Ubuntu Networking :: Build The GPL Firmware For The WRT160N?

May 9, 2010

Here's a quick write-up of the steps I took to build the GPL firmware for the WRT160N, the errors I received, and the steps to fix. This was on a fresh install (VM) of Ubuntu 9.10.

1) Download source tarball from LinkSys GPL Code Center

2) Unpack (tar -xvf)

3) Copy the Toolchain to the /opt/ directory (per the Readme)
# sudo -s
# mkdir /opt/brcm
# cp -r ~/wrt160n.../tools/brcm/* /opt/brcm/
# exit <Note: I had to exit sudo to avoid some permission conflicts later on>
4) Build:
# cd ~/wrt160n.../release/src/# make

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 Studio Build Service - Kernel Firmware

May 10, 2011

I'm in the process of making my own build using SUSE Studio build service. I was hoping if someone would kindly tell me about kernel-firmware, what it does and if it is absolutely necessary because I noticed that it is not selected for you by default. Any other useful firmware that I may need. I have already included the b43-firmware, ar9170-firmware, bluez-firmware, and ivtv-firmware in my build based on openSUSE 11.4.

Ubuntu :: Windows Driver Firmware - Error "Wireless Connection (Firmware Missing)"

Jun 4, 2011

after installing Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04, I'm experiencing tons and tons of complications with the wireless Internet connection. I have solved most of them. Now I have only one thing left. When I hit the drop-down menu for wireless connections, it says "Wireless connection (Firmware missing)"

I have installed the driver for my wireless card but what is the firmware? I honestly don't know what it is although it's very basic. I have a Broadcom 43xx as my wireless card (specifically 4306). How do I get the firmware for it? Do I find it in Windows? Also I cannot get b43-fwcutter because I have absolutely to Internet connection on Ubuntu. To post this, I'm using Windows.

Ubuntu Networking :: Install Drivers/firmware Because Presumably There Is No Out Of The Box Support

Sep 16, 2010

I'm a first time user of ubuntu and any other form of Linux. I decided to install ubuntu on an old Dell Latitude D600. The LAN controller is a Broadcom BCM4306 [14e4;4320] (rev 02). I honestly thought that once I installed ubuntu I would have no problem connecting to my wireless router. I was wrong.

A FAQ on this forum states that I need to install drivers/firmware because presumably there is no out of the box support. I read the FAQ [URL]..Debian and it seems that I need to get the driver/firmware then issue some command to put it where it needs to go.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Download Firmware For Wireless (Also Works For 10.10 And 10.04)

Oct 24, 2010

Problem in Natty Narwhal - 11.04 with the Broadband 43xx Wireless Card: Unable to download firmware for wireless. (Also works for 10.10 and 10.04) From the 'Additional Drivers' section: Quote:

This package contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver for use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4313-, BCM4321-,BCM4322-, BCM43224-, and BCM43225-, BCM43227- and BCM43228-basedhardware. Possible Solutions: Solution 1: System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager > Search: firmware-b43-lpphy-installer > Click Mark > Click install > Close

Kontza found the solution (post #3), so thank him for it. This solution fixed this problem on my Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Broadcom 4312 card. (Card Tech Specs: 0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)) Solution 2: Another option is here. Update: The Live USB of Natty Narwhal (11.04) automatically detected that I needed the STA driver. After installing it and rebooting, the wireless worked. (No cable was needed for this.) Update 2: After installing with the alternate cd, I needed a cable and after updating, I was able to download the STA driver through the 'Additional Drivers' section.

Ubuntu Networking :: Perplexed Linksys WPC54G - Firmware Is Missing ?

After the install I got a notification of an update which downloaded the appropriate software for the above wireless card. Worked like a charm. Today I installed 11.04 and zilch. No wireless. Supposedly the firmware is missing. I guess my question is why is something that worked well in the past now missing?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Device Not Ready - Firmware Missing

Jul 23, 2011

I thought I'd give Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal??) a try on an old Dell Latitude D600 I had lying around. Install went great. Everything seems to run nice and slick.. except one thing.. the wireless is giving me the old "Device not ready (firmware missing)" So I can only use my lappy on a leash.

It's a pretty common Broadcom NIC... and I've tried running the System / Administration / Additional Drivers and nothing comes up.

It seems to me I need a driver someplace...I don't know where or how to get it installed.

General :: Drivers / Firmware For Wireless Networking?

Dec 5, 2010

I have a Live minimal install Gentoo CD that was made from a downloaded ISO that does not contain the drivers/firmware for my wireless networking card in my laptop. So I unpacked the ISO image and un-squashed the squashfs and added two folders that contained the firmware in the /lib/firmware directory. Then I squashed the file system back the way it was (squashfs), and re-created the ISO again. Then I burned the ISO to an image on a blank CD but when I tried to boot from the new CD, the CD was ignored and the laptop went directly to the hard drive for booting. So the live CD is no longer a bootable CD. I can't even tell if the firmware will work because the CD is not detected at POST. The BIOS is set to boot from a CD before it pages the hard drive. The original CD booted fine before I made the modifications to it. I compared the contents of the original CD to the one I modified and everything is identical. What did I do wrong.

Fedora Networking :: Replacing The Linksys WRT54G Firmware?

Apr 7, 2009

I just installed Cable internet in my apartment. Part of the deal was a free Router (a Belkin). Now I already had a router so now I have an extra, and I remembered something I wanted to try If I ever got an extra router.... I read somewhere, that you can replace the firmware of the Linksys WRT54G Router/Switch with a Linux-based firmware.

I want to try this, but I have some concerns. I'm worried about losing my WPA2 Encryption, and connection problems; I have two Linux laptops (Ubuntu, and Fedora 64 bit) which connect Wirelessly, a desktop w/ 64 Bit Fedora 10, and two Vista Desktops that connect via Ethernet. Will the multiple Operating Systems cause a problem?

Networking :: Port Forwarding - Trendnet TEW-652BRP To DD-WRT Firmware Update

Feb 26, 2011

I have a Trendnet TEW652BRP wireless router, HW/ V2.1R, FW/ V2.00b34. I have read that these routers had a problem, with the stock firmware, where port forwarding was concerned. And indeed, I do have some problems with it. Ie; canyouseeme.org can't see me when I open ports, and I am not on a proxy server. I have tried this with the appropriate exception rules (in/out) in ufw, and on the router settings with UPnP enabled and disabled. In the latter case, I also tried router firewall rules, port forwarding and access rules. Still could not see me (timed out in all cases).

Now, this being an area I have little experience with, I am not sure if this version of firmware was supposed to have fixed the PF problems. To the questions...

1. Has anyone here who had an analogous experience found a solution, with the stock firmware?

2. I have read about the DD-WRT option to flash the router firmware (which says fixes the issue), but I am wary. I believe this is a Linux based replacement firmware, which is not a bad thing in my book, but does anyone have any recommendations or heads up on issues with it, from experience, apart from what is commented in the documentation at [URL]

Networking :: Port Forwarding - Router - Ssh Requests Time Out - Tomato Firmware

May 18, 2010

I've managed to confirm that I can reach my home network via ssh from a remote location through my SMC Barricade when it is directly connected to the desktop machine but when the second router is put back into the chain ssh requests time out. The second router is a Linksys WRT 54GL running the Tomato firmware. The chain looks like this: ISP's router (bridged) --> Barricade -->WRT54GL-->desktop

The Barricade has port 22 forwarded to the Linksys' WAN address and it in turn forwards to the desktop address. It appears that it is a setting on the Linksys firmware that is preventing the remote connection. I've looked through the various settings many times but cannot see anything that would cause the problem.
