Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To The Internet - Time Out On "connecting To ..."

Nov 11, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit on a Dell PowerEdge T310) that cannot connect to the Internet. The network interfaces work fine because I can connect to our local network and to the firewall appliance. The network is controlled via DHCP. I have another Ubuntu 10.10 machine that connects to the internet without any issues, so I don't believe that it is a firewall issue.

Via networking tools, I am able to perform a lookup, so DNS appears to be working. When I perform a trace route, it makes it to my firewall and then returns "no reply" from there. In firefox, I time out on "connecting to ..." I also fail on any apt-get update calls. I've disabled ipv6 in Firefox with no effect. Ifconfig results and gateway route is all correct.

(*) Can not open web pages via IP address.
(*) Can ping internal hardware no problem.
(*) I can connect to the Internet via Ethernet no problem.
(*) I used to be able to connect via wireless on this computer. No settings changed in the interim.
(*) Several other computers currently connected & accessing Internet via the same wireless - no problem.
(*) Based on other posts, I disabled the avahi daemon, but this had no effect.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect Only One PC At A Time To Adsl Router/modem For Internet Access?

Apr 1, 2011

I have 2 pcs at home. I dont have a switch so I can connect only one PC at a time to my adsl router/modem for internet access. In the past I had successfully connected the two PCs (NIC to NIC) to each other using the same ethernet cable which was supplied with my dlink adsl modem.

Recently the motherboard of on of my PC went bad so I replaced it with a new one. The problem is when I connect the two using the same Ethernet cable they won't connect. The lights on the Ethernet port won't light up. I can still connect both of them to the adsl router (NIC to Router) (one at a time).

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To 2 Different Networks At The Same Time?

Apr 10, 2011

I have 2 network cards in my computer, and I would like to connect them to 2 different networks. Both connections work fine when I use them so that the other one is unplugged, but as soon as I connect the second plug (doesn't matter which one is first) they both stop working.I've been googling and reading dozens of pages about how to set this up, but I still can't figure it out.

One connection gets its addresses from DHCP and that connection is used for pretty much everything. The other connection has a static IP, and is used to access just one other computer, which is in the same subnet as that static IP.I'm using Ubuntu and I've been using the NetworkManager Applet to manage my connections. If I've understood my googling correctly, NetworkManager Applet can't be used alone for this kind of setup, is that correct? (Even though it has that "Routes..." button and "Use this connection only for resources on its network" which I've tried for the connection with the static IP, but they don't seem to help.)

So my questions are:

1. So I really can't use NetworkManager Applet for this?

2. What software / tools should I use instead? (My googling brought up such wildly different solutions, and I don't know which ones are outdated, if any.)

3. Should I get rid of NetworkManager Applet completely?

I'm familiar with routing in theory, totally clueless about the networking tools in Linux, but happy to read manuals and happy to learn to use the command line versions if anyone can point me to the right direction.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Wireless Network Takes Little More Time

Oct 26, 2010

I noticed that it takes a couple more seconds before Ubuntu connects to my wireless network when it wakes up from sleep. I didn't have this annoyance when I was using 10.04, and only appeared when I upgraded to 10.10. It takes about 5-7 seconds before it indicates that it's connecting. When I was using 10.04, it only took a maximum of 2 seconds for it to indicate that it's in the process of connecting to my network.

Fedora Networking :: Wired Networking Not Connecting In 12 With Windows Internet Connection Sharing?

Jan 16, 2011

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.

Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

Networking :: Strangest While Connecting To The Internet Ever Seen?

Apr 5, 2011

I had an ubuntu 10.4 box, I used it mainly for programming, virtualization & other stuff. I've installed this box about 1 month ago, working on it everyday. About 2 days ago problem appeared when I just opened up firefox for cheking my E-Mail. I typed : [URL]. & nothing appeared & I just seen the famous firefox page when a networking problem is around . I just wondered and checked the connectivity & the wire itself, but find no problem around them, while playing with firefox I just had a turned on virtualBox machine (Windows XP service Pack 3), I just checked the internet within vm & working fine, I checked my e-mail from vm (windows xp), I thought restarting the system might help to solve the problem but damn, problem didn't solved & still arounds Well, I searched through websites dedicated to linux networking & forums that might help, I did anything that faced to my brain , follow another people recipes but problem did't solved for about 3 days ! Playing with primary & alternative dns didn't help, I did my best about solving the problem, disabling ipv6 from both linux networking settings & firefox itself didn't help also . After that, I thought reinstalling the linux might help to solving the problem, but install a new version of ubuntu, 10.10, I tried it, install it but the holyshit problem still arounds ! I think this might be a bug on ubuntu distro, I tried Mint 10 & the same problem, reinstalling x64 version of fedora core & the same problem .It's interesting that the same settings for TD-8101G TP-Link working fine for my Windows XP, Windows 7 x64 & the problem is arounds just for my linux distros .As I said I checked the internet for the problem & found nothing workable for me. I thought it's better to describe the problem & maybe another people faced with that problem .

Unfortunately, I seem to have to make the module, and insmod the module 8712u.ko everytime I boot up. I know I had it set in 9.04 to be able to do this on boot up, but in 9.04 I didn't have to re-make it everytime.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Internet Through Network Bridge

Nov 13, 2010

I setup a network bridge on pc A, with windows 7 installed on it, using windows default bridging tool. I connected computer B to computer A and Im trying to connect to the internet through the network bridge on computer A. Computer B (client) has two OS's installed, win XP and linux(tried with different distributions, didnt work). On windows XP everything is working, when i try to ping the router (after computer A) it also responds. On linux system nothing is working, and im not quite sure why.

I set up linux to receive IP adress from DHCP, which is router in this case (behind computer A), same way windows XP was configured. I decided to ask here, because I couldn't find anything on the net. My guess is windows-made bridge supports only windows-OS's but that would be kind of strange (its just a software bridge).
