I have two desktop computers on the same home network and I am unable to share files between the two. Both have access to the network. One is able to file and printer share using SAMBA and a windows 7 laptop. The other machine is unable to either do file sharing via Samba or SSL file sharing between the two Ubuntu machines.
View 7 RepliesI have 3 computers connected via an ethernet cable to the same ADSL modem. Each has its own internet address and what appears to be a local address (10.1.1.1, 10.1.1.2 etc).
I would like to enable file sharing between the three but I don't want one of them to be a gateway for the others and I don't want any information that the 3 computers share to go out on the net.
So far, the slack book and man pages imply that years of research are ahead of me and none mentions a "gateway free" configuration.
Right, I would like to be able to share files with another member of my family over our home wireless network. I have ran the command avahi-browse -a but it on returns my computer.

* an IP address
* router address
* subnet mask.
Where can I find these values?
I got my somewhat older desktop running ubuntu 9.10 and I'm loving it so far. However a while ago while I was slightly intoxicated I boasted to my roommates that sharing files with this thing should be super easy, since it's linux and all that. Since then I've been trying to set up the desktop as a streaming media server, with no success. I found a pretty good guide on how to get Samba up and running on instructables. My laptop is part of a school domain. Since many of my roommates go to the same university, theirs are also part of that domain.
For those of you who aren't too familiar with Windows (anymore), your computer can either be part of a workgroup or a domain. A workgroup is intended for home networks and makes it easier to share files, which is what I'm trying to do, and what the guide calls for. I've illustrated the problem in the attached image. As you can see both computers connect to the same router. I don't think I really have to explain, but I just figured I should try to be as clear as possible.
My question to you is: is there any way that I can set up the ubuntu desktop, or samba, so that it can share files over the wireless network at home with the computers that run windows and are part of the school domain? I'm guessing I should somehow be able to access the desktop from another computer on the same network if I give it proper access. I just have no idea how to do it or where to look, since almost everything I encounter calls for putting the windows machine in a home workgroup.

I just installed 9.10 and I tried to share specific folders by right clicking and selecting share. Not a problem.
However when I goto a Windows machine I see the share but cannot connect, says incorrect login/ password. I used the same login/ pass for the linux box and I created a new user and I still get the same results. What am I doing wrong?
I want to use the GUI for this please. When I edit the smb.conf I don't see the share.
I have tried to set up file sharing using ssh, samba with no luck. I now have it set up using NFS the only thing is it is just one way and I need it both ways. I was wondering if I installed the same packages on the other pc if I could make this work both ways.
The command I used on the first pc was:
sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server nfs-common portmap
And on the other pc the command was:
sudo apt-get install nfs-common portmap
Or is there a better way?
How would I set up a LAN network at home between my computer that has Linux and someone else's computer that has Windows? and how would we share files and folders? It's easy if we both are using windows, so now I'm trying to figure this out in ubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a small home/office network, which currently consists of a very old mac running osx10.4, a windoze 7 laptop and an ubuntu 10.04/windoze vista laptop, along with a homebrew setup on a wii which understands smb. I'm in the process of setting up an additional ubuntu PC which will, among other things act as a file and web server, mainly for web development and for sharing files, music and videos.
Up until now I've just run everything on SMB, and I will have to set samba up on the new server, but I would prefer to use a different protocol for the ubuntu and mac systems, as SMB doesn't recognise/create file permissions properly and it takes a while sometimes to notice new files in folders it's recently looked in.
I have encountered many problems in Ubuntu, many of which I have been able to figure out how to fix myself (except a few tricky ones). Found a new one recently that I just cannot figure out. I have set up file sharing on my network between two systems running Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), one a desktop and the other a laptop. I Installed the proper packages on both systems, and it seemed to be working properly. However, on the laptop, when I try to mount or access the public-files of the desktop or laptop I receive the following error:

I have 4 computers/users and we need to put all the files on a central server. The server is running Ubuntu 10.04. What is the best way for these 4 XP users to see the files that will be stored on the server?
Or basically, how will I either share or map the files *from* Ubuntu *to* XP? Also, the users will be reading, writing, creating and deleting files on the server.
I have two computers in my local network one with Ubentu Karmic 64 and one with Win7 64. The problem is in file sharing. I would like to be able to have access from one computers to another in both ways. But now I have only access from ubuntu to windows shares. On win machine I'm able to view ubuntu shared folders and printers but not able to browse them (or use printers from windows). I tried to change samba configuration, but my knowledge is to poor to solve this problem

I installed just about all the samba packages in synaptic that have the little ubuntu symbol next to them on both desktop and laptop except the Kde and document packages. I installed the two necessary packages to enable personal file sharing to work. But I can't seem to access files back and forth from these computers.

I want to note that I was using Arch Linux and this exact setup worked flawlessly. Why on earth would it not work the same in Ubuntu? Is it not the same Samba?
I did a fresh install of Lucid alongside Vista on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804. When I went into "Personal File Sharing" under System > Preferences, it said that the necessary packages were not installed. Using the documentation at this link: [URL] I went into a terminal, opened shares-admin, and as promised it told me that I didn't have the right software installed, and allowed me to check both NFS and SMB to install. I did so, installed, and at the end, it said everything was successful.
After exiting the dialog, the window asking me to install NFS/SMB appeared again. I selected to install, it disappeared, and then reappeared. It did this repeatedly, until I decided to close it out. I then went back to the guide, and went to add a new share. But the drop down box would not allow me to choose Windows share, only Unix (NFS). How do I enable Windows File sharing? I have used Ubuntu in the past and have got it to share with Windows computers flawlessly. Now, it appears that this essential (for me) functionality is broken.
For the first time networking my home computers I'm not interested in getting Ubuntu boxes to to talk to Windows and we now have Ubuntu on all machines.
I'm trying to use the "Personal Files Sharing Preferences" but there is a message telling me I require some packages. Most unlike Ubuntu but it doesn't tell me what packages I do need.

What I would really like to do is have access to sertain directory's on other computers and have full access to read/write within the home directory.
I've been trying for what seems like forever to share a single directory with only two authorized users and I just can't get the permissions right.
Running Ubuntu 10.04 desktop as home file/print server.
Two users: chris and gretchen
Directory to share: Music
Music resides in chris' home folder.
I'd like to have full access for these two users and no access for anyone else. The challenge is that the best I can get for gretchen is read-only. What i've done so far:
Created user accounts for each
Created Samba accounts with passwords for each
Created a group called "family" and added chris and gretchen to it
Assigned the family group to the Music folder.
Shared the folder giving read and write access to family group.
chris seems to work ok but when gretchen access it from her snow leopard laptop she can't create a new folder. It should be noted that chris is also the admin account.
Ok Ive tried soooo many tutorials and been through sooo many forums but I cant get my file sharing to work from any computer. a) Make a shared folder to the extent that people can view it but to access/open it requires a password.
b) Set that folder to have a set size (quota) so that people putting files onto the store/folder don't flood my computer with video/music.

trying to share a few folders with Windows PCs. Usually I just right click and choose "Sharing Options" from nautilus and choose to share it. This isn't there in gnome 3 via gnome3 ppa for Ubuntu. I've tried installing and adding the folders I wanted using samba configuration tool and gadmin-samba tools. I've also installed just about anything that could potentially have anything to do with file sharing from synaptic including:
samba, nautilus-share, smbclient, windbind
and whole lot of other stuff in hope that I had just been missing stuff. I also booted my laptop which is running 11.04 with Unity and I right clicked and selected "Sharing Options" like the usual way and shared a folder and then installed gadmin-samba and the samba configuration tools and the folder I shared wasn't included there. Meaning it isn't using the same thing? Also the only thing installed when shareing a folder is samba and some libpam-something. Two files! Then shares perfectly! Why is it so difficult to set up a simple share with Gnome 3? No matter what I do I boot into Windows on my laptop and try to connect to my network share the same way I always have and it doesn't work.

My wife has a laptop that runs Vista, and when i use my Vista she can see my files and I share this hard drive with her, but when i run Ubuntu she cant see this drive, i have extrernal hard drive as my backup with lot of different files on it and she can pull files from it but when i use Ubuntu she can see on her Vista Network, how can i make so when i use Ubuntu she can see my drive? have a home network with two desktops and I also have a netbook. The netbook and nettop (desktop) both run UNR 9.10 and my other desktop runs Ubuntu 9.10 with all updates in place. So all 3 machines are hooked up to my home network via wireless router (secure and password protect). I want to set up file shares between machines in order to move files between machines and also to have all machines connected to and accessing one shared printer. Fair enough. According to Ubuntu help I click on a folder, then properties then the share tab and click all checkboxes and give the share a name. Then I do likewise on my two other machines. So in theory once every machine has a share setup then you should be able to access via the other machines by simply going into Network, finding the machine, opening it and mounting the shared folder. In some cases I see the other machines but when I click to open them it says "unable to mount location". So now I would like to ask... where should I look to resolve this? The wireless router settings? Some type of network or security settings on each of my machines?

To save money I would like to be able to use some of these cheap bargain basement netbooks/tablets that are coming out as solely a viewing computer.
