Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network Stops Working After A While?

Sep 1, 2011

I have a wireless network using this driver:

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:8187 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter

and everything works fine for some time. After a few hours or maybe less (if I push bandwidth to the limit) the Internet freezes. I can't even ping my router. If I disconnect and reconnect either the device or the connection via network manager , it does work for a minute only and then freezes again. If I restart Ubuntu entirely, it works again. But for a while...

It works 100% in Win7 and I have no problem at all there. But I am very annoyed that I cant have reliability in Ubuntu. I want Ubuntu as default.

It has something to do with drivers or an inner variable or buffer or something.

At least, is there any way to reset my network connection without rebooting the OS?

I tried sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart but it gives me: Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Suddenly No Wireless Network Card

May 5, 2010

I am running SLED 11 and My Networkcard is Intel PRO/Wireless 5300. In short, it is not there anymore! I mean I was connected and everything and the next time I restarted It could not detect any wireless network. I deleted the wireless network card in hopes that the OS will automatically detect it on startup and set it right but NOPE. When I check the hardware information in YAST, it is listed there and it is also working under Windows.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Suddenly Cannot Access Network

May 25, 2011

Today I changed my home router's security setting from WPA to WPA2, and my openSUSE 11.4 Tumbleweed system's network stopped working. It is very strange, because it can connect to the wireless no problem and it gets ip address and everything, but I cannot access any websites. I tried to revert the router setting back to WPA, but still the same.Funny thing is I can actually open the router admin page.

Even I plugged the wired lan cable to my laptop, but still the same. It connects, but no internet.Where should I look? My the other laptop with openSUSE 11.4 connects to the same router without any problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Intel 5100 WiFi Card - Dell Latitude E6400 - Suddenly WiFi LED On The Computer Stops Blinking

May 4, 2011

I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.

What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.

On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

My exact hardware:

General :: Finding A Traffic Monitor That Only Counts In A Specific Wireless Network

Jul 28, 2011

I need a simple traffic monitor for Linux, that counts the traffic in a specific wireless network because I have volume restrictions on that one.I tried it using the following iptables rule:

[code]...

iptables -m mac -A INPUT -p all --mac-source <mac-address> ! -s 10.0.0.0/8

where <mac-address> is the router's one. 10.0.0.0/8 is the local subnet. What I actually want is something like --routed-through <mac-address>. Also, is there some way to gather iptables's statistics? Or is there maybe another tool that does what I want (reliable)?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Starts And Stops And Starts And Stops?

Feb 10, 2010

Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection. It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Suddenly Not Working?

Apr 21, 2011

I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) x64 quite happily on my Dell e6500 for the past few months until today when I woke the computer up from sleep mode and could not use the wireless. The network-manager applet simply has 'Wireless' greyed out. I tried rebooting, thinking it was an issue with the wireless card not re-powering on properly after sleep, but to no avail. how to begin here?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Suddenly Stops Working?

Feb 5, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP dc5100MT workstation. Sound works nearly all the time, but once in a while, the sound stops and I have no idea why. The channel is not muted, the volume is 100%, and not even rebooting fixes it. It will just start working on its own.Under the Sound Preferences panel, the output volume is 100%. The channel is not muted. I can get sound out of the internal speaker by changing the connector to "Analog Output (LFE) / No Amplifier", but not out of the "Analog Output / Amplifier" which is the green sound cable plugged into the sound card.I only use this machine as a video player using VLCNothing else.I would like to know some tricks to isolate and troubleshoot this when it happens.

Debian Configuration :: Wireless Stops Connecting After Update To Network Manager

Mar 30, 2011

I am currently using Debian Testing, managing my wireless connection with NetworkManager and the Gnome nm-applet. Both have just been updated: network-manager from 0.8.1-6+squeeze1 to 0.8.2-6 and network-manager-gnome from 0.8.1-2 to 0.8.2-4.On installation of the new packages, I have no problems. However, on a reboot, I can no-longer connect to any wireless connection. I am not prompted on start-up for the password to unlock the Gnome keyring and when I left-click on the nm-applet icon and then click on a network to connect to it, nothing happens.I do not think this is a driver or NetworkManager daemon problem. If I run "nmcli dev wifi" or left-click on the applet icon, NetworkManager seems to scan for wireless networks properly and returns a list including the one I wish to connect to.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Suddenly Not Working/detected?

Mar 21, 2010

I am running Karmic on a Compaq Presario V3000 and this morning my wireless card is not being detected by Ubuntu's NetworkManager. I have no idea what caused this... literally, it was working when I shutdown my laptop last night. When I right-click the NetworkManager icon in the panel it does not show "Enable Wireless" (only "Enable Networking"). When I run ifconfig in terminal it shows my wireless card as being there (UP Broadcast Multicast). One weird thing - on the front of the laptop there is an LED which lights up blue when the card is working (ie normally), but right now it is orange (ie, if you flick the switch on the front of the laptop to toggle the wifi on or off... I have toggled it back and forth but nothing changes!)

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Suddenly Stopped Working?

Jul 24, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I was happily connected to internet and surfing some forum, when wireless connection suddenly stopped working.

Now I can't find any access point, and I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything to justify this behaviour.

It already happened a month ago, but I had to format my drive, so I didn't really bother to try to solve the problem.

Anyway. I'm posting here the results of the commands I think I can help with a diagnosis; if something else is needed.

I'm using a different computer to post this thread, so I'm manually writing the output.

Code:
sudo iwconfig wlan0
wlan 0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID: off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 No scan results

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - Wireless Suddenly Stopped Working

Apr 18, 2011

I'm running a gateway lapbook w/10.04 LTS and an etheros wirless card. Card has been working fine for almost a year - from cold boot, warm boot, and recovery from standy (shut lid, open, press power button). I was fiddling with setting a static IP for the wirelss card by modifying the interfaces text file. I made some changes, and restored the file to its original contents after some noodling around. Wireless still worked fine after that. Last night I took the laptop out of suspend as usual - lifted lid, pressed power button - but the wireless indicator remained grayed out and I haven't been able to reenable wireless connectivity since. ifconfig shows the wireless card is there, and cabling the e-net port directly to my hub works fine.

Ubuntu :: Thunderbird Suddenly Stops Downloading Messages For An Account?

Apr 13, 2011

(Ubuntu LTS 10.4) I have multiple mail accounts on Thunderbird (TB). All worked fine with no issues whatsoever. A few months ago it suddenly started giving me this alert message related to my yahoo.fr pop3 account

Quote:

The POP3 mail server (pop.mail.yahoo.fr) does not support UIDL or XTND XLST, which are required to implement the ``Leave on Server'', ``Maximum Message Size'' or ``Fetch Headers Only'' options. To download your mail, turn off these options in the Server Settings for your mail server in the Account Settings window.

Obviously I checked if these settings were somehow changed. They weren't. It should leave messages on the server indeed, but I don't use no max message size or fetch headers only options. The original settings are what they used to be and how they have always worked.

The thing is: everything works normal if I start up TB. It downloads the messages, puts them in the folders where I want them to come etc... The problem seems to appear after a while (mostly a few hours, or overnight). It just stops downloading the messages from my yahoo.fr account. When I click the Get Mail for my yahoo account the above alert message pops up.

There is only one solution really. Close TB and restart it after which all works fine again.

It might be that the problem is related to another issue reported as bug # 689453 in launchpad that started around the same time (a few months ago). That bug forces me to have to end the process through the System Monitor where Thunderbird-bin uses almost 100% of the CPU and doesn't shut down.

Obviously it doesn't avoid me from using TB, but it starts to work on my nerves to have to close down TB (sometimes through the End Process in system monitor) and then restart it so frequently.

Ubuntu Networking :: Second NIC (Wireless) Not Taking Any Internet Traffic

Feb 8, 2011

The LAN connection gets it's internet from my LAPTOP with a Clear 4G module. I have a very strong wireless connection, but when I remove the LAPTOP from the network, I get nothing on my Ubuntu computer here, even though I have a solid connection. What is needed in the config to let the wireless run in the "back up" internet connection mode?

My laptop froze around noon, and I was forced to do a hard reboot. After restarting, the Network Manager will not connect to any wireless networks, which are visible. Wired connections work fine. Ubuntu Networking :: Suddenly Unable To See Network Shares

Dec 21, 2010

I have three computers on the network, one is using Windows Vista, one is in an office room using Ubuntu 10.10, and one is in the living room using Ubuntu 10.10. All three computers have folders shared, and were all three reading files just fine with one another for a couple of months. To share the folders, I just right clicked on them, selected sharing options, and checked the boxes for "share this folder" and "guest access". Both Ubuntu computers have samba installed and configured so the Vista computer can see their shares. Tonight, the Ubuntu computer in the living room stopped being able to see the other computers under places -> network. The other Ubuntu computer and Vista computer can still see each other's shares just fine.

I also created a test share folder with a file in it on the living room Ubuntu computer, and it can be seen by the other Ubuntu computer. I can ping the computer in the living room, and the computer in the living room can ping the other two computers. I set a static IP address on the Ubuntu computer in the living room to rule out an IP address conflict. Under network, if I go to "go -> location..." I'm not quite sure what to type in there to find other computers. Under places -> network, the only thing that comes up on the Ubuntu computer in the living room is it's own shares. I tried using the search feature, but was unable to come up with anything resembling my particular problem within a reasonable amount of time.
