Ubuntu Networking :: Make Computer Invisible To Other Clients On A Wireless?

Dec 26, 2010

I want to make my computer invisible or hidden to the other computers connected to the same wireless network. In other words, I want to turn off network visibility or network mapping. I think this amounts to the ability to turn on and off the Windows Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder. [URL]... On windows, I believe this would be comparable to setting the wireless network as Public instead of Home. I like to share files using Ubuntu when I am connected to my Home router, but I don't want to be discoverable or visible to clients on a public wifi network.

I have already created a shared folder on my desktop which installed some sort of networking components to interact with Windows, but I don't want the public wifi network to see this folder, or my computer name at all. I want to be invisible to other clients on the same network. Right now I am visible and can see other clients connected to this public wifi router.

(In case some ask: I do not want to disable SSID broadcasting on the router as it is a public wifi router that I do not have access to.) Can anyone explain how to do this (preferably with a GUI method so I can reverse the steps when I connect to my Home network)?

Ubuntu Networking :: Created Wireless Network Invisible

Aug 14, 2010

I go up to the panel and click on the wifi manager, create a new network and name it "loganspc" with no authentication since previously created networks didnt work with those settings. Now before, I used this in conjunction with my eth0 connection so i could give my ipod internet. then i got a wireless router to do that. its exhibiting the exact same problem. Both the router and my laptop's network are invisible. I create it and then i cant connect to it with my ipod. I do a wifi scan (with an app, its jailbroken) and it doesnt find it still. nor does it find the routers network.

Fedora Networking :: Compaq EVO610c Wireless Invisible

Sep 3, 2010

I've just loaded Fedora 13 - my 1st Linus system - on my laptop. It went smooth and connected to the net via 'eth0'. But my wireless - an EVO610c Multiport W200 lan card - is invisible to Fedora. A couple of data points are:

[root@EVO ~]# ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:02:A53:BE:ED
inet addr:192.168.0.12 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

RX packets:9758 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:6758 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
[Code]....

I have the NetworkManager applet 0.8.1 (2 pc screens) but don't see the "Network' icon under System->Administration I've read that should exist. I have placed the latest 'Windows' networking file from HP (sp2956.exe) into my download directory. What must I do to 'discover' my wireless card? I suspect the use of "ndiswrapper" and have imported it into Fedora. All updates have been done via 'yum'.

Ubuntu :: Make Certain Files/folders Invisible To Specific Users?

Jan 7, 2011

I've got a NAS running and I'd like to somehow make some of the folders and files invisible to certain users only. For example, if I 'ls' a directory, I want to see files 'a', 'b', and 'c'. But if another user does 'ls' in the same directory, I only want them to be able to see 'a' listed.I know I can use 'chmod +700' to make certain files not able to be read/written, but the filename would still appear in a 'ls'.I know I can put certain files inside of a '.hidden' file in the folder, but then it would be hiEdit : I'd also like to mention that the users that connect to the NAS could be coming from Windows or Mac operating systems. So hopefully the solution would work for users from those systems also..

Ubuntu Networking :: Make A Wireless AP And Share Wireless Internet With It?

Mar 12, 2011

I have a Dell Studio 1558 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. It's a brilliant piece of hardware and love everything about it except some of it's overheating problems. When I first bought it with Windows 7 pre-installed, it had an application installed on it called PeerNet, which creates a wireless network for other computers (and wifi-enabled phones) to connect to it. Simultaneously, you could also share your internet connection with these users. The internet connection could be either wired or wireless.

My question is, how do I go about finding the same functionality on Ubuntu since I know my hardware is capable of it. (I believe in Windows 7, it creates a virtual adapter that it uses) I know there are ways to share a WIRED internet connections with some help with the terminal, but I haven't found a way to share a WIRELESS internet connection. The network manager allows you to create a wireless network but I'm unable to connect to another wireless network at the same time.

The reason I mentioned mobile phones is because my mobile (Android 2.2) is unable to find a wireless network created by the network manager, but another laptop is (without internet access that is). I've noticed that mobile devices and iPod's aren't able to find ad-hoc networks on Windows PCs as well.

I hope someone out there will be able to find a solution for me (and surely others as well!) Maybe the final release of 11.04 will help out later if nothing turns up now.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Goes Out When Another Computer Turns On

Feb 9, 2011

I have an Asus Eee S101 netbook running UNE 10.10. When I have the netbook on, I have no problems connecting to my WPA encrypted wireless network being broadcast by a Buffalo router running DD-WRT. When I turn on my desktop computer in the other room (running Windows Vista) which also uses the same wireless network, the netbook disconnects. Then it will take a few minutes to reconnect. Periodically it will do this until the other computer is powered down. I don't know if this is an OS issue or the hardware, but is there any sort of troubleshooting I could do to look into this? It seems like the desktop is somehow interfering with the netbook's connection, booting it offline.

The wired connection is fine, except on that computer that I was making the adjustments from. It won't connect at all. I plugged a friends netbook into the same wired line and it connected. Also there is no wireless signal on any laptops. Mac, Win Linux, don't matter. I tried all the various methods of resetting to default but still when I try to access the router's config page @ http://192.168.2.1 I get the error Code: The server at 192.168.2.1 is taking too long to respond.

Ubuntu Networking :: 8185L Wireless Card Is Freezing Computer?

Jun 6, 2010

The first two times I entered the wireless key on the prompt that appeared shortly after login, the computer froze completely. ctr-alt-f1 ctr-alt-backspace did nothing. The third time, I closed the first prompt and after 10 minutes I tried connecting again. It didn't freeze, at first. The internet worked. It took about 10 minutes later for it to freeze. Now, whenever I boot up, it freezes a few seconds after login. I can boot recovery mode, but I don't know what to do from there. Heres some info I got from the recovery mode:

Computer Brand: Sony PCV RX850
Ubuntu 10.4 32 bit 2.6.32-21-generic i686

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Freezes Computer - Switch To Ndiswrapper?

Jul 28, 2010

Since I upgraded to Lucid, I am dealing with serious instabilities related to my wireless card. What happens is that when there is a lot of wireless activity the computer freezes. It is a complete freeze, the mouse stops moving, if something was coming out of the speakers it keeps echoing, and the only solution is to turn off the computer. The bug seems to coincide with the one listed in here

[URL]

My wireless card is Intersil ISL3890/ISL3886. My whole computer is an HP z555. I'm thinking that is should be a bug in the wireless adapter driver, which is p54pci. The only solution I can think of is to blacklist it and set up ndiswrapper. I am not very comfortable with this solution since a native linux driver should be better than ndiswrapper.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Internet Freezing Leading To Slow Computer

Aug 3, 2011

I first noticed the problem because my wireless internet will stop working. The usb stick has its LED constantly on but it fails to connect. I have tried some methods of restarting the networking, like "sudo restart network-manager", disabling and re-enabling the wireless and networking from the taskbar applet. I tried removing the module and restarting it. It might be a bigger problem because I'll find that things will randomly hand for awhile, like opening system monitor, or running terminal commands. They do eventually run but only after several minutes. A restart seems to get everything working again, but the problem comes back at random times. I am willing to solve this right now as I have time, just let me know what info you need and I will post it.

Update: Some more info I forgot to include. I am running Ubuntu 11.04. It just froze again, I tried logging in and out but the internet still wouldn't work and things were hanging, I couldn't get file manager open. I have even tried shutting down the computer and had it stall on the Ubuntu logo with the dots loading so I had to hard restart.....
