I'm not completely new to ubuntu, I've been using it for about 6 months, my laptop, suddenly decided to no longer let me connect wirelessly, it was mid pidgin conversation, I couldn't even tick the box to enable wireless. So I read in one of these posts that one person had to reinstall their wireless driver to get it working again. so I uninstalled my driver (Broadcom STA) however when I went to activate it, all I get is the error message installation failed and to look for log "/var/log/jockey.log" and here I admit that I'm not knowledgeable about computers since I'm not sure where to look for the log and also what the log would mean.

I upgraded Ubuntu to 11.04 I can NO longer connect wirelessly using my BCM4312 WLAN Card. It connected with no problems before dist upgrade using Ubuntu 10.04. Im really not sure why I cannot connect. I cannot even see my router in edit wireless connections settings. I can however see my neighbours routers who are using WPA2 encryption. But I cannot see my router.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled The Broadcom STA proprietry wireless driver several times using Additional drivers. This did not fix my issue.
I am connected by ethernet at the moment so I do have internet connection.

I have been trying to wirelessly connect to my network for weeks now. My netgear dongle is fully working. I have installed the driver using ndiswrapper. I can see my network and signal is excellent; everything is working perfectly. When I try to connect it thinks about it but never connects. The password is fine; it works great with other computers. decided to have a go with wicd, so got rid of the Gnome network manager and installed wicd. Adaptor and wicd appear to be working brilliantly EXCEPT I cannot connect. wicd tells me its a bad password. Password fine because it works brilliantly with every other device I connect to my network. If I remove security from network, it tells me it cannot get address, even though it sailed passed that with no problem when there was security. I have searched the internet for a solution to this problem time and time again. Lots of people seem to be having this problem, but no one knows the solution. Is there a solution? It happens with both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS v1 v2 and Ubuntu 11.04. What the heck is going on. This happens with WPA WEP and anything else I try to use

I want to be able to access my desktop from work so I first set up a DNS. I can ssh into my own computer and using the ip address but when I try to ssh using my DNS (this is from my home wireless which is Linksys E2000), I get the following error:
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
debug1: Connecting to ****.com [74.79.145.28] port 50000
debug1: Connection established.
debug1: identity file /home/andy/.ssh/id_rsa type -1
[Code].....
I set up the settings on the Linksys to accept DDNS but I am thinking there might be something else I overlooked? I do not understand completely what is happening to debug this. It seems like it initially accepts the connection and then something strange occurs.

I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).
I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.
I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:
net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
Then I tried this on the laptop:
sudo iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ath0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.
But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.

- CAN connect to other computers - ssh and vnc over the home network (via D-link 524 router).
- CAN get an IP address via DHCP
- CANNOT get internet connections - including router at 192.168.0.1
- CANNOT even ping router (but I get an IP address - weird)
- Other computers on the network CAN access internet
- Live CD could not access internet
results of ifconfig
Code:
Code:
I am wondering if his ISP could be doing this - he has received a warning letter about bitorrent. Could the isolate a single computer behind a NAT router?
This is the results from dmesg:
Code:
I have tried:
- to set proxy settings as "Direct internet connection"
- disconnecting power to (including 30 sec wait): modem, router, computer + unplugging ethernet from computer
- Live CD (he only had an old one 7.10) which also didn't connect to internet, but as I am remote, I couldn't do any more. We are downloading a 10.04.1 iso for him to burn tomorrow, and will try that again.
- Uninstalled Crashplan which was the last software that we installed (and it was working ok).
I am currently ssh'ing into another computer on the network that IS working, and then ssh'ing into my Dad's computer - including a VNC session (tunneled through both machines and router).

I tried to connect two ubuntu computers via crossover network. But sometimes they can connect and see each other and even ping each other and sometimes not!
Each time, each of my PC's can ping it's own IP address but may not ping the other PC. I tried to disconnect cable, reconnect, disable network, enable it again, change IP address, disconnect via Network Manager Applet, reconnect and... . But when one of them don't want to connect I can't do this anyway!
Anyone knows what must be the problem? Sometimes it took about many seconds to get them connected, and sometimes they can't connect for many hours.
I must add that I have an ADSL modem on one of two Ubuntu PCs that connect via another cable.

After years of neglecting to get into Linux (for no real reason other than being lazy and decently content with Windows), I've not been shoved head first into the Linux world due to a Linux class I am taking. I've only been in the class for two weeks, so sorry about my lack of Linux knowledge! Anyway, I've downloaded and installed Ubuntu (using wubi, off of Windows 7 on a Sony Vaio VPCF1) and I'm having a few problems.
The main problem is that I can't connect wirelessly to the internet. Using ethernet works great, but I need to be able to take my laptop to class so I need to figure out how to get this working. The only thing I've tried was to check System> Admin> Hardware (or something along those lines?) to see that it said I have no peripherals connected. I don't even know if that is the right place to start, again.. The next problem is that the mouse-pad does not work. This is not a huge problem as I have a wireless USB one that works great, but still something I'd love to learn how to fix, if only for the knowledge of how to.
After that... is it possible to change resolution in Linux? I assume yes, how? And final question! Is this all something to do with wubi? Would it be better to do a dual boot with Windows 7, or would that even make much of a difference?

I've got a Linksys WRT54G v2.2 and a SmartAX MT882 modem I can connect to the Internet by connecting a Ethernet cable from the computer to the router but not wirelessly. I did the following to get it setup from my computer, can anyone see what I may have missed? Now connect the MT882 Ethernet cable directly into one of the WRT54G's LAN ports. Now once the computers are connected they will ask for an IP address and the WRT54G will forward them to the MT882's DHCP server for an address and thus you will get multiple computers through wireless connected to the MT882 and the Internet.

I have an Compaq Mini 700 which has a busted hard drive. I'm trying to get Ubuntu onto a USB disc to use the internet. I have tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Desktop and neither will connect wirelessly. A wireless icon appears with an ! indicating a problem. When going into Hardware Drivers there are 2: Broadcom B43 wireless driver and Broadcom STA wireless driver - neither are activated. Trying to activate the first results in an instant error: "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log". The second goes through the process of installing and results in an error. When trying to install anything it all results in some kind of error. How can I get the wireless card working? I believe it is a broadcom.

I am running openSUSE 11.2 and just recently my network has been down. I'm using Gnome, but using Yast to configure my network (I'm usually forced to use wireless as I travel a lot on my laptop). Usually, when I'm connected to a wireless network, it will show up as so in the Gnome start menu, but recently, it will only say Wired there, even though I have nothing connected to my ethernet jack. I can connect wirelessly to a home router, but cannot use the wireless in any other way. I have tried manually disabling the ethernet connection to no avail. Unfortunately I am limited in my linux knowledge, so I am kinda stuck here.

I just bought an almost new netbook with the Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on it. It's made by System76 and was designed to work with Ubuntu. I downloaded Xubuntu-desktop and wicd and it now has a lot of software on it. It connects to the internet easily with a wired connection, but I cannot get it to find an ip address on my unencrypted home wireless network...it does see my network, though.I don't see the name of the hardware when I type sudo lspci. How can I find what chipset I have for my wireless device? A how to get online wirelessly?
