 kernel and I have tried the following driver options for the wireless (all the below were tried with 2.6.35-22):
- the Broadcom STA driver in the repos- the latest STA dirver from Broadcom- the new broadcom driver, not yet available in ubuntu repos (brcm80211)- ndiswrapper ( I can only get win 7 drivers for my laptop, so this does not even enable the driver)My Wifi card uses the BCM43224 chipset. After a freeze, I have pored over the logs and I cannot find any obvious error messages preceding the event - so I am a little at wit's end ito resolving this. Can anybody give me any clues as to where I should start looking to resolve this issue?

Since I upgraded to Lucid, I am dealing with serious instabilities related to my wireless card. What happens is that when there is a lot of wireless activity the computer freezes. It is a complete freeze, the mouse stops moving, if something was coming out of the speakers it keeps echoing, and the only solution is to turn off the computer. The bug seems to coincide with the one listed in here
[URL]
My wireless card is Intersil ISL3890/ISL3886. My whole computer is an HP z555. I'm thinking that is should be a bug in the wireless adapter driver, which is p54pci. The only solution I can think of is to blacklist it and set up ndiswrapper. I am not very comfortable with this solution since a native linux driver should be better than ndiswrapper.

I've got an atheros ar9287 based card with the ath9k driver from the base install of lucid and I installed a compat wireless patch via this thread: [URL]... to fix the issue of the card being stuck on a given channel when using aircrack. Now, my system freezes up after about a minute or two. If I leave the wireless card off, everything runs fine no problem. I uninstalled the compat wireless driver via the readme just make uninstall in the compat-wireless folder, but I still get the freezes. So I assume it has something to do with the patches. I have no idea how to remove the patches. Can anyone help me with this or is there a way to get everything up and running so the original problem of being stuck on a channel is fixed?

I've never encountered this and I'm not sure how to trouble shoot it. The router is working just fine. The problem is with my Crux setup.
I have no internet and no GUI installed yet.

Searched around the forums but no love, tried compat-wireless but it started crying about dependencies. Modprobed it too..

In openSuse I can connect to a wireless network. It says that it is connected, and I can open the router page (http://192.168.1.1/basic.html). But I cannot load any other pages. Nothing else recognizes internet either; I tried using konqueror, YAST and wget with the command line, and none of them could load anything. It is not a router problem or a wireless card problem because both Ubuntu and Kubuntu can connect, from the same computer. I know this is odd because in the only other thread I could find with this issue, it was a different distro and installing openSuse seemed to fix it.

I've been using a Netgear WG311v3 wireless card to connect to the internet successfully since 8.10. However, since 10.04 I've had some serious issues with this card (at least...I think it's the card). I updated to Meerkat hoping that the problem might fix itself, but it's still there. Here's the situation: The problem most often occurs when I'm running Transmission, but also Firefox. It also happens when streaming videos to my xbox via uShare...basically, any time I'm using the internet.
Suddenly, my download in Transmission will drop to 0.0 KiB/s or in Firefox, pages will stop loading. If I close and try to reopen Firefox, it tells me the process is already running. If I try to restart, it says firefox-bin is still running. I click reboot anyway, and the computer hangs indefinitely at the purple Ubuntu shutdown screen. The terminal also freezes if I try to run any commands that are wireless related, for example iwconfig or ifconfig. I have to close the terminal to kill the process.
I've also had more serious crashes when running Transmission where absolutely everything freezes and a hard reset is my only way out. Forgive my n00bishness and let me know what other information I can provide you with.

When my router switches off... the wifi signals go off... then why the hell ubuntu keeps on connecting to that very wifi like hell and when doesnt connect shows the prompt to manually connect... with the wifi key already filled in... whats the use of saving the key when it has to ask the question from me either to connect or not?? and if its isnt available... just wait when its available.. and for the prompt,i have only option to cancel(because wifi isnt available at that moment if i select connect it again tries to connect like hell..which it cant) and if i cancel it wont auto-connect when wifi does get available! what the heck?
Windows has this done the right way... when the wifi isnt available.. it dissconnects silently.. and when it becomes available connects silently.. why isnt this been done this way in ubuntu??
Ive attached an image..one can see in the image that it says "authentication required by wireless network" when there isnt any.. as router has gone down!
And the second thing i want to report is that there is no way to report this bug from ubuntu... the launchpad.net talks of going through bug reporting process which is done against a definite package... now how does a user know which package would be causing this error?? there should be a more clear process of reporting such bugs to ubuntu team... which a common man using ubuntu( ubuntu says its most user friendly of all distros right?) can report..

Another issue I'm having, considerably more serious, is my ability to connect to wifi access points with proxies. The story goes, my school has free wifi, but you have to go through their proxies to access the internet (like at McDonald's or Starbucks, where you must 'log in' and accept their usage terms). I can connect, including DHCP, and when I type in any URI I get the redirect posted to Chromium's address bar, but I simply cannot connect to it. This has happened in Ubuntu and Arch, using at least a couple different network management methods (I usually use WICD but I think I started off with networkd). The strange thing (to me) is that my Android phone works just fine, so although I'm not completely familiar with Android on this level, I don't imagine it's the fault of Linux itself. but I'll only be able to experiment with this once a week, on Saturdays (when I have class --gotta do something entertaining).
