Ubuntu Networking :: ThinkPad Running 8.04 Not Showing Ethernet?

Apr 6, 2011

My professor gave me an older ThinkPad, i1161, because he wants me to learn linux. So far, I successfully downloaded Hardy Heron onto the computer, using the Alternate version. Everything works great, and I can log on, play games, go into word processor, the whole nine yards. Unfortunately, the computer won't connect to the ethernet cable that I have plugged in. I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but that is probably because I don't know where to begin.

I also get an error message during boot, it says "ACPI no DMI Bios year" then it says "ACPI=force is required to enable ACPI. I don't know what this means, but I fugured it might have something to do with the ethernet.I am connecting through my University internet. Also, under Network Settings ->Connections, it only has one option, "Point to point connection" and it says "This network interface is not configured."

CentOS 5 Networking :: No Ethernet Connection On Thinkpad X40?

Nov 23, 2010

I'm trying to connect my newly installed CentOs 5.5 to the network. But although there is a cable connection that has worked well before with other distributions, the network configuration keeps telling me:"Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable?"Here are the results of the /.getinfo network script:This is a university network that is working well for thousands of students, so the problem is not on the side of the network or the DHCP server.The wireless card is also not shown in the network configuration.

Networking :: Dhclient Running On Disconnected Ethernet Port?

Nov 8, 2010

I have a simple server running Ubuntu Server. Usually the server connects to the network by Wifi, so there is usually no cable connected to the Ethernet port. I noticed that there is a dhclient3 running on eth0 anyway. It is causing undesirable disk activity. Obviously, it is never going to get a response as long as no cable is connected. I can kill the responsible process manually, but I wonder first what is starting the process and how I can prevent it from being started. If there is a way to get the server to boot without starting this process, I wonder whether this is the right solution. Connecting to the network by Ethernet is the failsafe when Wifi doesn't work. I guess what I would like to see would be a way for the server to detect when eth0 does not have a cable connected and not start dhclient in that case, but to activate dhclient when a cable is connected.

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom 4401 Ethernet: No "Wired Connections" Showing Up In Network Manager?

Apr 10, 2011

I've been struggling with this a bit now, and I'm not sure what the problem is. I have a laptop with a BCM4401 Ethernet card as well as a BCM4311 Wireless card. The wireless card works great out of the box, I'm able to connect with it perfectly. The problem is the ethernet card. Here is the situation: The NetworkManager menu doesn't list "Wired Networks" at all (ie. it doesn't say "not managed", it just only lists Wireless networks) Going into Network Connections, there is an "Auto eth0" entry ifconfig shows eth0 (which I assume means NetworkManager isn't managing eth0) I have edited /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf to say managed=true I have edited /etc/network/interfaces to remove any mention of eth0 (all that's left is the "lo" lines) So I'm not sure why eth0 is still showing up when I run ifconfig, and why Network Manager is not managing it. Any ideas?

Edit: Not sure what I did but now ifconfig spits out this:

Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1c:26:2c:60:75
inet addr:10.0.1.12 Bcast:10.0.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::21c:26ff:fe2c:6075/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

[Code]...

The MAC address of the "Auto eth0" entry is 00:1C:23:8F:D4:39, the same as the eth1 entry that ifconfig spits out.

Networking :: Ethernet Interface Leaves RUNNING State After Some Time

Jul 29, 2011

I am using RHEL6 on a server with 3 interfaces.

eth0 is connecting via a Cisco switch to the outer world and eth1 and eth2 to internal networks.

eth1 and eth2 are working without problems all the time, however I have the following incident with eth0: although it is RUNNING, and after it works for some time (like some hours), it then becomes incapable of sending/receiving traffic. Here are more details, after the interface exits the RUNNING state:

[root@mgt ~]# ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr E4:1F:13:6C:87:74
inet addr:9.162.91.26 Bcast:9.162.91.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::e61f:13ff:fe6c:8774/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

[Code]....

I am wondering whether there this is because there is not traffic for some time and so the interface goes to idle. Is there any parameter I can tweak in RHEL6 to force the interface to remain RUNNING even in the absence of traffic (although I would be expecting that some 802.1 packets would be periodically flowing from the switch to the interface)?

General :: Ancient Thinkpad Running Mint 9 Cannot Get Sound To Endure Re-boot?

Dec 6, 2010

with the help of others (to whom grateful thanks), I've managed to get this distro installed and my PCMCIA Wireless card working without a LAN connection!Result......well it was for me!next big prob is sound.......any sound at all!This command sudo modprobe snd-cs4236 sometimes gives me some, just for the current session, if it don't want to play, it just ignores me!Two main questions,

1) How do I get the attention of the "Alsa Mixer"? (the GUI is normally just blank and may or may not be activated by the above command!)
2) Once I have the attention of the "Alsa mixer", how do I maintain it upon re-boot?

Some one guided me to this post and despite it's age, I appended my plea for help....but I fear it is not the correct place............I just hope I'm now in the right place.url

Ubuntu Installation :: Setup A Dual Boot System With XP Running Side By Side On Thinkpad T41?

Jan 28, 2010

have been trying to setup a dual boot system with ubuntu and XP running side by side on my Thinkpad T41.tried it a few times and always causes the same problem. i have 40 gig HDD, on which i create a 13 gig NTFS partition and leave the rest as free space. then install XP on the NTFS partition. no problems.

then i boot from the ubuntu disk (9.10 Karmic) and install using the "use free space" option at the partition section. ubuntu installs ok, and boots fine from GRUB 2.0. BUT when i select the XP option from GRUB's list, it starts to boot XP, i get the standard XP loading screen for three seconds and then it crashes to a blue screen critical problem, and restarts the system. when i then boot from the xp cd and go into recovery mode CHKDSK will not recognise the disk, and DISKPART shows one HDD at 35 gig which it cannot access.

this means i cant run FIXBOOT and get my xp install running again. every time i do this process it produces the same problem. tried at first with xp installed on whole HDD, and reducing the xp partition size. killed XP. then tried ubuntu first and xp second - but this caused the same inaccessible disk problem - xp would not recognise the partitions and would not install. so i slipstreamed my XP install disk to SP2 hoping this would make it recognise the partitions, but no luck there. so had to format all and repartition the 13 gig NTFS for xp. installed xp again without difficulty but ubuntu install killed my xp in the same way.

Ubuntu :: Switch To Running Program That's Not Showing Up In System Tray?

Jan 3, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and I'm running Skype 2.1 (Beta). Whenever I "x" out of the Skype program, from what I can tell it's minimizing the Skype program and not actually terminating the thread (just as it does in Windows), however when I "x" out of Skype the icon is not showing up in the system tray (but it does in Windows). So one would think that it's not running, however if I try to re-launch Skype I get an error message stating: Another Skype Instance May Exist.

I confirm this by going to System > Administration > System Monitor and sure enough, Skype is running. So if I "x" out of the program, how do I switch back to it because it's not showing up in the system tray? One last thing : Alt+Tab does not work. It will list the other programs running, but not Skype, despite the fact that it is running.

It's using WPA security, and I'm asked for authentification but it never connects. Ethernet connection is fine, but as I'm currently stuck in bed after an operation I'd like a wireless connection

Ubuntu Networking :: 9.10 Where's Dialup Modem On Thinkpad X60s?

Jan 13, 2010

Ubuntu 9.10: where's my dialup modem on my thinkpad X60s?

I'm trying to use "GNOME PPP" to connect by dialup, and it complains that it can't find my builtin modem. But XP can, and that's what I'm using at this moment. XP says the modem is on COM3.

I tried using several "/dev/tty*" entries in the GNOME-PPP setup, but none of the ones I tried worked. The GNOME-PPP default is "/dev/modem", but none such is mounted.

Is there some way I can find out where the modem is mounted, if it is? Or else, how can I mount the modem properly and test it?

Ubuntu Networking :: 9.10 - Disable PRO / Wireless 2915ABG (Thinkpad X41)

How to achieve this in Ubuntu? The file attached gives all the info about my wireless set-up as it stands.

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04/Thinkpad E420/wireless Not Working

May 29, 2011

I have a Thinkpad E420 and am having major problems getting the RTL8188ce wireless to work. I'm running 64-bit. I was following instructions from this thread: [URL]

I installed the drivers from the Realtek website for the updated kernel (URL is in the previous thread link). Modprobe didn't work, but it looked like wireless drivers were installed anyway after I did "make install." But I still run into this problem in the network manager: Enable Wireless is checked, but above it, Wireless Networks is greyed out with "wireless is disabled" underneath.

Later in that thread, someone posted a link to a PPA with drivers that should work. I could not get the PPA to work through terminal, but I did manually download and install those drivers. Same problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Drivers For Brand New Thinkpad

Sep 1, 2011

I just recently purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad e520 and I'm wanting to put Ubuntu 11.04 on it. I downloaded the 64bit iso and burned it to a thumb-drive, just before booting the thumb-drive. I have not yet installed Ubuntu, but rather I'm still running it from a thumb-drive. I want to make sure everything will work fine, before installing it permanently.

However, it doesn't appear as if any drivers for my wireless card were loaded, as I can't view the available wireless networks. I successfully installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop several months ago and I haven't booted into Windows since, -not one time. Therefore, I'm hoping to have my new laptop run Ubuntu as well.
