Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up A Localhost-only Squid Server
Jul 16, 2011
I'm going to be going off to college in the fall and the internet probably won't be blazing fast like it is at home, so I was wanting to set my desktop up so that it would act as a local cache of the parts of the internet i frequent the most, but I can't find anything like that. All the tutorials I've found are either for sharing the load on a server or for setting up a separate machine as the squid.
Am having trouble setting up a localhost DaviCal server. I've followed the directions here: [url]
And everything seems to be working, but when I go to: [url]
I get the "Not Found" page. How do I tweak this to use it locally from my computer? Have searched and tried to follow various tutorials, but no luck.
What I'm trying to do is setup a CalDav server locally on my computer so I can interface Thunderbird with it. The reason being then I can sync my Android phone with the CalDav server on my computer, thus syncing my Thunderbird calendar with it. Android is great, but currently the only ways to sync your calendar is to go through google's servers (not interested) or use the new CalDav sync software from the market... which is what I'm trying to do.
i am trying to use a local DNS service (unbound), and for that, i want each connection (eth0, wlan0) to first use localhost as DNS (127.0.0.1) and then try the DNSs it gets from the DHCP. this is a laptop so it is not just setting it for a single connection but a system default.
i looked and searched and there does not seem to be a straightforward way of doing it. i am usign gnome with networkmanager, and setting the method as "get IP only" is not suitable, as it omits the DHCP-provided DNSs, and also cannot be set as the default method.
I have a need to set up the program TNG - The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding and run it on a local server (not on the Internet) for the purpose of learning the system prior to developing it on an actual website. I was told to use http://localhost on my browser (Mozilla Firefox). I get a message saying "That Works!", but it goes on to say that the contents of the web server have not yet been entered. The instructions for the downloaded files (which I unzipped) said to copy to the web root folder (the folder where the web server is located ?, I guess). But I don't know where it is or how to go about it. Can someone help? I already have MySQL and PHP, which are required to run this program, and I also have Apache installed on my Kubuntu 9.10 system.
How to set download limit using SQUID? I want to specify the download limit for a particular list in MB. Is it possible to limit bandwith for some group of machines in network?

i must make this work with the use of virtual pc's. I have vm player and installed fedora ( the latest version ) and one xp . So i have 2 virtual pc's. I'm making it simple for start so i can add more pc's when i see that it is working. I have setup a dhcp server at the fedora virtual pc. The fedora virtual pc is like a soho router. The xp pc is getting ip from dhcp while the fedora one has a static one.
My pc is behind an adsl router. Both virtual pc's can see each other which means i have no connectivity issues.Im trying to setup a squid proxy ( transparent one ) so for example the xp pc can access porn sites and such. I used all required configuration for the squid to work and started the service. Ive also inserted with iptables the commands to forward all incoming port 80 packets to port 3128 ( the squid ). It doesnt seems to be working and i thik i know why but i dont know how to fix it.
Because the xp has a gateway at 192.168.1.1 ( the adsl router ) packets go directly to it and not to the soho router ( fedora virtual pc as i intend to do) What can i do to solve this problem ? How can i forward all packets to go to the fedora virtual pc first and then the fedora pc to forward them (if necessary) to the adsl router? PS. I used Bridged connection on the networking configutration on the vmware player ! If you also want i can post the code for squid or iptables if needed !
I have a laptop with Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc, and I'm able to work on web programming on my local server while at home, connected to my network. But I would like to be able to work on the local websites when I'm not connected to any networks, both for demonstrating a site, or simply working on it.
I was surprised to find that I could not connect to localhost at all without a network connection. I tried my normal Google for a solution, but, of course, that was futile without a network.
Now, I'm at home, and of course, it works because I have wireless. I don't really want to disconnect that to figure it out, so I thought maybe some nice soul here might know how to do this. Surely it can't be hard, can it? But, it's certainly not obvious.
I'm trying to set up a basic smtp server on my local computer that I can send basic, unencrypted email through on port 25. I installed postfix, and I chose the following options:
Internet Site, System Mail Name: localhost Root and postmaster mail recipient: I left this blank For other domains to accept mail, I entered : NONE, localhost No force synchronous mail updates Local networks: 127.0.0.0/8
To configure webmail in linux5, Ive followed below procedures:
-Squirrelmail-1.4.2.tar.gz and unzipped under the folder /var/www/html -cd squirrelmail-1.4.2 -cd config -within this directory, ./conf.pl -From main menu, I did choose 2 for domain (i.e. arafapparels.com). This is my official domain -Then save and exit -For IMAP setting, I did choose D -Selected uw and save, then exit -Then from command line, I wrote chown R apache.apache /var/www/html/data (I created folder data in the above path) -I created a folder named as attach to keep attachment in /var/www/html i.e. /var/www/html/attach -Then typed grep R apache /var/www/html/attach -Then typed chmod 730 /var/www/html/mail/attach (Here squirrelmail-1.4.2 directory has been moved to mail directory) -Then from web browser/Internet explorer, I typed http://localhost/mail/ -Here Username & Password appears. Previously I have created username. -But when put Username & Password, below error message displays
Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost 13: Permission denied But I gave permission by chmod 777 /var/www/html/mail and by using 555 but no result.
My squid server works fine in fedora 11 system . Is there any web like interface for admins to create, change, modify users of squid and to view their logs.
I would like to ask some help and tutorial for setting up and how to configure squid proxy server in my (Home PC Server). I am a newbie in Linux Centos. I already installed in my system the CentOS 5.5 . Now, I want to configure it as my internet server, all of my 4 system running in Windows including the laptop I want to connect through my CentOS pc with username authentication. I assign all IP address by static. see tthe attachement in my set up. [url] I just want to know what I need to change and add in my squid config file. And how can I configure properly my CentOS with 2 LAN card as internet server.
how-to configure squid proxy server. I still haven't been able to find a solution. I want to set up squid as a open http proxy server. So people from other networks can connect through the proxy without having to login.Do I have to use iptables to reroute http traffic to squids proxy port? I have forwarded the port in my ISP modem so I know thats working, its the squid config that has flaws or iptables locally.
I have an Ubuntu Server 10.10 machine running in-between my firewall and the rest of my network that monitors the internet connection and functions as a web cache.
It had been working for about a year, but started having an issue where no one (either from the server itself or from the local network) could connect to a website. Port 80 was the only one affected, which is forwarded via iptables to port 3128 for Squid.
After lots of trial and error, I thought to do a packet capture from the internet-side of the server (which I should've done in the first place!). Turns out the tcp handshake is not completed. The connection is started with a syn packet; the web server (google.com for example) responds with a SYN/ACK, and then nothing else is sent until the squid server tries again with another SYN packet. It repeats several times like that, then gives up and gives a connection timeout error message.
My iptables rules are as follows:
I'm no guru when it comes to iptables, and when I originally setup the server, I knew even less. So if something is wrong or at least could be done better with the rules please tell me. Also, I should note that I'm using bridge-utils to bridge the two ethernet interfaces. Squid is set as an intercepting (transparent) proxy.
I have 10 systems on my network and I have centos5.5 installed on server. All other clients are on WinXP. I am using squid server to share internet on my network.Problem is: whenever an user trying to open a website through squid server, it opens too slow, but if same user tries to open same website by passing squid server, it opens 3 times faster. Downloading speed is same in both scenario. Only buffering speed is slow through squid.
I have to configure squid server which will have two internet connections on two separate lan cards and both will run simultaneously.I know how to configure squid server with one internet connection
We have two offices suppose A and B. At office A, we use centos 5.3 computer as router and squid proxy server. At office B we use a cisco router to connect to Internet. Computers at office A that has direct access to Internet can access computers behind cisco router at office B using vnc viewer. But computers at office A that can use internet only through squid proxy can't access computers behind cisco router at office B. Is there any way so that I could allow squid clients to access computer behind cisco router at office B using vnc viewer.
Using Iptables I forward 80 port through squid (3128).Other ports just get connected in the proxy machine itself since it has IP_FORWARD enabled. All my client machines browsers enabled with "Use proxy 3128". I just want to make all the port to pass through squid server.
To use squid i want to install linux in my 200 GB hard disk. I need guidance regarding to installation phase.A server which will be dedicated for squid proxy what things should I keep while installing my red hat linux operating system.I mean the partition sizes for swap ,root ,boot and any partion for squid cache should I need during making partitions ?
fedora (iptables) eth0 -private :192.168.1.1 eth1 -public : 186.117.50.6 squid proxy 192.168.1.10:3128 my clients range 192.168.2.0/24
how can i make my clients to browse internet only from proxy server my network is NAT 'ed. Please specify a iptable rule to allow internet access for my clients to browse ONLY if they come through proxy server.
I want to restrict some site (Social Networking) through my newly configured squid proxy. But It always allow those site How to block those site. My squid.conf file is configured as follow :-
#Recommended minimum configuration:
acl all src all acl manager proto cache_object acl localhost src 127.0.0.1/32 acl to_localhost dst 127.0.0.0/8 0.0.0.0/32
I'm trying to setup a Centos 5.6 Squid Proxy Server with Content Filtering & Antivirus Scanning Incoming HTTP Traffic from the Internet
I then proceeded to setup an configure the Proxy Server, i was able to test and confirm that Squid and Dansguardian Content Filter is working, however i dont know if Clamav is scanning HTTP traffic before it hits the client/server. Is there a way i can check if the Antivirus scanning is working.. is there some log file or real world test i can i can do to confirm that Clamav is scanning incoming traffic or even blocking potential viruses ??
Anyone who has squid proxy server with Clamav configured and its working can share there settings/setup with me and how they tested it ??
I've been trying to set up a music server and running into some difficulty.
I want to be able to stream music and video to my network and over the internet.
From what I've read so far ampache is what I would like to use but I've yet to find a user friendly guide on how to set it up. I've never set up a server before so all of the guides and documentation have just confused the heck out of me.
