I did a clean install of 10.04 on my Toshiba Satellite laptop, but I cannot make a wireless connection. The icon on the panel spins round and round, but that's it. After a few minutes I will get a message that the wireless network is disconnected. Any ideas?

I can connect to the internet using my wired cable but not by wireless. There is nothing listed under my wireless list. I am new to this and have been unsuccessful in getting my wireless connection going again. I don't even know were to begin. I have a 2wire modem also.

View 2 Replies View RelatedA friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

I have a Dell Mini 9 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. I've had it working for months on Debian Sid, but recently I updated the entire OS to get KDE 4.4 (I also went from a 2.6.30 to a 2.6.32 kernel). Something in that upgrade caused wireless to cease to work properly. The problem is similar to the one described in this thread, but no resolution is mentioned there: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50892 I've gone through all the steps to install the STA drivers/wl module for it, and it basically appears to be working. Using wicd, I can see all the wireless networks in the area.
The problem occurs when trying to connect. When I try to connect to my WPA wireless network, it eventually fails claiming a bad password. When I turned the wireless network into an unsecured network, it eventually fails claiming it's unable to get an IP. I've also tried at the command line with wpa_supplicant and it initially appears to work but in fact it hasn't. I've also got Kubuntu 10.04 installed on this machine, and it can connect without issue (using the proprietary driver that Ubuntu's hardware driver manager allows one to use).Does anyone know what has caused this? I even tried the earlier kernel, so that's not it.

I think I've read every post here about the Broadcom and connection.I thought I tried everything.Turns out (read Chapter�35.�Using NetworkManager) using Connection Manager (K Network Manager) you can not use, what I wanted to use, 'all users, use connection' or said another way, the wifi would be activated and connected Before the user 'logs in'. Well, as I said, it turns out that if you are using gnome, this will work with NetMgr, but NOT in KDE. If you want to use 'system connect' then you have to use 'traditional' if in YaST2. Oh well, at least 'i'm' connected.... (i'm the only user, so not a big deal right now, but would like to get it working...)

I want to share my internet connection with wireless connection.
I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

I've configured the device for my network's settings in YaST's Network Settings tool. Is the card turned off by the kill switch? Where do I find the kill switch?
I have a Dell Studio 1558 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. It's a brilliant piece of hardware and love everything about it except some of it's overheating problems. When I first bought it with Windows 7 pre-installed, it had an application installed on it called PeerNet, which creates a wireless network for other computers (and wifi-enabled phones) to connect to it. Simultaneously, you could also share your internet connection with these users. The internet connection could be either wired or wireless.
My question is, how do I go about finding the same functionality on Ubuntu since I know my hardware is capable of it. (I believe in Windows 7, it creates a virtual adapter that it uses) I know there are ways to share a WIRED internet connections with some help with the terminal, but I haven't found a way to share a WIRELESS internet connection. The network manager allows you to create a wireless network but I'm unable to connect to another wireless network at the same time.
The reason I mentioned mobile phones is because my mobile (Android 2.2) is unable to find a wireless network created by the network manager, but another laptop is (without internet access that is). I've noticed that mobile devices and iPod's aren't able to find ad-hoc networks on Windows PCs as well.
I hope someone out there will be able to find a solution for me (and surely others as well!) Maybe the final release of 11.04 will help out later if nothing turns up now.
I am running FC13 on a Compaq Presario 2100 using a Broadcom BCM4306. I was able to get it running thanks to Fedora Unity Project. But It's a very unstable connection. I don't know what settings to adjust or enable or disable. It's not my router, this is the only wireless connection in the house that I have trouble with.

I configured the DSL connection (username and password), and it can't connect to it (the icon in the system tray keeps showing, that it is searching for the connection, and from time to time it flickers).I have tried it with ElementaryOS 64 bit and LinuxMint 64 bit (both based on Ubuntu), and either it is the same problem, or it doesn't even bother to look up the connection. I have also tried it with KiwiLinux (also based on Ubuntu, but there is only a 32 bit edition), and the network worked without problem (no sound though if jack plugged in - the same problem as with my old ASUS A3E laptop).
The network connection works fine under Windows 7.I have been careful when i introduced the username and password, so mistyping shouldn't be the problem.So what should i do, where should i look to try to get it to work?
I just removed Windows XP from my Dell Latitude D510 and installed Kubuntu 10.04 LTS lucid lynx. Obviously upgraded with apt.It seems to try to connect to the local AP (no encryption), but the connection fails.

When I had Mandriva back in 2009, my Sony Ericsson mobile had some issues in connecting but in the end I managed to get it done using the control center. On the other hand, now I have the Samsung Wave which very different. But the old Ubuntu 2009.4 can tether both the sets easily from the live cd.I'm typing this from FF running from the live cd infact

I have a problem with my wifi adhoc network which I previously had under Windows. I recently got a laptop computer and installed 64 bit fedora 11. I can make wireless connections fine but for my ISP I require a dial in using an username and password. On my desktop this is easy I just make a DSL connection under network manager and select eth0 my wired network card as the hardware and away I go. But now I can't select the wireless card as my hardware connection so my DSL keeps on trying to connect through eth0 which is obviously not plugged in. How do I go about making this connection? I have searched google and other people have this problem but I haven't seen any replies. I have tried using pppoe-setup and manually setting the hardware as wlan0 but this doesn't seem to work as under network manager it just defaults back to eth0.

I connected the cable and connection was started (in the network managed the two gray circled turned green) but then instead of connecting me the connection was aborted.
