Server :: Setting Up Local Server Using Localhost?

Mar 18, 2010

I have a need to set up the program TNG - The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding and run it on a local server (not on the Internet) for the purpose of learning the system prior to developing it on an actual website. I was told to use http://localhost on my browser (Mozilla Firefox). I get a message saying "That Works!", but it goes on to say that the contents of the web server have not yet been entered. The instructions for the downloaded files (which I unzipped) said to copy to the web root folder (the folder where the web server is located ?, I guess). But I don't know where it is or how to go about it. Can someone help? I already have MySQL and PHP, which are required to run this program, and I also have Apache installed on my Kubuntu 9.10 system.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up A Localhost DaviCal Server ?

Aug 12, 2010

Am having trouble setting up a localhost DaviCal server. I've followed the directions here: [url]

And everything seems to be working, but when I go to: [url]

I get the "Not Found" page. How do I tweak this to use it locally from my computer? Have searched and tried to follow various tutorials, but no luck.

What I'm trying to do is setup a CalDav server locally on my computer so I can interface Thunderbird with it. The reason being then I can sync my Android phone with the CalDav server on my computer, thus syncing my Thunderbird calendar with it. Android is great, but currently the only ways to sync your calendar is to go through google's servers (not interested) or use the new CalDav sync software from the market... which is what I'm trying to do.

All the tutorials I've found are either for sharing the load on a server or for setting up a separate machine as the squid.

Server :: Setting Up Local DNS Server

Nov 2, 2009

Further to my previous post, I've been setting up a local web development server using Ubuntu Server 9.10. Thanks to another contributor to this forum, it's now all working.I've installed all of the module necessary (I think) to enable it to act as a DNS server. What I would like to do now is set up a DNS zone inside my network, so that I can go to http://servername instead of http://localhost.I would also like to set it up so that I can have http://servername/www.sitename.com/ and have www.sitename.com as the site root. I've previously achieved something similar using Vhosts on my old setup (which used XAMPP on my local machine). I presumed I could use DNS instead once I'd set up my local webserver. Please bear with me if I'm not referring to things correctly - I'm a web developer who is only just learning about web server management.

General :: Setting Up Local Server For Php / Mysql

Feb 28, 2010

I've been doing XHTML/CSS for the past several weeks, and started learning PHP last week (all on windows). Learned how to set up IIS server, mysql and php to be able to do all the work locally. Now, I've got Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop and want to continue working with the book I have on it, so I can do some of the work when I'm away from home as well. Questions I have are:

1. How to set a server up?
2. SQL? (mysql?)
3. php? How do I check if I already have any of those installed on my system, and if not how to set them up?
4. where would the root system be for the server if I have it, or if not, where will it be?
5. do I refer to it as "localhost" here aswell i.e. [URL]

#!/bin/sh
rsync="/usr/bin/rsync -avHzL --delete --delay-updates" # replaced -q with -v for debuging purposes, removed --bwlimit, added -L to follow symlinks
mirror=centos.politechnika.lublin.pl::CentOS # tried several different same result

I tested mirror consistency by putting the mirror addres I'm syncing with, directly into repo file. Than yumex works fine. I tried several different mirrors with the same result.

Networking :: Server On Multiple VLANs Server Not Responding To Pings From Non-local Subnets?

Jul 14, 2010

I've got a machine running Ubuntu Server that is on several VLANs. Each VLAN has its own subnet and the server has an address on each subnet. The switches are set to allow tagged traffic to the server for each VLAN that it is on. Switch ports ending with workstations are given untagged ports on whatever VLAN is appropriate. Workstations are given addresses on a subnet for each VLAN via DHCP. All this works great and hosts on any subnet/VLAN can access the server as normal via its address on that subnet/VLAN.

Accessing the machine by its address on a non-local subnet is where I run into a problem. Inter-subnet traffic has to go through a router, which has been set up appropriately. Running tcpdump on the server and pinging it from a workstation on a subnet, using its address on a different subnet, shows the server receives the ping, but sends no response:

Code:
sudo tcpdump -i vlan4 -n
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode

Server :: Redirect Local DNS Query To Remote DNS Server On Non Standard Port?

Feb 19, 2010

The issue is that my CentOS workstation is in a vlan from where the Intranet's DNS servers are unreachable. For browsing the web there is an ISA proxy server, which I presume resolves DNS for my firefox. However, wget, host, ping and aria2c fail to get any sort of DNS resolution since they're being run from command line.I have exported HTTP_PROXY value, which provides me internet access on console, but, only when I connect using IP address. It fails on name resolution.

My question is:May I redirect the DNS queries to my home PC which would be running a DNS server on a non standard port?I was thinking of putting nameserver 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf and then put iptables rule to redirect 127.0.0.1:53 UDP to a.public.ip.address:3535 UDP..I don't know if I am shooting blanks or what, I am not very much aware of this kind of setup. My main need is to provide DNS resolution to console apps.I want to utilize my company's idle bandwidth for bulk downloads, so, using proxy, SSH tunneling through my Home PC is out of question.

CentOS 5 Server :: Local Users Cannot Upload Files To VSFTP SERVER

Nov 25, 2010

I've setup a Lamp Server for Testing, The Lamp Server is Up & Running on CentOs 5.5

I am now trying to setup a VSFTP server where local users can upload files to there home directory so that Apache can serve web pages straight from the directories of system user home/accounts giving users the ability to run their own web sites which are hosted off the main server [tutorial here: [url]

So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error

I have searched online for similar problems like mine and so far i've tried alot of the solution but none seem to work. I'm confused, dont know where i went wrong, i put the users in a group called ftpusers and here are the permissions on the users (test, ftpuser & testftp) home directory. have a look an tell me where i went wrong :(

Also the root directory where the web pages are served from is called public_html here are the permissions

Here is my vsftp.conf file can someone check it to see if i made any errors in there:

Server :: Setting Up Sendmail On A Blank RHEL 5.5 Server Setup

Jun 21, 2010

Having some issues setting up sendmail on a (basically) blank RHEL 5.5 server setup. My ultimate goal is to be able to automagically send logs / errors / notifications to ourselves from the server.

Our basic setup is a Win 2003 domain with exchange running on mail.domain.com.au.

I've edited the '/etc/mail/sendmail.mc' and added the :

Code:

line to it.

Also added the domain (domain.com.au) to the '/etc/mail/local-host-names' files

Also edited submit.mc and added

Code:

When I try and send a mail from root or a test user to one of the domain accounts, it seems to go fine, i.e no errors are reported but it never gets delivered.

From the mail logs:

Code:

So it seems to be sent to the queue no problems and when I check the queue :

Code:

Total requests: 0

Not nothing ever gets received. Am I missing something? I have read and read and read but dont seem to be getting any furthur.

So in the end this server doesn't need to do anything except be able to send mail from root to an external mail address.

CentOS 5 Server :: Setting Up CUPS (command Line) On New Server?

Mar 29, 2009

I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable. Here is my problem. The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:

a) do this

b) do that

Server :: Set Up A Fax Server As A Printer For Local Network?

Jun 28, 2009

Folks, I have an old notebook (IBM T23) running as my print server on the home network. Recently my wife needed to fax some documents. No problem, said I, I will just set up a fax server. That was months ago and I have achieved nothing more than dig a deep pit. Sigh.

Could some kind person give me step by step instructions for this?

Setup: LAN including IBM T23 with an external modem (it has an internal winmodem, but I expect using that to be just too hard) and running FC10. This machine currently has the only printer, accessible from all machines on the LAN.

Wish list: Be able to fax from any machine on the network, via the T23->modem. Preferably, to see the fax device as a printer on client machines, so it is a simple matter for my wife to 'print' to the fax. Machines on the LAN are FC10 (wife) and FC11 (me). Ability to receive faxen is not necessary, but if it is feasible I MIGHT try to set up for it too. The phone line is our normal house line, so I don't want the fax to pick up any incoming call unless I instruct it to.

Current status: Hylafax installed on the T23. So far cannot make it recognise the external or internal modems. Have not figured out how to make it appear as a printer on the T23 or over the LAN. The problem is me, but at my advanced age I am not too proud to admit my failing grey matter and ask for help.

Kind regards, Doug.

Server :: Local Dns Server With No Internet Access

Oct 1, 2009

In my computer networking class I have the option of doing a project where I set up a dns server for our classroom network. The problem is that this network is totally separate from the school network and we aren't allowed to connect it to the internet. I want all the machines to ping each other by name instead of ip using dns instead of host files on all 20 computers. I read on a site somewhere that you cannot do this because the dns queries will always go to the root servers. Is this correct? Is there some way I can do this using dns? The machine in question is using Ubuntu 9.04.
