Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Client - Failed To Retrieve Share List From Server

Apr 15, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu sense about 6.10 and never had to network with a Windows computer before. I have a decent understanding of Linux itself but I am having issues with this samba client. I have a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and am trying to use samba to access my shares on a Windows XP(SP3) computer. I am on the network just fine, and all the computers on the network have static IP addresses. When I go to Places->Network->Windows Network I see the "TITANNET" workgroup, (Even before I changed my workgroup to "TITANNET" in the smb.conf file.), but when I try to access it I get this error:

Code:
Unable to mount location
Failed to retrieve share list from server.

P.S.[0] I tried using /etc/init.d/samba restart but it did not work, I am not sure I am even running the samba server. (Well, it is obvious I am not, what I really mean is what am I running to (not =D)access the shares on my Windows PC.)
P.S.[1] I know that this has probably been posted before. I have searched and searched, I am about 1.5 pots of coffee and 4 hours into this.

Networking :: Bandwidth Monitoring Per Local User?

Mar 17, 2010

I have a Linux host connected via LAN to Internet. No proxy or squid is used on the host and outgoing traffic to Internet is not limited. I have several local users on this box. Recently bandwidth statistics on the switch/router showed increase in the Internet traffic from this host. How do I monitor the traffic utilization per local user on Linux host? I want to be able to monitor the amount of traffic per port and per user, like user alice downloaded 20GB today via port 22, and so on. Do not offer to use Squid, this is not just web traffic I want to monirot but all amount of incoming/outgoing traffic per user per port.

My linux box has 3 network adapter. eth0 connects with ISP, eth1 is for staff network, eth2 is for public user. I want to limit the usage of internet bandwidth. for example, the traffic going through eth0, 75% is for staff network, 25% is for public user.In addition, I setup shorewall on it for port forwarding and filtering, but I felt the traffic shaping of shorewall is complex. I don't need the specific TOS, but only the percentage. could you give me some suggestion?Which software or package I should use to achieve this goal?

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Bandwidth Does Not Share Effectively?

May 16, 2011

I have an Ubuntu box, and there are two another PCs with Windows XP at my home. There is a TP-Link WR340GD wireless broadband router, and a Motorola SB5101E cable modem. Maximum download speed of the Internet connection is about 6 Mbit/sec.While I'm starting some download processes on the Ubuntu box, the other two PCs get only small bandwidth according to their users, although download speed on my computer does not often exceed its maximum.

More precisely: I usually download files at approx. 1 Mbit. The other users complain about that I slow down the Internet connection at their computers, and tell me to stop using the Internet. Is it possible to improve the usage of internet bandwidth, and share the connection fairly between computers

Networking :: Share Windows Partitions On Ubuntu Server From Ubuntu Client?

Jul 11, 2010

Want to share windows partitions (FAT) mounted on an Ubuntu server from an Ubuntu client, over a wireless connection in a small home network. Succeeded mounting linux ahares from client but not the windows shares (I get what sounds like permissions errors). All shares are served by Samba, all have user accounts and passwords. smbclient and smbmount have been used on the client to attempt to mount the shares. Both machines are dual boot, and I'm able to share and print over the network with XP running on both machines.

OS: both machines: Lucid Lynx
Client: Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop
Server: a Medion (german company) cheapo desktop.

Networking :: 3 Nics - Connect To Internet - Share To Local Net - And Connect To Local Net - Not Working

Sep 15, 2009

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1650 server with 3 NICs in it. I am trying to use one NIC (eth0) to connect to the internet, the second NIC (eth1) to share the internet connection to a LAN, and the third NIC (eth2) to connect to the LAN.

It is running Ubuntu server 8.10

The problem that I'm having is that NetworkManager (version 0.7.0) keeps setting eth2 as the default connection, and then I don't get any internet at all from the server.

My main goal is to be able to share files from the server to computers on the LAN. The secondary goal is to have a virtual machine hosting a Halo server, connected through eth2, so that it can host LAN games. But that is a secondary goal after I get the connections to work.

I've been looking around and finding other people who have done bits and pieces of this, but not the whole thing. I had been hoping to simply use the NetworkManger, but I don't mind editing config files.

Also I can't seem to find any good instructions on editing the /etc/network/interfaces file. The man file is incomplete, and everything seems to point back to the man file.

More exactly I have a central location with a CentOS 5.3 running as a gateway and I want to know if it's possible to have a computer from the location B and C connected to A through a VPN connection. I don't want computer from B to see the computer from C, is not necessary. What kind of equipment do I have to put in places? Routers? Managed switches? what can i do to document the problem in a good way. the isp tells me that there are no problems, and that it has to be a linux problem. (ever heard that one before?) the ltsp-clients on my debian servers does not have the same problems, maybe because they are using the proxy on this server?

CentOS 5 Server :: Openvpn Connect To Samba Share From Windows XP Client?

Sep 15, 2009

I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between our CentOS 5.3 server at work and my bosses XP computer at home. At this point, we are kinda locked into Quickbooks. I'm testing the connection from my XP boot at home to see if it works. I can log into our servicemanuals easily enough from XP at home however, the windows takes forever to update. I have the Samba server only listening on port 445 because is seems to work more efficiently at work. I connect to the Samba shares via linux from home and everything works well but, when I try to do anything with the shares from Windows client at home, it's very slow!

I'm thinking that it must have something either to do with the Windows OpenVPN client or the client.conf file. Is there anything I should look at in the .conf file for answers?

Ubuntu Networking :: Still Can't Share An Internet Connection With Windows XP Client?

Feb 1, 2010

I have been trying off and on for weeks to share my Internet connection with a Windows XP client (netbook). While I can ping back and forth between the two machines, in the form of a ping test, I can't get to the Internet from the client, no matter what I try.

My Ubuntu 9.10 desktop (host) has two NICs, eth0 and eth1. eth0 connects to the Internet. eth1 goes to the Windows XP client. Regardless of whether I use an Ethernet crossover cable or a standard cable, I can get the two machines to talk to each other, but no further.

Things I already tried:

-Tried setting eth1 to "shared" mode in NetworkManager on the host. I set the Win XP machine to automatically acquire an address & DNS. Didn't work.

-Manually configured the IP settings on both machines, like this:
client:
address 10.0.0.2
subnetmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.1

[Code]....

Despite all of the above, I still cannot share the host's Internet connection with the client. I don't understand where the client's traffic is going, and why I can't share the connection. As far as I know, I am not doing any sort of firewalling or blocking on the host, so there is no obvious reason that the client's traffic simply disappears. I just know that whenever I open a Web browser on the client, all I ever get is error messages.

I have had no issues setting up a shared connection when the host runs Windows XP, so I am pretty sure there is no broken hardware causing the problem. Why can't I share the connection under Ubuntu?
