Ubuntu Networking :: Button To Enable Wireless Is A Touch Button?
Jan 20, 2010So I have a intel wifi link 5100 , the drivers should work BUT iwconfig doesn't show my card ..
However doing a ' sudo lshw -C network ' command , it DOES show my wireless card is recognised but not enabled and here is where the problems start ..
I have a touch button on my laptop to enable/dissable it And when I touch it in Ubuntu it doesn't light up like in W7
How can I enable it :s? I really want to use ubuntu !
Fedora Networking :: Doesn't Work After Turned Off Wireless By Pressing A Wireless Button On Laptop?
May 19, 2011Recently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

May 11, 2011I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.
I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.
Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.
As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience.

EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working.

Jun 22, 2010So, after installing Lucid wireless doesn't work for me. When I click on the network icon on the status bar, it shows "wireless is disabled".
With that message, I press the wifi button on my HP laptop and it turns off my blue-tooth, without changing the status of my wifi.

The switch works fine in windows, but not in ubuntu. The switch didn't work with the live cd either, but I thought it might after install. The wired card that is in the laptop is no good and quit working a couple of years ago so all I have is wireless now.

May 27, 2010just installed this yesterday-there is no disconnect button for the wireless-the only way to disconnect is to disable the wireless altogether.Any else have this problem?

General :: Keyboard Function Button That Corresponds To Wireless Doesn't Work
Aug 28, 2011I want to install Linux on my laptop. I started with Arch but 4 hours later, I'll take anything so now I'm trying Ubuntu.It appears that the keyboard function button that corresponds to my wireless does not work, and perhaps is windows dependent?Every time I try to interact with wlan0, I get the error "Operation not possible due to RF-kill". And as I've looked around online, it has been suggested in other forums that the only way to resolve this is to reinstall windows and dual boot, so the FN key will work.
I think this is ridiculous. There must be a way to persuade the RF-kill to be turned off again, shouldn't there?I don't have a recover disk for this laptop and I don't want to go through the trouble of requested one from acer. I reformatted the whole disk while attempted to install arch.

May 26, 2009I installed SLED 11 (and openSuse 11.1 as well) but the wireless button(WIFI ON/OFF) which is next to power button of my laptop does not work. It worked in vista (formatted the HD and installed SLED 11 as soon as I bought the notebook ) the wireless driver is Ath5k. The button should actually light up the LED and if the Wireless card is active LED should be BLUE, and ORANGE if the wireless is disabled.. Now its always ORANGE!
I tried to capture the hardware address of the LED but it was a failure! (previously I configured Touchpad ON/OFF switch by myself writing a small script after retrieving values from dmesg)...
So the main issue I have is WIFI On/Off switch (and LED) doesn't work well...

Mar 28, 2010A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

Feb 22, 2010i have an hp zv 6000 laptop. I cant get the wifi button to turn on. It sees the card has drivers loaded but because the quicklaunch will not function i cant get the thing to turn on. is there a way to force the hardware on by bypassing the buttons. Some of the button do work though. the music button brings up the media player.
My system is a dual boot with xp. buttons work with xp. wlan on in bios. if windows is not running i cant make the button work. just so you know i am kinda a noob at ubuntu. used to run redhat back in compsci days. been a while.

Apr 26, 2010The application works rather well for most part, it generates the dh, ta, certs and config for the server and i can activate the VPN connection just as planed and clients can connect to the port so that works as well.The problem comes when i try to use the "Export" button to generate a config for the client and a key (cert) for the user.If i'm not mistaken that's what the export button is ment to be used for.

Feb 18, 2010I followed the sticky about setting up wireless and I have come to an issue where the WLAN switch which is on this computer can be pressed, the light comes on, but no WLAN. When I looked in dmesg, this is what I get:

eth0: Radio is disabled by RF switch.
When running iwconfig wlan0 heres what I get:

Notice it says that the 'Radio is disabled by switch' in dmesg. I can press that switch until the end of the world comes and it does absolutely nothing but make the WLAN light put on a light show. And it shows the wlan to be unassociated with any clients. So, what are my options to get this Wireless up and working?

CentOS 5 Networking :: VPN Button Has Greyed Out
May 8, 2009Just installed Centos 5 and I'm wanting to learn. However I also need this machine to VPN to work. When I go to Network Connections and click on the VPN tab the button to "Add" a connection its greyed out.I've googled and tried a few things in terminal with openvpn, pptpd client, poptop, but now I'm more confused than ever. I think the problem is most of the pages I hit are how to create a SERVER on the Centos 5 box, I just want to be able to vpn into work, so I'm assuming a client?My question is
1. Is there a gui interface for a quick VPN connection?
2. If not, what is a help doc with just the connecting side of the puzzle?
I have a 2nd computer with Windows on it that was preset up on VPN for me.

Jul 26, 2011After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 via the online upgrading method I had much trouble getting wireless to work but after following the instructions at .Driver/bcm43xx it burst into life, that is until I powered off and now I have to sudo modprobe b43 before the hardware button for the wifi will work and and then I am able to get online. This is for every power on session!! Once enabled it will switch on and off via the hardware button and the light is operational. Before the sudo modprobe b43 the buttonoes something as evidenced by sudo rfkill list after each press of the button. Is there any way to have the command sudo modprobe b43 inserted somewhere in the power on sequence? This was a working function on 10.10!
