Ubuntu :: Can't Send From Own Mail Server With Mail Client (Thunderbird Or Evolution)?
Jun 1, 2011I have set up postfix and dovecot as per the Ubuntu anual and appear to have a functioning mail server.Using the sendmail command I can send mail and I receive mail in ~/Maildir. Using Thunderbird I can read any mails received but I can't send any mail from Thunderbird. I have tried with both STARTTLS and SSL/TLS and whilst I get the prompt for a password I keep getting the message my password for my server is wrong.I have ports 25, 465, 587 and 993. Is that all the right ports?When I ping my domain name it resolves to my router name whereas I believe it should resolve to my IP. Could there be a problem with my host file? I've had a play but to no avail.Here's the error in mail.log.

Jul 23, 2010I have just installed/upgraded OpenSUSE 11.3 and setup Evolution Email with 3 Email Accounts. Just for a while I could see all 3 accounts listed on the left column.Suddenly after reading some emails I just noticed that one Email Account (Comcast) had disappeared from the listing. I went to Edit-->Preferences and all 3 accounts are there and all 3 have check marks. I have done a lot of things trying to fix this issue, even uninstall/reinstall Evolution Mail, but nothing of what I have done has been able to make this Email account to be listed again.

I ticked the box 'leave on server'.Whilst in the mess of trying to configure two email accounts (using rules and folders), I deleted all my 1and1 emails locally. They remain on the server, but I want them now in my client inbox and Evolution seems to ignore those emails. Is there any way I can refresh evolution, so that it doesn't treat these emails any differently to new ones that I retrieve?

Jun 6, 2011When I start up Evolution Mail client by any means (toolbar, applet or command-line) it starts up, but then the window turns grey immediately and freezes. I am forced to close it with the "killall" command.
I love the small mailbox in my toolbar (GNOME) and I don't want to lose it. I am concerned that removing Evolution by the Ubuntu Software Center will eliminate this wonderful tool. Otherwise I would re-install it.
I have made no changes to the mail client in months. My wife who uses Thunderbird on Windows 7 is still operating normally, so I do not believe anything changed on the mail server.

Each time evolution starts up I am prompted to unlock the default keyring. How can I give Evolution permission / access to the default keyring automatically so it can check me email upon start-up without me having to type in my password?

Basically, I am receiving some emails that look lovely in Thunderbird but not in Evolution because the HTML rendering of Evolution isn't as advanced.Here is a screenshot of the difference: how to improve the HTML rendering of Evolution? e.g. a plugin, tip, code patch, etc. The closest I've got is to right-click the email, "Save As...", save as a html file, then open in Firefox. When Evolution fails to use the colours, I find it very hard to read the raw diff.

I still can't find a spot for password. options are, login, set preferences and a remember password checkbox but nowhere to enter a password

I want to be able to intersperse my replies within a quoted reply i.e. if the email had three paragraphs, I'd like to be able to have my replies between each of the paragraphs. At the moment, I don't seem to be able to do anything other than delete from the quoted section - I try to simulate my requirements by cutting and then 'paste quotation', but this doesn't always work as sometimes Evolution adds too many levels of '> ' .

Apr 5, 2010I had configured the evolution to send/recive email. After it had been configured, it could receive emails. Suddendly it can't fetch email anymore. In the inbox of evolution, there were about 200 emails. There are maybe 5K emails in the server, I guessed. I'm not sure whether it's the problem that there's one email in the server too big, so the evolution can not fetch it. The error of evolution is: error while fetching email. Feb 24, 2011we had a server with Hostway, and it was running ubuntu. The server also had Plesk installed, which did some funny things. We had several websites on that server, and many email addresses. Then we changed servers. Now we have a server through Rackspace and it is also running Ubuntu. It also has Virtualmin installed, which generally does not impose as many unconventional changes on Ubuntu as Plesk did.
Rather than using Thunderbird to download my email (which is what I used to do) I've decided I'll start reading my email on the server. So I will ssh to the server and then use some email client, such as Alpine, to read the email. So I installed Alpine. I have an email account for "lawrence". The email address is lawrence @ krubner. Currently, when mail arrives for that account, it is stored here:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new
and then it is transferred to hear:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur
When I start Alpine, while logged in as lawrence, Alpine automatically sets up an inbox for me here:
/home/lawrence/mail/
How do I get Alpine (or any other client) to read from the correct folder? I'm fairly sure the email package (the MTA) at work on this new server is Postfix. As near as I can tell, my email is held for 24 hours in this folder:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new
and then it gets transferred here:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur
Alpine only lets me set one path for my Inbox, so I'm not sure what path I should set. If I use "cur" I will see all email 1 day late, but if I use "new" then I will miss email if I go a day without checking.

Jul 26, 2011I've been running the Evolution mail system under Fedora-15/KDE for about a month now, and it has some very serious problems. I just noticed that it is available for SUSE, and figured that since KDE is the principal desktop supported by KDE the SUSE version may be fixed. Before I go through the very tedious process of getting the SUSE version to compile on Fedora, I'd like to know whether anyone has seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution:It ignores font control from the KDE Settings->Applications Appearance window, both KDE font control and GTK+ font control, also its own internal font control window.
It has trouble sending messages to an SMTP server, sometimes taking a l-o-n-g time, sometimes timing out. This can be temporarily cured by restarting it It crashes when a filter attempts to refile an outgoing message. It often asks if I want to recover messages that have never been lost. It often locks up receiving mail from a remote POP3 server. I can live with these, except for items 1 and 2, since I have workarounds. If you are fairly sure that you have not seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution

Oct 19, 2010After running Pine remotely to view some mail on the server, I can no longer access those emails remotely with Evolution or Outlook Express. I know the mail is still there on the server someplace, because it still appears in Pine's "INBOX" folder. But that is clearly not the same as the "Inbox" folder for that account which appears in Evolution and Outlook Express, which is now empty. How can I configure Evolution to re-access those emails?
