I am trying to see share files on my windows machine to my linux machine. I would like an answer to how to fix the problem. This is where i am at i am using my own network to learn who to use nmap properly. I ping my whole network with nmap -sS -O. Then i used nmblookup -a which gave me the infromation i needed. Then i run smbclient -L computername -I ip address -N
This will not show me the windows os this only show me my laptop. What can i change for this to show me the other computer on this network. The port i am wanting is open. I have 30 systems in a LAN . My users need to login as domain user from their XP clients and store their files in the Linux server. They should not be allowed to store in local machine and also should be granted a particular size of space in server.

I am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine.In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.
When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder.Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?
I'm running kernel release 2.6.26-2-686 on a i686 and are trying to share files between my machine and some Windows 95/98 machines. When I enter smb://ip_number/share_name in Nautilus, it works. I can browse the files. When I try the same with smbclient or smbmount, it complains.
smbclient -I=ip_number -L=//server/share gives cli_rpc_pipe_open: cli_nt_create failed on pipe srvsvc to machine tf_calibration. Error was ERRSRV - ERRerror (Non-specific error code.)
I need a command-line method of copying files from a Linux box to a Windows machine that is in a domain and requires authentication. I cannot install additional software or services on the Windows XP machine. I can install any software on the Linux machine. I've tried scp, but the connection failed and if my understanding is correct it is because scp requires that the target (windows machine) be running an ssh service. Is there a command-line linux utility that can pass Windows domain user and password and then copy a file from the linux machine to a share on the windows machine?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having issues mounting a share on a Windows 2008 Server from all of our Redhat 4 machines. I am trying to back up files before wiping and upgrading them to 5. I will try and post as much information that I gathered after trying different things. I am a newer hire for this network and a Linux newbie.
The scenario is this:
1. Windows 2008 Active Directory.
2. Redhat Enterprise 4 machines
I have root access and I tried entering at the terminal:
" smbclient -L "servername" -U "username"
get the "password" prompt I enter my password and get:
"session setup failed: NT_STATUS_ACCOUNT_LOCKED_OUT."
I check event viewer on the 2008 box and last week was seeing:
Event ID: 4625
Keywords: Audit Failure
etc, etc
"Account for which Logon failed:
Security ID: NULL SID
Account name: anonymous
Account Domain:MYGROUP
Failure Information:
Failure Reason: Uknown user name or bad password
etc, etc
Now the last couple of days the audit failures have not shown up on the 2008 Server box even though I attempted to log in.
The end users used to just use Konquerer smb://"servername"/"share" and it worked but for some reason starting last week this no longer works. Nothing was changed that I know of, this network is in a sealed classified environment with no external access. All additions to the network are monitored and no unapproved software is installed. The lab is in a vault type environment and only a few people know the combination and alarm pass codes so no chance of somebody adding stuff without me knowing it.
I would think with the locked out message it was an issue with my user account but that works fine on the Windows side so I tried my Linux credentials with no success when trying to mount the directory.
Is there something anybody can suggest Linux or Windows side to check? No user accounts work connecting to the Windows share.
p.s. I am aware the above command is only to see the Windows shares but i get the same thing when I just try and mount using CIFS or SMBFS.
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop right now. I have an external western digital terabyte drive plugged into it. I am able to see it and view it fine. Let's work with my music folder for example. I want to be able to access this music from my Windows 7 laptop so that I may add it to my itunes. However, when I enter the \servershare from the windows 7 laptop it says that the "server" is found but the "share" seems to be invalid. I've checked this 20 times and setting the share name to "music". I've rebooted 2 times on each computer yet to no avail. If I make a share on the Ubuntu desktop I can access it from the laptop. So it seems like it just gets lost when looking inside the external. This was just working last week, then I had to blow away they win 7 lappy and now it just won't work!

They are going through my router and I am using the same username/passwords for both machines and I have even gone to the point of allowing access to everyone for the share I created and the worgroup in samba is MSHOME just like my XP machine. When I view (or search) my workgroup computers my Linux machine shows up and so do the shares I created but when I try to open them I just get a message that permission is denied and I may not have permission to use this resource. I even tried setting access to the shared folder to 777 but still I can't open this share. Has anyone got any idea of why this is?

I'm making a clever backupsystem based on nfs and rsync.Basically, I export folders from the clients to a backup server, and the backup server processes them and makes backups.The backupserver mounts the folders during startup, but if a client restarts, then I guess it would unmount from my backupserver, right?What can I do to make it automount the folder whenever the client gets back up again?All the clients are static servers without much interferance, without any risk of external people tampering with them and without internet access. Security is not an issue, and any kind of shady compromisingcripts will do.However, installing software on them is tricky as I have to download packet for packet and transfer them via usb manually.
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently, I've again been trying to get file sharing working on my home network. I made some progress last night, getting so far as having all the shares on my Windows XP desktop visible to a netbook running Ubuntu 10.04 & connected wirelessly. But I ran into some snags.
Here's what I'm working with:
-a desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate
-a desktop which dual boots Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and Windows XP Pro SP3
-a netbook which dual boots Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu 10.04.
Everything connects wired except the netbook, which connects wirelessly. The router assigns each a specific internal IP address, so in effect all have static internal IP addresses, tied to the MAC addresses of their network adapters.
I have Samba Server Configuration Tool installed on both the desktop (Ubuntu 9.10) and netbook (Ubuntu 10.04). Versions are 1.2.63 in both Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04.
Here's as far as I got last night:
-Shares on the Windows XP machine were accessible from both the Windows 7 machine and Ubuntu 10.04 on the netbook, with no password required.
-I configured Samba on both machines to be part of the same workgroup (named PENGUIN) as the Windows 7 machine and the desktop when it's running Windows XP.
-I set up a share in Samba on the netbook while running Ubuntu 10.04. The share is visible on the network from the Windows 7 machine, but I couldn't access it. I was asked for a username and login. I had no idea which one to use, but no combination I tried worked. Windows kept saying it couldn't find a "path" to the share.
-In the Nautilus "network" item on the netbook, I can see the shares on my Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. But I can't access them. Again, I get asked for a username and password, and I have no idea what to enter, or where the username and password can be set.
-I set up a share on the Windows 7 machine, allowing read-only access to everyone. But it doesn't show up on either of the Ubuntu machines, at all, in the "Penguin" workgroup. So I'm not sure how to proceed.
Do I need to explicitly configure the IPv4 settings on each machine to a static internal IP? As I stated, each machine gets a predictable address assigned by the router, so in effect the machines do have static IP addresses. However, I'm not sure that's all the same to Samba.
I cannot access figure out how to access files stored on a windows share within an application. I can access files on a windows share from places>network but if I am trying to access files from say audacitcy or gtkpod by means of file>open when the application brings up the "places" dialog there is no network Icon to choose from.
View 7 Replies View RelatedHere I am editing /etc/samba/smb.conf and trying to remember what I should chmod the directory and the files to, then I think to myself there's probably an easier way. That way should be clear to the user.
There's dropbox and Ubuntu one but these are something slightly different, these sorts of things involving a cloud service or something needing to download to Windows clients, which is not what we want if we don't have an internet connection. So, is there a better way? Something to aide making smb.conf and permissions perhaps?
I'm trying to make my music directory, located on my Ubuntu box, available to all the windows clients (Windows 7, to be specific) located around the apartment. It seems to work fine, I can see and read from the shares from my windows box, but deleting files doesn't work, I just get a permission denied.I've tried being as lenient as I can in the smb.conf, as well as setting 777 on the affected files, nothing changes. I've read, from my various googling, that the octal file permissions aren't as important as the samba permissions. Okay fine, but how do I tell samba to ignore permissions and let everyone delete files? I've read that samba works with samba users, but again, I don't care about users, I just want a global share that anyone can connect to and read (and delete) files.

I am trying to both access files shared by Windows machines on my network, and I also want to share files on my Fedora 15 box. In Nautilus, if I choose the 'Browse Network' option on the left toolbar, I am shown a Windows Network icon. If I try to double click this, I am given an "Unable to mount location" error. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it? Further, where is the GNOME 3 option to right click and choose to share a folder? Both KDE 4.5/4.6 and older versions of GNOME (at least on Ubuntu) had this. Is there a way to share files this way, and if not, is there some workaround?

With the file browser, I can browse to file system/mnt/win and then the files and folders of the Windows share come up fine and I can open them. When I use the file browser to browse to network, the server hosting this share is listed. Then I browse to that server and it lists no shares (nothing at all). I can't go any further than the server. Is there a separate authentication necessary for the file browser to see this share from the network place?

the share via the following /etc/fstab entry .... after doing a sudo mount -a ... I can view the files on the 'C-share' but can not write them back to the server

This used to work and allow share files to be read and writable before some ubuntu updates.
I am currently running ubuntu 9.10.
PS: if I connect via places->network ... the files are readable and writable ... but I need this setup to be automatic with a mount for someone else.

I am trying to share files between my Win 7 machine and Linux. I already did all the stuff needed with Samba. My problem is that when I try to connect Linux to Win7 it asks for a password. I put in my account name and password for Win7 but it keeps saying its wrong. disabled password protection on Win7 still didnt work. Then I disabled Homegroup... Still didnt work.
