View 1 RepliesI have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.
The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. The contents of ifconfig are:

If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.
I had some problems installing 10.04, which I'm not going into here unless I have to, but it appears to be up and running now except my PC can't access the network, even though it's wired. This is the first time I've tried putting on a new build by myself as my son always used to do it (my PC used to belong to him many years ago, and is old, like me.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI cant get my wired internet connection to work. The command 'dpkg -s pppoeconf' returns ' installed ok installed'. My connection is through a router which is probably in a semi-bridge mode and I need to dial a connection to get the net started. The connection Auto eth0 is setup properly with the correct cloned MAC Address (that of my laptop).
I've also executed 'sudo pppoeconf' and ran the whole series of steps which towards the end said that my connection will be set on boot. However, the net doesnt work directly and I dont know how to dial manually either. 'sudo ifup eth0' returns 'interface eth0 already configured'. I tried some 10-15 threads but none worked. Ubuntu is handicapped without internet.
I have two PCs one has Windows XP the other has Ubuntu 9.10 on it, the Windows PC has no problems getting on the Internet (I'm posting this with it) and getting an IP address from the wired router. The wired router I have is ONLY wired it does not have wireless at all, it is currently setup to hand out IP addresses between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254.
The Ubunutu 9.10 PC worked great last night surfed all over the place for hours, then finally shut it down last night when I went to bed, shut down appeared to be normal like it always does when it shuts down, then this morning when I booted it up it gave error: "WIRED NETWORK - disconnected you are now offline".

View 6 Replies View RelatedOkay, a couple of weeks ago I was running 10.04, got an auto update that needed a firefox restart, so rather than restart, I just shutdown the computer for the weekend. When I booted the computer on Monday it would find sites (www.google.com, start.ubuntu.com) but it wouldn't download the necessary items to load the page. Now I have a windows laptop sitting next to the ubuntu box and it was online with no issues, so I know it wasn't the connection itself. So I decided that the update messed up the system so I downloaded 10.10 and installed that and ran that all last week.
On Friday I got a system update that required a firefox restart, so I ran firefox for the day and decided that since it was friday, I would just shutdown the computer and reboot on Monday.Well now Monday is here and now I again have sloooowww internet, to the point that URL.. times out and won't come up. I have tried doing a traceroute on both machines and the windows box gets all the way to www.google.com, but the ubuntu box gets about halfway there and then gets no response. I am at a loss, I don't want to reinstall every week. I did try to reboot and run the previous version of 10.10 that shows in the boot menu, but that does the same thing. One thing I did notice is that the broadcast ip is different than the machine IP, don't know enough to know if this is a problem.
I am unable to get my wired network connection to work. My laptop sees the wired connection, but will not connect. I am running 10.04 on aLenovo T400 with 3 gb of ram.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.04, complete noob, but I can't connect to the internet. I connect the ethernet cable, select auto ethernet and the icon animates for about 30 seconds. But then I get a notification "Wired network Disconnected - you are now offline".
Don't know what other information I should provide. I tried a few things from different posts like editing the dhcpclient.config but don't really know what I'm doing and none of these worked anyways. I'm not even sure if they were solutions to a similar problem! I'm using the same connection on my Mac OS 10.4.11 (different machine) and I have no problems. Could I use these same settiings in Ubuntu? I don't know what the different fields represent or what I should input in manual settings.
So, when I booted up, the wired connection was automatically detected and in use. Whenever I suspend my computer and then resume it later I lose the wired connection. It is detected (seen) by Networkmanager, but I can never connect. I found a way to restore the connection, but it is manual and I was wondering if I could automate this process every time I resume. After I updated ubuntu 10.04.3 and restarted my PC, something weired happend and my wired connection was completely lost. I tried different things but it seems that I have lost my ethernet connection. I only have ethernet card and the interface was set to eth0 which is not recognized anymore.

I installed Lucid a week ago and have been having a blast with it after a two year break from Ubuntu (been using Mandriva). So the other day I went to hibernate the system and it froze. I naturally did a hard reset and when I log back in, no network connection. That is to say, the system tray says it's connected but there is no LAN light on the router or network card. ifconfig shows it's connected too. When I boot into XP (cringes) it works just fine.
No specifics ATM but the card is a D-Link PCI with a Realtek R8***** chipset

I keep losing internet connectivity from within OpenSuse. I've had ubuntu/kubuntu beforeand never had a problem. I installed opensuse and now after a few minutes of browsing I'll lose my internet connection.I also dual boot into winXP without any problems.I noticed that when the connection is lost I can't even reach my router - which is where I'm getting the wired connection from.So it's not just the outside internet but the local network too. It only happens within opensuse.
I have just done a new install of the latest opensuse 32bit and for some reason I cannot connect to the internet, when I click on mange connections the vpn tag is highlighted and all the other tabs are grayed out and I cannot select them. So I can't setup a internet connection wired or wireless. I was just using Kubuntu and did not have this problem. My card is broadcom.

I connect to the network/Internet using Wired ethernet (TCP/IP) with static IP. Everytime I reboot/restart my network configurations are lost and I have to re-configure. I have googled this problem and have seen a few posts/bugs in launchpad etc. for what appears to be the same issue...but unfortunately I am not getting a clear solution to this problem.

I played with the Network Settings section in YaST, because I wanted to use the wireless network card I installed into the PCI port. OpenSUSE recognised the type of card and its MAC number, and told me that I needed to install a firmware (fwcutter something). I tried some changes on the cable internet connection (like activate on plugged) while I tried to change the wireless connection (like activate on boot).
What I have now is that my cable internet connection is not working at all (it was working just 3 days ago), my wireless internet connection is, as always, not working either. I managed to work the wireless card on Windows XP by finding its drivers.
Since the problem is with my office computer, I cannot answer the exact brand names of the ethernet card and wireless card. Shall I reinstall OpenSUSE 11.3 from the DVD I have?
Second problem: OpenSUSE does not recognise my external harddisk, it gives an error about mounting the device.
When I unplug the ethernet cable from this laptop and plug into my Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop I get a wired connection automatically but I have no internet connection in Mozilla

To be able to connect to the internet I have to enter my MAC address, 2 IPs, netmask and 2 DNS address. When I try to edit the default internet connection eth0 with my correct information, the minute I enter my MAC address and save the changes the network manager creates new internet connection with wrong data and use it instead! I can't select the correct internet connection from the top bar where the internet icon is, because it is just not there. The only connection that I can choice is the new default one with the wrong data! If I try to create new separate internet connection with my correct data the same thing happens! The moment I enter my MAC address and save it, the internet connection disapears from the list of internet connections in the internet area in the top bar and I can't select it. This time with a fresh install from disk the network manager does not see any connections. How can I get the manager to recognise the network and connect to the net?
I realise that it would help if I posted up the output of some commands in a terminal but I am writing this on my phone and can not cut and paste large chunks of text. I can only hope for some advice until I can get to a computer with a working connection.

I have an old Compaq Presario v2000 that recently had Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it. The wired internet worked when it was installed, but the wireless didn't. I tried to download the drivers for it and it failed everytime. I did an update thinking that the update might fix the wireless, but it didn't, it actually made my wired connection stop working. So now I have a newly installed OS on the laptop, and I can't do anything on it because there is no way to get any internet.

My only problem (at the moment) is that my wired internet connection is not recognized within the operating system, yet while I was downloading/installing Ubuntu it had no problem finding and using the connection then. When I boot into Windows 7 or plug the ethernet cable into my Mac, the connection is established immediately, and no need for manual entering of anything because everything is auto-detected. The really strange thing is I've run Ubuntu off a USB stick and when booting off that the wired connection was immediately recognized after startup.

I have "half-way" connectivity, meaning that I can see (and connect to) my home wireless network but I can't connect to the internet (unless I use the wired connection). I have installed NDIS wrapper - no change
For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.
Ever since my BT Hub 2 has updated a few weeks ago I'm unable to connect to the internet either wireless or wired. I duel boot on my netbook with xp and duel boot my desktop PC with windows 7. None of the Ubuntu�s are able to connect, I have no problems with the windows side of things.
Has anyone any ideas on how to fix this until BT decide to fix the problem. Preferably a step to step guide as I have limited experience with Ubuntu. I�m using Ubuntu 11.04.
