Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network Stops Working After A While?
Sep 1, 2011
I have a wireless network using this driver:
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:8187 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
and everything works fine for some time. After a few hours or maybe less (if I push bandwidth to the limit) the Internet freezes. I can't even ping my router. If I disconnect and reconnect either the device or the connection via network manager , it does work for a minute only and then freezes again. If I restart Ubuntu entirely, it works again. But for a while...
It works 100% in Win7 and I have no problem at all there. But I am very annoyed that I cant have reliability in Ubuntu. I want Ubuntu as default.
It has something to do with drivers or an inner variable or buffer or something.
At least, is there any way to reset my network connection without rebooting the OS?
I tried sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart but it gives me: Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.

I have one major problem that is going to cause me to switch back to windows. My wireless network shows connected and works fine for a while but periodically stops working. It always says it is connected but sometimes stops working to where I have to disconnect and reconnect for it to start back up again.

I'm having some problems with wireless, it works fine on boot but after a while pretty much randomly, it can be a few days or it can be a few hours, it stops working. I'm not sure which command would tell you what and it would take a little while to debug it because like I said it's random, but if anyone knows what to do please tell me! I'm on Lucid Lynx 10.04.Another something that's really bothering me (But not related to wireless) is that for some reason when I restart my computer, the top panel keeps changing the applets locations.

This should be easy for the Ubuntu Gods to sort out:
I have a Sabrent USB 802.11N adapter. (I am using 64-bit Ubuntu in all below)
I plug it into a 9.04 box and it works fine. Plug it into a 9.10 box. Network manager sees it and can attach to the network, but has 0% signal strength, no internet.
Rebuild the 9.04 box with a fresh install to 9.10. 0% signal, no internet. Try 10.04 Alpha 2, 0% signal strength, no internet.
Rebuild same box down to 9.04. Works perfectly. 100% signal strength. I do all updates and then the upgrade to 9.10 using the USB. Everything works fine until the reboot. Then, USB connects, but 0% signal strength, no internet. Oh! ifconfig says the wlan0 interface is up, but it has a random ip address.
I don't mind using 9.04 because for the forseeable future, the box is just going to count aliens for Seti, but my wife wants it off the counter and I would like to upgrade someday.

I have a problem with my wireless connection in ubuntu (natty with amd64bit) There seems to be intermittent disruption in my connection. Havent seen a pattern as yet, though it happens once a day. After that I cant get it to work at all and only restarting + reconnecting the USB device helps. Dont know what is going on.I have already read these pages : Commands and Wireless Troubleshooting. Here is my line of though1) Given that I am able to connect other devices to it while I am not able to connect through this desktop, I think the router is OK.2) I am able to work with it after restart + re-connection . And so the driver is OK and is loaded. The driver seems to be oK and loaded even while I am not able to connect. So why is this happening and how can I get this under control without having to reboot and re-connect the device everytime. Here are the output for the commands which will give you a more detailed idea of the process. Before reboot while I was not able to connect:
Code:
Script started on Tue 23 Aug 2011 01:40:08 PM CDT
raja@UshRaj: ~raja@UshRaj:~$ sudo nm-tool

My Acer's Wireless randomly stops working until you fully shut down and start the computer.(Not Restart but Shutdown->Powebutton) I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid.
I am wondering if anyone knows why it would stop working properly, and/or how to fix it?
And since this is a off and on problem I might not be able to provide details immediately from time of crash, since I need my computer on the wireless.
One symptom that really stands out is that the cooling fan is spinning as fast as it possibly can and processor usage is spiking around 80/200 on a process called phy0.(relevancy unknown)
As I was typing this post on my other computer, my laptop crashed and I lost the lshw -C Network output I had. If asked to, I will post the one from when it is working. Also I will post any other info you need from when I can.

I'm running a Source Dedicated Server on my Ubuntu laptop, and to connect to it via external IP from other computers in the network I need to enable loopback in my router. This was working fine, but then I disconnected my laptop for a few days, and when I came back the wireless stopped working on my Xbox. I reset the router to factory defaults, and then setup everything again. It was all working fine until I enabled loopback again and power cycled my router. Now every time I do that, the internet on Ubuntu stops working and the wireless on the Xbox stops working.
Edit: You can ignore this I guess. It seems I was actually DISABLING loopback by enabling that router option, which I guess caused this. Strange, because the first time enabling this option was the only way to get my external ip to work. Oh well, everything is fine now.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.
3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything. That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet. Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?

I have a Dell E6500 with and Intel 5300 wireless agn card running Lucid x64. Wireless works fine and speeds are great except when I download with either the browser or thru a torrent or even updates. Once I get to around 100 megs in to the file wireless stops working and the only way to get it working again is to disconnect and reconnect to the AP. I have installed the back ports and tried several other fixed to get this to work but nothing has helped. One more note this happens on 2 other wireless routers that I have tried so I know that it's not limited to my Linksys.

My wireless LAN connection on this machine occasionally stops working. The network traffic bar shows periodic very small transmissions but the failure of all network dependent applications (Firefox, package manager, etc.) indicates to me that the machine is no longer talking to the net. I can fix it by reselecting my home network in nm-applet from the drop-down list. This causes the machine to disconect, reconnect and all is well for some random period of time thereafter. Here's some data:I'm running an HP Pavillion laptop.
Code:
~$ lspci | grep Wireless
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
Code:
~$ lsmod | grep iwl
iwlagn 124768 0
iwlcore 134820 1 iwlagn
mac80211 243496 2 iwlagn,iwlcore
[code]....
I don't know if this is related or not, but a couple of months ago I unsuccessfully attempted to share a hotel's wired Internet connection over my wireless card. I may have hosed some settings or it could be unrelated. The "unknown interface" portion of the restart attempt is interesting but I don't know enough to fix it.

I'm using a Vaio TT, which seems to use an Intel 5100 WiFi chipset, and a Linksys WRT54G2 (firmwares 1.0.1 and 1.0.4), ubuntus 10.10 and 10.04.
Wifi works fine out of the box. However if the other vaio tt in our office (running windows 7) comes online, my laptop stops being able to make new connections. It WILL stay connected to chat servers, and downloads SOMETIMES continue to work. However all new HTTP requests / ssh connections / rdp connections / pings fail. The laptop still appears to be "connected" to the wifi network.
This may also happen after an undetermined amount of time without the extra vaio. It is not solved by reconnecting or rebooting. Once the extra vaio leaves the building, everything works fine again. This problem does not happen at all if I boot into windows.

I'm having a bizarre problem where my network connection stops working randomly. At first I thought it was a DNS issue since Firefox simply chilled out on "Looking up [hostname]" until it timed out, but after further investigation (pinging IP's, "host" and "dig" being unable to reach servers) it became apparent that I couldn't even access the DNS servers i.e. the Wicked Connection of the East was most sincerely dead.
There are two strange things about this: one, there are no errors except "timeout". The network manager is happy, Firefox is happy until the lookup fails... Two, the failures only start *after* DHCP configuration. DHCP configuration never has any trouble sending or receiving packets. I'm going to try static IP and whatnot to see if that helps, more information later.

I'm using Fedora 14, 64-bit. My wi-fi adapter is Intel 5100 AGN on a Lenovo laptop. The wi-fi router is Zyxel. From time to time, I'm getting a black message, that a kernel component has crashed (or something similar). Here are the error details:
Package: kernel
Latest Crash:Sun 20 Feb 2011 04:27:54 PM
Command: not_applicable
Reason: WARNING: at net/wireless/core.c:633 wdev_cleanup_work+0x52/0xbd [cfg80211]()
Comment: None
Bug Reports:
In most cases, after that, I'm loosing the internet connection. I can't open any website, can't ping the router (which is my default gateway) and now it happened even without any error, which really pissed me off. Logging out and back in doesn't help, I need to make a full reboot to get back my internet connection.
Under Windows 7 everything is working fine and I'm not having any trouble with the internet connectivity! I had Fedora 11 32-bit before and it was also working normally!

Initially it was working fine after fedora 15 install. However recently it simply stops responding after a period of time. After reboot, sometimes it does repair itself but again stops working after some time.I'm not aware of any package updateperformed or configuration change that would have impacted it.And it does work intermittently as mentioned above

I just recently erased my hard drive and installed ubuntu 9.10 all over again. I updated as expected and everything was going well, until, my internet stopped working after maybe 40 mins or so after a successful boot. Now this same thing happens every 40 mins and I have to reboot the computer by forcing my laptop to shut down by holding down the power button. This also made me aware of another problem when restarting or logging off my laptop. The laptop hangs at that terminal-syled screen and the underscore blinks and fails to shut the computer down/log off. I resort to holding down the power button to restart. I am using a wireless connection with WEP key protection.
Atheros network chip
Laptop Acer Aspire 5532
It just happened again..... I am typing now in tomboy notes....
Time to restart again......
I also try to open terminal and it fails to function (after the internet stop working), any reason for that? I would also like to note that the signal strength decreases as time passes by.......

this is with both network manager and WICD, a problem i've had since i got ubuntu - multiple wipes and reinstalls the wifi is supported out of the box, the problem i've randomly run into since installing is, it will randomly stop detecting networks "no networks detected"
i've noticed over time as this as been happening, that it usually happens whenever there is a high load - multiple videos going on multiple tabs, videos queued up etc. its never happened during regular browsing - theres always a lot going on when it happens, almost like it collapses. the only way to fix this, is to quit the manager - shut off the computer (restarting doesnt work) and then it comes back after

Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection. It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

I just finished upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 via the Update Manager. My first noticeable problem is that my wireless connection with my home network no longer functions on my IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop. The Network Manager applet shows that it detects my home network (and those of several of my neighbors), but I have not been able to get it to connect to this network. I've been using WPA & WPA2 Personal settings for security, and the Network Manager applet had correctly picked up the password that I had been using under 9.10. I've searched the Ubuntu Forums for "wireless T42" and thought I'd found a solution in a posting that recommended using the "wcid" network manager, but I've been unable to find wcid either via the Synaptic Package Manager or the Ubuntu Software Center.
1. I've noticed that in Lucid Lynx the Network Manager applet's icon in the top panel is no longer the vertical bars symbol that it displayed in
Karmic Koala; instead, the icon is a radiating fan display. In the Network Manager's edit Network Connections window, this fan icon is shown on the Wireless Connection tab, while the vertical bars icon is shown on the Mobile Broadband tab.
2. The Wireless Connection tab shows, on the line in which it shows awareness of my home wireless network (as "Auto 389690") that this connection was "Last Used" "1 month ago". It should be saying something like "today".
FWIW, the Network Manager detected my wired "eth0" connection with no difficulty. Both Jaunty and Karmic picked up my home wireless connection without any problems. Now I have no idea what to try next.

It still works fine if I boot into "good old" Windows. I must say I am SOOO disapointed with the Network Manager in Ubuntu which was great until 10.4 and has been crap ever since. I have had so many problems with my Vodafone USB and had to find an alternative method of getting it to work. Now the last straw is that my wireless LAN card is not getting recognised on startup so I have not connectivity when at home. (USb via Vodafone is no good in my area). I am typing this via an old Windows PC because my Ubuntu just does not work anymore. I have not installed anything new so what has happened - or how can I get it to work again.
I was completely sold on Ubuntu but am now considering reverting to Windows. It would be worth paying for an operating system that actually works, even if I have all the other hassles as well. A year ago Ubuntu was great - it all worked ! Not any more how can all that good work have gone down the pan - I can't understand how anyone could let all these nertwork problems occur - it isn't just me - read the threads - it's widespread.

I'm not a total newbie, but run into some strange problems with my installation of Lucid.Everything was working fine yesterday. I shut down the laptop and powered it up this morning and had problems with network. I have two NICs (wired and wireless). Both are set to pick up IP settings from DHCP and both do, however when using wired network I can't communicate with outside world - can't even ping the default gateway (but pinging 127.0.0.1 or IP address of the NIC no problem, so stack should be OK).When on the wireless network everything works fine (otherwise I would struggle to write this post ).What is very weird though is that I have a VMWare Player installed and using Windows VM on wired network works just great!
I noticed that when you're persistent it happens that you can ping but huge chunks of traffic are lost (e.g. packet 1-10 would pass, 11-40 would be lost, 41-59 would pass and so on).I restarted Ubuntu, tried shutting down interfaces, disabling networking and nothing helped. I don't recall performing any changes (at least that I would be aware of).Can anyone suggest something?BTW. This is not DNS issue as both IP addresses and FQDNs do not work. When I refer to using a given network (wired or wireless) the other one is down with ifconfig command...

I'm new to Ubuntu - I've decided to give Ubuntu Studio a go as an alternative to Windows. However, after installing it, neither of my network cards work. I have a Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG wireless card, and a Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Wired card. Neither work, And I'm not sure how to. I've tried searching, and have come up with the .tgz file here, but I have no idea what to do with it I'm concentrating on the wireless card for the moment, seeing as that will be the main one I use.
