I'm having problems with squid, and i don't know how to solve them because I'm new to linux. a. Why squid in my computer often does not work? The process has already started (using the command sudo squid start), but the Internet on client computers can not connect. This can be be resolved if the proxy server computer is restarted. Anybody know why is this happen?
b. How do I set the client bandwidth limitation using squid? I want the client computers can only use maximum 60-70 KB / s. Do I need another additional software package?

filter bandwidth for some users (about 150, from 100.100.100.1 trough 100.100.100.250) on LAN. All LAN users connect to the internet through RedHat linux server and all I could do so far is to ban some of them using iptables and commands
-A INPUT -s 100.100.100.107/32 -j DROP
-A FORWARD -s 100.100.100.107/32 -j DROP
-A INPUT -s 100.100.100.235/32 -j DROP
-A FORWARD -s 100.100.100.235/32 -j DROP
I would like to set a download/upload limit for some of them, is that possible?

We have a sipmle office network set up that we also use use to connect to the internet, however of late the number of users has increased thus slowing internet access. Bandwidth upgrade is not an option thus i have to do bandwidth shaping on our linux router. The question is how do set the squid configs to allow certain IP's range a certain percentage bandwidtheg 60% and furthe divide the rest. Alternatively how can allow certain IPs to have higher bandwidth access.

I want to limit bandwidth for downloading files with squid. I want to reserve bandwidth for other traffic (esp. web browsing). I know about delay pools but I don't understand well. Some users use download managers to download large movie files. I don't want to block downloading but I want to give them limited bandwidth. May be 5KBps or 6KBps because I have only 512Kbps (64KBps) connection.

I gone through above methodogies ,when i finish one methods(IGI/PTR) i came to know,one application should run in client side and another application should run in server side (i.e,) Internet Service Provider side,
In IGI/PTR method ./ptr-client.c & ./ptr-server.c is there .,if we want available bandwidth,I Should run ./ptr-client.c (in myside)correspondingly ./ptr-server.c then only we wil get a availble bandwidth...
My need is without run any application on the server side ./ptr-server.c like that,but I should develop the application only on client side (in my routerside based on linux)..
1:whether it is possible to get the available bandwidth run application in client side only?.if possible. how i implement the code in client side( only )for getting the available bandwidth ...whether any source code is available?...

I have a UBUNTU server 10.04 LTS with 3 network interfaces (eth0,1,2) which eth0 is connected to my lan and others connected to two different ISPs , I would like to know is there any way to share bandwidth of this two ISP for my LAN , I mean for example if eth1 has X MB bandwidth and eth2 has Y MB bandwidth my clients those who use download manager for downloading file from internet has X+Y MB download and upload bandwidth.I do not want just limiting each user or service to use one of those interfaces I want to share them for all to increasing my internet bandwidth

Can squid do 'fair bandwidth sharing' ? What i mean is, if there is 1 user online on a 4mg line, that user will be using the entire 4mg line speed, and if there are 2 users online, each user will have 2mg line speed, and so on. I have squid cache set up already, but i just need to know how bandwidth distribution/sharing can be handled Can squid also be used to limit/disconnect users after they have used up their allotted bandwidth? I created a the class like this for shaping the packets with a specified bandwidth rate.....

For Our Requirement:-
I dont want to specify the bandwidth rate strictly like this rate750kbit ceil 750kbit,based on whatever speed is coming which should allocate the bandwidth rate for particular class...I need one application for finding the upcoming bandwidth & Is any other method is there for specify the bandwidth rate in a classes.

Does squid automatically split bandwidth between connected clients? I'm wondering if someone was downloading a lot of data and someone else connected whether it would split the access 50:50 between them? I have 1 user that is using a lot of bandwidth but the server doesn't seem to split it up between all connected clients so others are receiving slow access. I don't have this client's IP address but I do have ncsa auth connected. Will delay_pools work with an ncsa username?

Is there anyway to monitor the current bandwidth in use by a user (NCSA auth) on squid? Occasionally we get a user downloading too many videos at once, which blocks bandwidth to other users on the network. As I have no idea which user it is until the end of the day (SARG reports), we just restart the squid server to disconnect their downloads.

I have configured a normal squid & now I want to manage internet bandwidth thru. "squid" proxy only.
Squid proxy server ip is :- 192.168.17.30
Client PC ip addres is 192.168.17.25
Total bandwidth avaialable :- 2 Mbps
Now, I want to limit bandwith of 400 kbps for the ip address 192.168.17.25 pc only. So, is there any method available for bandwidth limiting for a single pc?

I setup a server with vmware esxi 4. I installed opensuse 11.2 and I have successfully setup an internet gateway and I manually configured (static) my client IP. My question is, is there any software or commands that I could use to manage the bandwidth usage for each client? eg. only 5Mbps for 192.168.1.5, 10Mbps for 192.168.1.10, etc

i have a squid proxy on a centos 5.4 64 Bit machine.
i can share internet on my other boxes hosting centos 32 bit and windows by entering the proxy server IP in the network proxy (centos) internet explorer (windows).
but i cannot get mails on my thunderbird client behind the proxy even though i have included ports 110 and 25 in the squid. i v heard it cannot do it as squid is not imap proxy.

I have recently configured squid proxy server in rhel5 so now I am able to blocking some websites ok, but still I have one problem how can I block gtalk by using squid proxy, one more thing I blocked gmail so now client xp systems are not logging into gmail but still they using gtalk to chatting the things to others. So ultimately I need to block gtalk also by using squid proxy.

In the menue of Kubuntu 10.10 (live-CD) for selecting the keyboard layouts
appears a message saying that there is a limit of selecting maximum four keyboard layouts, if I try to select a fifth one. That is very little four people involved/dealing with languages or for computers shared by several people from different countries. Does anybody knows anything about this limit and how to increase this number? In windows you can select more than a dozen languages. Where is the problem? Is it a problem of the KDE or of the linux kernel or what kind of problem is it? An other user told that this problem exists also in other versions e.g. in Ubuntu.

I have a 500G disk and want to setup it as a test machine with many partitions.
The first partition is for Windows XP. It works. I use USB disk to boot Ubuntu, so I can use Ubuntu's command dd to backup my XP partition.
Than I set more than 10 partitions. Then Ubuntu booted from USB does not always work. It always boots, but when I open a terminal, I get funny characters.. It seems the problem is something to do with number or size of partitions.
Is there a limit for number of partitions or size of partitions?

trying to create a "local network" by directly connecting an IBM Thinkpad with Debian Linux installed on it to an Alix computer running Voyager Linux. I'm following a "how to" I found to create a music server, hence the requirement. My issue is I can't get a static IP address to be configured on the Debian machine.I've trawled the net and have found the instructions about editing the /etc/network/interfaces and have tried to do this. First I tried to get DHCP working so I could connect the Debian machine to the net and this proved successful. I edited the interfaces file to look as follows:

iface eth0 inet dhcp
Then I tried adding a static IP address to the machine. As this is a network purely between two machines I made up the IP addres and used 192.168.0.1 and used a NetMask calculator to give me a NetMask of 255.255.255.254 (I told the calculator there would be 2 machines on the network). I then edited the interfaces file as follows:

iface lo inet loopback

I re-booted the machine (ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0 keeps saying that eth0 hasn't been configured - a problem there that I don't understand), but during boot up time it failed to assign the Static IP address to eth0 and made me go into SU mode. To fix it I simply replaced the interface file with the static IP inputs with the file that had the DHCP entries (I'd made a copy of the DHCP file), and re-started the machine. Everthing came up fine. So the first question is how do I get a static IP address to be assigned to eth0 such that whenever I shut down and restart the machine the static IP address is always loaded?
The second question is around creating the network via the cross over cable. From what I've found via Google, all I should have to do is create a static IP address on the Debian machine and a static IP address on the Voyager machine. Once they're connected by the cross over cable they should see each other. Is that correct, or do I have to do anything else?
