just recently I made the move back to Ubuntu from Windows. Upon re-installing I noticed a problem with me connecting to the internet. Previously on Windows I had updated my Ethernet Adapter driver, upon installing I would have to disable and re-enable the device to let my computer have access to the internet. My problem here is how would I go about fixing this on Ubuntu so I can have internet access on Ubuntu

The Wired Internet adapter isn't working with Ubuntu 10.10, and without this working, I can't get my updates for the Broadcom WLAN adapter. I have a Realtek RTL8101E/8102E PCI-Expredd Fast Ethernet controller. I have looked for solutions, but haven't found any relating to my problem.
To be specific: Ubuntu 10.10 is recognizing the Ethernet adapter as eth0. When I try to manually connect after inserting an Ethernet cable connected to the Internet, it tries for a couple of minutes before telling me the adapter's been disconnected. The connector lights remain the same on the port as they always were.

I am trying to setup a VPN using OpenVPN to allow a secure connection between my smartphone and my LAN. I have been reading an OpenVPN book and some tutorials on how to setup the server side, but I'm stuck at how to create a virtual device. The OpenVPN book says when installing OpenVPN the installer (or aptitude to be more precise) should ask me if it should create a TAP/TUN device. The thing is, it doesn't ask me anything at all. It just installs, that's it.
Most tutorials simply tell me to create a new device in the network/interfaces file. Where is the difference? What should I do now? I like having options, that is one reason I like Linux, but this does confuse me. My second question is about the IP range of the virtual adapter. Should it be in the same range as my LAN, or should I use something entirely different?

I have two pci network adapters. I see them in pci device list (lspci). And I see them using ifconfig. How do I relate them - which pci device corresponds to ifconfig network adapter ? (I can't open my hardware and relate them using MAC stickers)

I`ve got a dual boot of win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. After I put the system to sleep in win7, it was unable to start the ethternet adapter back (Now after system boot, the lights around the ethernet port blink for a few times and then turn off. This repeats in a while). Now it is disabled in ubuntu too. Is there any way to start it again? It is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller.

I love ubuntu, but I don't know how to use a command line to save my life. I'd just as soon never use a terminal ever. My big issue is I cannot get my wireless adapter to work. It is a keebox w150nu, which is based off the Ralink RT3070 chip. I am willing to use command line to get this thing to work because I love ubuntu to death, but everything I have tried has failed. I have gone to the Ralink website and downloaded the Tar.bz file from there. t
The file I grabbed is the third one down from the top: [URL].
I have absolutely no idea what to do from there with the file however. Please understand that I have zero idea how to use command line in a terminal. What I have to do to make this work? Is there a usb wireless N adapter that works straight away with ubuntu 10.10, as in I plug it in before the install, and it is immediately recognized and works immediately?

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 (and eventually upgraded to 10.10) on a 6+ year old Gateway Laptop. When I booted Ubuntu up after installing it, I was rather surprised to discover that the wireless card didn't work. I am almost certain that the wireless card is a Broadcom BCM4306, but I am unable to determine what revision it is, if at all. When I look at the network connections widget, it says that the wireless card is not ready, and iwconfig (I think) says that it's disabled.
It's not a problem with the laptop itself, because I was able to get a Linksys usb wireless adapter to work just fine on it, although it was SLOW (about 90 kbs). I am trying to fix this on a FRESH installation of Xubuntu 10.04 with the default packages on it, nothing more. Now, I was able to get the wireless working ONCE on ubuntu, using fwcutter I think, but it went away upon reboot. One last thing, I am running the 32 bit Xubuntu 10.04 on what I think is a 64 bit machine (I think it ran x64 Ubuntu 10.04 before I ditched it), so how to figure out if it is 64 bit.

I have an Asrock A330GC, with onboard ethernet, and an Engenius PCI card for wifi.I installed ubuntu server 9.10 no problems, and it picked up my ethernet in the installation with no difficulties.I couldn't get 9.10 to do what i wanted, so I tried installing 8.4 instead. This however didn't pick up any of the drivers, so i couldn't get online. So i reinstalled 9.10, only to find that no couldn't find network in the installation.Absolutely NOTHING has changed, the ethernet cable still plugged in, and if i plug same cable into my laptop, it works fine.Any ideas people?ifconfig doesn't mention any eth0, just lo, with an ip of 127.0.0.1 and amask of 255.0.0.0 which i'm fairly certain means its dead

I used Several Distos, went to school up to Linux 225, but haven't used Linux for years. I have an older (P4, Win xp) laptop I use at the coffee shop. I want to put Linux Mint on it. I use a USB Adapter (Arilink101 AWLL6075) for Wi-Fi. I tried the live CD and, of course, USB Adapter doesn't work. In the half hour I looked at it, I realized I forgot a lot of things. I could not even find the laptop USB. Will tring to get it to work be the typical Linux thing, where you download the drivers, do the install right, and it doesn't work? You compile drivers, set everything up right, and it doesn't work?

i can't get my wg111t netgear wireless adapter to work. I followed the help thing by installing ndisgtk, which installed successfully. I was able to load up the file on the cd that also the help page said. The problem is that the computer won't load up the adapter as it would load up my cd's and flash drive. Here's how i installed ndisgtk. I installed the files ndiswrapper_common, ndiswrapper_1.9, and then the ndisgtk_0.8.5.All of these were for i386.

Have tried methods from every thread I could find for past 10 hrs. Have tried installing rt3070sta etc.Monitored message log; appears that the driver isn't recognized, though the USB port sees that something is plugged in (when I plug in the adapter, and unplug it).All of the threads miss something; I can't get a wireless port listed under ifconfig no matter what I try. Seems that every method leaves out something (I guess because everyone's box is different in some way). Network manager doesn't help much. Downloaded Wicd, which does even less.I guess I could try ndiswrapper, but I'm scared away by the hundreds of pages I see on going that route; I'm almost certain it wouldn't work (1000 possible points of failure).Does anyone have a strategy to recommend?AM64 box, newly installed Edubuntu 10.04, ran update manager.

I've been using Windows all my life (and still have to use it at work) but I made the big leap yesterday and installed Ubuntu on my personal machine (at last). With my "Windows-centric" mind, there are a million things that I still don't get, but I must say the community and forums look quite impressive and easy to access (kudos! ). I am testing this today! My current problem is with the wireless adapter. I have a Belkin N Wireless USB adapter (FSD8053v3) and Belkin, of course, doesn't make linux drivers. When I installed Ubuntu, it recognized it automatically and I could connect to my network, but navigation was very slow so I tried to install Belkin windows drivers using ndiswrapper. It worked immediately, and navigation was very fast. However after a reboot, I lost the connection, I can't even see any of the neighbouring networks.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.0.4 with an Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection. I have been trying for a couple weeks now different techniques to get my wired ethernet connection working properly. I have a seeming common issue with my e100 driver dropping connection and having hard time picking it back up sometimes. I want to purchase a relatively inexpensive Ethernet card whose generic Linux driver actually operates it CORRECTLY, open up comp and put it in, and update to 9.10. Any list of Ethernet cards that are know to work flawlessly on Ubuntu, or at least tell me which card YOU are using that works perfect without having to write code, install wrapper programs, etc...?

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 using Wubi through Windows 7. It seems to be working but it will not connect to my wired internet connection. It tells me there is no wired connection, when there is. I used sysinfo and its not showing any network adapter or controller. I have a board with nvidia nforce go 430, could it be a driver issue. It works fine in windows though. Tried using a wireless adapter and all is working. But why doesn't the wired ethernet connection work.

I have 2 (some future machines will have 4) ethernet ports. I want to have them configured such that if any gets unplugged, as long as at least one of them is plugged in, it can reach the network (even if via a different IP address), and it can be reached (at least when trying a working IP address). I tried this for /etc/network/interfaces:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static

My wireless card is from Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB UHCI Controller
The ethernet cable connection used to work before, but I fooled around with some commands and now seems to be disabled...
