I am using an UBUNTU machine as a server to share folders. Is there anyway to manage the access in a way that few computers will have access to some folder end other computers will have access to other folders?

I'm making a clever backupsystem based on nfs and rsync.Basically, I export folders from the clients to a backup server, and the backup server processes them and makes backups.The backupserver mounts the folders during startup, but if a client restarts, then I guess it would unmount from my backupserver, right?What can I do to make it automount the folder whenever the client gets back up again?All the clients are static servers without much interferance, without any risk of external people tampering with them and without internet access. Security is not an issue, and any kind of shady compromisingcripts will do.However, installing software on them is tricky as I have to download packet for packet and transfer them via usb manually.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine.In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.
When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder.Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?
I want to share certain files/folders with other computers in the network. Now I know how to do this in two ways: using the GUI and modifying the smb.conf file, but the GUI may not be available (e.g. connecting to the server using SSH) and the smb.conf file takes a little bit of time to modify (and from what I have noticed by using the GUI, the smf.conf file does not get modified). Is there a way to share files/folders using only the CLI and without the need of modifying files?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had folder sharing under Samba working for several past versions of Ubuntu. I recently upgraded to 10.04 and my old shares are still working, but any new folders I attempt to share I cannot get to work, despite attempting multiple workarounds.
The Windows 7 error I get is:"Windows can't find "\MYSERVERshared_folder". The name might be misspelled."
I have been looking in the forums but I found no solution for my problem.I already configured Samba and I am sharing folders, printers, etc. (Samba, authentification mode = user, guest account = nobody, share the folder give access to them, enable the permission to access, write, etc.) and seems to be working well.I am trying to connect a Windows to my shared folder in Ubuntu. The only problem is that Samba rejects it and doesn't ask for the password. It just drop the users (from Windows and Ubuntu systems) that try to access to my folders.So when it do in a Terminal sudo smbpasswd -a USERNAMEand I type no password, then it works they everybody can access to those shared but when I type any password then it comes back to the same problem that Samba never asks for passwords and rejects the users.
So the solution would be just give no password to share the files, but the other problem is that every time I restart the user session (restarting the computer, logging out, etc.) it just comes back to the same problem that Samba drops the users and doesn't ask for the password. Seems that every time I restart the system just forgets that I set no password.Another thing is that when I set authentication mode = shareThen nothing works. No password, no access just is possible to see it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.10 since 2-3 weeks. First I tried live CD and the OS seems to be very good. So i installed it on my laptop.So far i had no problems until I tried to access the shared network folders of my Server running on MS Windows Vista and another trial PC running WindowsXP. I'm trying to solve this since 2-3 days, I haven't found a solution.1st of all my network works fine. All computers can ping each other and as the laptop had Windows XP installed the server was accessable.1st I installed the SMB4k tool with this program. I could see the computer names, but as soon as I select a Windows computer the tool searches and nothing happens.
I tried a lot of different variations of this command but in the end I receive this kind of error. I also tried to add -o user=username pass=password, nothing changed.After this I searched information about this error, some forum threads I googled are telling the SMB4K tool modifies the /etc/sudoers file and cause this error. So i tried to change it back with some kind of sudo chmod 0640 etc/sudoers but this won't work it seems I can not modify or edit thisw file using sudo.With the pyNeighbourhood tool I could only see my Laptop but not the Windows PCs.At the end I will install Linux systems on all of my PCs, but only if all my tests will pass .
I configured Samba so that this laptop running Maverick would show up on the network so I could share files between the two. When I view the network on the laptop the windows shares show up, and I can access them; but when I view the network on Windows is when the problems start.
I view the network in Windows and this laptop shows up, but every time I try to open the Public folder (only folder shared) it won't let me in. I get some sort of Windows error message about being unable to access the folder and how I might not have permission to access it, and then at the very bottom it says something like 'file path not found'.
I tried to change the permissions in the properties for my public folder but I every time I tried to change the settings in the access box it would reset it back to blank (-) immediately after I changed it.
I'm not sure what the issue could be. Prior to purchasing this new laptop I was running Karmic on my old laptop and the networking between the two machines worked flawlessly. I'm hoping someone on the forum can help me with this problem.

The problem is that in windows I can not enter to notebook or by network interface or by ip address. and viceversa.There is another option for sharing files, or what I do?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.
I want to share my internet connection with my netbook which has a Win 7 starter OS. This is what I did: in Network Connections I set the IPv4 Setting of my network card to shared with other computers, plugged in the network cable into both machines, and now they both see a connection. This is where i am at i am using my own network to learn who to use nmap properly. I ping my whole network with nmap -sS -O. Then i used nmblookup -a which gave me the infromation i needed. Then i run smbclient -L computername -I ip address -N

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop right now. I have an external western digital terabyte drive plugged into it. I am able to see it and view it fine. Let's work with my music folder for example. I want to be able to access this music from my Windows 7 laptop so that I may add it to my itunes. However, when I enter the \servershare from the windows 7 laptop it says that the "server" is found but the "share" seems to be invalid. I've checked this 20 times and setting the share name to "music". I've rebooted 2 times on each computer yet to no avail. If I make a share on the Ubuntu desktop I can access it from the laptop. So it seems like it just gets lost when looking inside the external. This was just working last week, then I had to blow away they win 7 lappy and now it just won't work!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to share folders between my laptop and desktop. The desktop runs Ubuntu 10 ,and the laptop I'm dual-booting between pclinux OS and another OS. I can't see either machine from either machine. The desktop shows a "windows network" when I go to the network location in file manager. When I run PC Linux, I can't even see the desktop which runs Linux as well, and I've tried to configure shares in the PC Linux OS Control Center, but I obviously failed. I installed gshare on the Ubuntu machine, and PC Linux has GUI tools(whew!) to configure NFS, SMB, and Deb-whatever the other one's name is. As a new convert, I've went into properties,permissions, because it's what I'm familiar with. I just wish someone would tell me if I should maybe just go back to the other OS or not, as I've had so many problems every since trying the switch. I really like this system, but it seems as if you need to be some kind of computer programmer or something to be able to do the most basic things (install software,wireless,share files). I'm not a stupid person, and what I lack in knowledge, I compensate for in desire to learn.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having issues mounting a share on a Windows 2008 Server from all of our Redhat 4 machines. I am trying to back up files before wiping and upgrading them to 5. I will try and post as much information that I gathered after trying different things. I am a newer hire for this network and a Linux newbie.
The scenario is this:
1. Windows 2008 Active Directory.
2. Redhat Enterprise 4 machines
I have root access and I tried entering at the terminal:
" smbclient -L "servername" -U "username"
get the "password" prompt I enter my password and get:
"session setup failed: NT_STATUS_ACCOUNT_LOCKED_OUT."
I check event viewer on the 2008 box and last week was seeing:
Event ID: 4625
Keywords: Audit Failure
etc, etc
"Account for which Logon failed:
Security ID: NULL SID
Account name: anonymous
Account Domain:MYGROUP
Failure Information:
Failure Reason: Uknown user name or bad password
etc, etc
Now the last couple of days the audit failures have not shown up on the 2008 Server box even though I attempted to log in.
The end users used to just use Konquerer smb://"servername"/"share" and it worked but for some reason starting last week this no longer works. Nothing was changed that I know of, this network is in a sealed classified environment with no external access. All additions to the network are monitored and no unapproved software is installed. The lab is in a vault type environment and only a few people know the combination and alarm pass codes so no chance of somebody adding stuff without me knowing it.
I would think with the locked out message it was an issue with my user account but that works fine on the Windows side so I tried my Linux credentials with no success when trying to mount the directory.
Is there something anybody can suggest Linux or Windows side to check? No user accounts work connecting to the Windows share.
p.s. I am aware the above command is only to see the Windows shares but i get the same thing when I just try and mount using CIFS or SMBFS.

I can not not search or connect to a share on the Vista machine from the Linux machine.It seems like there is something that has changed on the Vista machine.
I have Linux installed on one machine with samba running and a second machine running XP. They are going through my router and I am using the same username/passwords for both machines and I have even gone to the point of allowing access to everyone for the share I created and the worgroup in samba is MSHOME just like my XP machine. When I view (or search) my workgroup computers my Linux machine shows up and so do the shares I created but when I try to open them I just get a message that permission is denied and I may not have permission to use this resource. I even tried setting access to the shared folder to 777 but still I can't open this share. Has anyone got any idea of why this is?
