I am completely new to Linux and have just installed Xubuntu on an old HP machine. Until I buy a long enough ethernet cord to reach my router upstairs, I would like to try to make use of a Linksys wireless USB network adapter that I have (WUSB11 ver. 2.. I looked around online and I got pretty confused. I don't know where to start.
View 7 RepliesI have installed Suse 11.4 from the Gnome liveCD, and I "can" access my home network when it is unsecured, however, I can't access it when WEP is turned on. Now, I know that WEP is insecure but there are devices on the network that only supports WEP so the router settings can't be changed. Also just for testing purposes i have tried the WPA2 encryption method to no avail (dmesg reports that the connection timed out). The only encryption method that looks promising is the open-wep encryption. When trying to connect to the network (with open-wep turned on) I have performed a bit of checking to see what is going on, now I don't know much about in-depth linux and stuff but, below are the outputs from lsusb, dmesg, iwconfig, and ifconfig.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my formerly XP system, and I'm trying to get my wireless network working. I have a Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 wireless adapter connected by USB to the system.
The system networking icon reports "No wired networks".
I'm not sure whether or not the system sees the USB ports... If so, it apparently doesn't recognize the adapter.
I saw a few posts that indicated that this adapter didn't work on 10.04 but it had worked on 9.04.
I'm looking for any info to get this working, including any or all of the following:
* How to determine if the system sees the USB ports (or is it "obvious" that it does)
* Should the wireless adapter work just by plugging it in?
* How to troubleshoot the networking adapter to get it working
* (If downgrading to 9.04 is likely to solve the problem) how to downgrade to 9.04 from 10.04...

I am using UBUNTU DESKTOP 64-bit (x86_64) 10.04, but I think it is not working in the 32-bit version as well.
I really love to get my Ubuntu work with my 64-bit hardware....
Previously I had my desktop hooked up to a nearby router via an ethernet cord with my parents' computer having a wireless usb adapter to connect (This thing: [uRL]). We just moved and our setup has reversed (router is near their computer, I am using the usb adapter). I just installed the latest Ubuntu and now I can't get the usb adapter to work. I'm very new to Linux and I have no idea what to do. I think this is the same usb adapter.

Read some threads which generally correspond to version 2 of the device.
It probably uses Ralink chipset(cmiiw). I neither have Rt73 nor prism2_usb installed, confirmed by lsmod.
I have a AE1000 wireless adapter and Ive been using it or about 4 months on windows xp. Yesterday I installed ubuntu 10.10 and it won't work It won't connect to the internet and won't even show signs that it is turned on.

I'm not a new user to ubuntu but I'm stuck with a driver issue on a wireless adapter upgrade for ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx. I'm running an acer aspire am1201-e1622a with amd athlon x2 64 bit processor, however i'm only running the 32 bit version of lucid lynx. The following are a few outputs of some commands that might assist in finding the proper driver. Before though i will tell you what i have done.
I have installed a few different drivers from windows wireless driver installer such as the xp and vista 32 and 64 bit versions with no success in the computer actually recognizing that i have a wireless adapter installed. The windows wireless driver installer said that hardware was present but i was unable to scan for networks or even see that i had a choice to do that. This meaning that it didn't show i had wireless capabilities in my network manager. i tested this with gnome network manager which is the default manager for 10.04 and also with wicd with no success.
Following these tests i attempted to install a driver from source following the instructions on another forum. This allowed me to manually turn on the wireless adapter but i was still unable to find any networks. This meaning that wicd was able to see that i had a wireless adapter installed but it for some reason was unable to see any wireless networks around. I'm 100% sure my router is in range and that it is configured correctly. I have 5 other computers connect to this router along with some of them being ubuntu.

I'm trying to install a Linksys WUSB600n dual-band USB wireless-N adapter onto a desktop system with opensuse 11.1 installed; this system will be migrating to a back porch with no cabling access, hence the wireless solution. Everything works fine under Windows XP, but on Linux, not so much. Hardware info is as follows; there is no "Wireless LAN" entry, but there is a USB entry:

I actually wasn't even trying to install the adapter which is the funny thing, I just finally got around to installing mandriva 2010 on my desktop and happened to have the adapter already hooked up to a usb port for my windows installation. When I got done with the installation to my amazement it got recognized and I didn't have to do a thing!
I looked into installing the adapter on my laptop which already had mandriva 2010 on it and gave up cause I didn't find any post's here that addressed the issue very well. Just thought I would pass it along for anyone who want's to try this on there computer.
I am trying to get my Linksys wireless adapter (WUSB11 V2.6) to work under kubuntu /ubuntu.
I am still not able to connect. I believe that I am overlooking or not understanding something.
This is a walk-through of steps I have taken. I can post log files or command outputs as needed.
lsusb shows my adapter, I checked at one point and saw the log file said it needed the firmware from at76c503a.berlios.de so I downloaded the at76_usb-firmware.tar.gz file and copied the at76c503-rmfd.bin file to /lib/firmware and ran chmod 755/ chown root:root as the instructions said.
I then ran rmmod -f at76c50x_usb followed by at76c50x_usb. iwconfig now shows my linksys adapter as wlan1. I use ifconfig to bring the interface up and then set the essid (not hidden) with iwconfig. I then use dhclient to try and get a dhcp address, but no luck.
I have tried setting the wireless mode to managed and setting the ap with the cell address of my wireless router. Still no luck. I continue to the get dhcp no offers report.
I have read that I need to shutdown network-manager if configuring by hand. I did this with service network-manager stop. it doesn't seem to get an address either after this.
Checking the output of messages, kern.log and syslog I get wlan1: link not ready and if I set the ap by hand. I get that it can not associate
Here are some other things that I have noticed and wonder if it is a problem:
lshw shows my wlan1 interface, it shows a loaded driver but gives firmware = N/A (this is after copying the firmware file to /lib/firmware) (log files seem to indicate firmware version)
After setting the ap manually with iwconfig, iwconfig output still shows that the access point is not associated. I am not sure if it is supposed to show the cell address after manually setting it or only if it is connected to the router.
I am running kubuntu 10.10 and I am trying to connect to an open router.

Everything went OK as far as I can tell (I still have to adjust acpi and display settings), but I cannot get my laptop to connect to the internet via wireless (wired connection works fine). I've done a good deal of searching online, and I realize that my wireless adapter (wpc54gs, bcm4318 chipset) is problematic in linux, and that b43-fwcutter is typically required. I did install b43-fwcutter, and it seemed to install OK, but nothing subsequently happened when I opened networkmanager. I'm not sure at this point if my problem is that I don't know how to configure any wireless adapter in crunchbang, or if it is that my particular adapter is not being recognized.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've tried it using the Ubuntu 9.10 live CD (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions) and while the adapter can see wireless networks, it can't connect to them. It asks me for my WPA2 key, but after trying to connect for about 30 seconds it asks me for it again. I've read other threads about this issue but they were kind of confusing.
I just need to know whether the adapter will work and if so, how to get it to connect. I'm so sick of Windows and I'd love to switch to Linux, but I won't be able to if I can't get my adapter to work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 and everything seems to be working fine, but I can't seem to connect to my wireless network. I am able to see the wireless networks nearby, so I'm guessing that means the drivers are fine and the hardware is working. When I try to connect, I am seeing the wireless networks of my neighbors, but mine isn't showing. So I manually enter the information in and try to connect, but it doesn't seem to connect. I enter the WEP key and it attempts, then the WEP key screen pops up again, as if I entered the key incorrectly. I've tried many times and I'm 100% certain my key is correct. By the way, the chipset is: Ralink RT61

I have an Acer Aspire 1 Netbook - this is running UBUNTU- When I try to connect to my Linksys Router in wireless mode it asks for password - but doesnt accept. I can see the Linksys in network manager plus several other networks in the vicinity. My other wireless devices all connect O.K. to the Linksys, and accept my password.. I have got the wireless working by installing Ubuntu 8 and then upgrading to the current version, and I would assume some drivers are currently installed.
As usual though, the signal drops out after only a few minutes and I have to keep re-booting the laptop to continue what I'm doing.

I am wondering if anyone has been able to configure the scanner to work that way as well. If I connect the PSC2210 to my laptop via USB, XSane sees the scanner and works perfectly. It hooks up through USB plug, and when I originally plugged it in I got the message that ubuntu didn't support the drivers, but haven't seen it since. I'm hooked up to a LAN cable right now, and can't seem to figure out how to hook up through wireless with this device. Or I just don't know how. When I click on the network connections button on the top right corner (the two computers). I can see my Wired Internet, but no wireless. When I type lsusb in a terminal I get : (sorry I don't know how to do code blocks) So it is recognizing that it's there, but maybe I just don't know how to use it. Also, I'm running Ubuntu Release 10.04 (lucid).
