I've been having an issue ever since I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. It won't connect to my network for some reason. I enter the WEP key and all the other info, but it fails to connect. I tried to install the Broadcom STA Driver under Additional Drivers but then I get an error message saying SystemError: installArchives()failed.

When I download the drivers for my Broadcom card (BCM-4312), I get this error message:

View 6 Replies View RelatedI can't get my fglrx drivers activated, every time I try I get an error message. I first tried going into System-->Administration-->Additional Drivers and activating it their but I get this error message: SystemError: installArchives() failed. I tried using some jockey command (my apologies as I can't quite remember the command) and I got the same error message. I was searching around on google and I someone said to type Code: aticonfig --initial Into a terminal and now my computer is running really slowly and I can't get it to run like normal. My windows scroll down in increments, when I try to move a window it jumps around, I can't handle how slowly this thing is going.

I just installed Lucid off an official CD onto a Dell Inspiron 1521 and the wireless doesn't work. It worked out of the box on 9.04, which is what I was most recently using. The wired connection does not work either. I'm not sure why. I'm aware that I probably need some sort of driver for my Broadcom card. I read that I could get the drivers off the cd, and I think I did it (although possibly not correctly.) I got what I think is the correct driver, bcmwl-kernel-source, and also something called fwcutter I think maybe by accident. They both show in the Hardware Drivers list, but when I try to activate them I get "System Error: installarchives() failed". I tried using:

However, the package itself succeeds with installation. Looks to me like it's a problem with a kernel I installed.

At uni I did this for a couple of reasons, primarily to connect to trackers for bittorrent. I would get these messages fairly often but I never thought much of it because I figured I was just loosing packets over the network or something (understandable in my situation). At home I decided to continue to use this method because that computer is set up in DMZ and is very useful. I havn't received many of these messages but recently all my torrents stalled and I had a whole bunch of these messages. Is it possible my computer just cant handle all the network connections (it's a 2ghz AMD running debian)? What exactly do these messages mean? Is there any way to optimize my connection in any way?
I had the elrepo kmod-r8168 driver running smooth for a while on my development box.
Yesterday, I did a clean install on it and when I tried to install the latest kmod-r8168 rpm, it failed to enable the networking support:
# yum --enablerepo=elrepo install kmod-r8168
The install performed all proper steps to disable the 8169 driver, I double checked to be sure.This is not a connectivity issue. If I remove the kmod-r8168 rpm, reboot the server and run the ifconfig eth0 up to activate the interface, everything works as expected. I use the latest kernel (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 x86_64).
First, I performed a clean install, activated the eth0 and did a yum update, then installed the kmod-r8168 with yum. Then, I reinstalled the OS again, activated the eth0 and installed the kmod-r8168 on a 5.5 CD based kernel, same fail results. The only hiccup is: every time I start the box, I have to activate the eth0 interface (with default CentOS 8169 driver):
# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.3
# ping -c 3 192.168.1.1 (no packets lost)
# ifconfig eth0 up
Once I do this, I have network connectivity.
I'm trying to get VPN working so that I can browse "from the UK". I got myself a free one hour trial but it's no good, because I can't get it to work!
I added the network using the network manager. I put 'uk.hideipvpn.com' in "gateway". I left "NT domain" blank as I didn't know what it meant.

I setup a PPTP VPN connection in ubuntu 9.10 (x86_64) using NetworkManager. After enabling the VPN connection, I can browse web pages (it's perfect) but after a while the vpn connection is terminated! The following is my syslog after connecting and terminating:

Why is it that the darn printer keeps breaking on this thing (Ubuntu) ??? It's either every damn update that keeps messing this up. One computer is bad enough, I can't imagine having to take care of even five with this thing always screwing something up. What the hell is going on??? Yeah I'm tired of this thing always messing up the printer. Please fix this thing, separate the browsers if you have to, do whatever it takes, but please STOP messing up the printers...and I don't even print that often.Oh yeah, when you first start the OS up, the drive seems to go on for a while longer now. I only put the regular updates and don't tweak anything.

Just completed the upgrade to 10.04 from 8.04, and ironing out the wrinkles. Since the upgrade, I'm not able to establish a VPN connection to my institute (a problem since outgoing mail REQUIRES a VPN connection) The pull down menu shows the connection as an option, but clicking on it brings up a separate window that simply says "The VPN connection CfA failed because the VPN Service failed to start." Never had this issue under Hardy, so not sure what's going on. Under "Configure VPN" the settings look the same as they always did.

A while ago i attempted to use ubuntu as my default operating system and it failed, i could not get the shares to work properly and i gave up. Yes i know, may be i should have kept going.
Any way, my problem is, Im attempting to use ubuntu 11.04 now, and this time i am realy keen on going through with this, however... for some reason when i connect my wired connection cable ubuntu keeps failing to connect. this is with the auto eth0.
Can any one help me with this problem? This is one of the major things that i will need to do if i want to switch over to ubuntu.
I've tried to set up an easy PXE server to set up ubuntu on various PC's via network. When I was finished I tried to boot a virtual mashine and later a normal notebook, both had the same problems, they find the TFTP server start booting and installing but it always fail. Reason: they get no IP from the DHCP-Server (I'm using dhcp3-server), even if I enter an IP manually I only get to the mirrow step where it tells me bad mirrow and the dhcp log says: Abandoning IP address 192.168.1.46: declined. I also rebootet the router but nothing changed.

I have a usb wireless adapter (currently Sitecom as I bought a new one today to hopefully fix it, but ended up at exactly the same problem as with my old adapter). The network manager I'm using now is Wicd since some topics I was looking through were about malfunctioning GNOME network-manager (which I removed) and suggested to try this. The GNOME network-manager kept prompting to insert my WEP network key which was a correct one. When I removed all security from the network it didn't prompt anything anymore but just failed to connect. The Wicd network manager is so nice to tell me that it cannot obtain the IP address however, so I suspect that this is my main issue... but I have no idea what I can do about this? Tried using a static IP and then I get the message "Connection failed: Could not contact the wireless access point."
I feel powerless as my knowledge here is just lacking..
Dual boot Vista Basic and Ubuntu 10.04 on low spec PC. I can connect to the wireless when I am next to it. I move to the room where the computer is normally used and I lose connection. I can still see it but it fails to establish a connection. Okay, sounds like it's just too far way but when I re-boot and use Vista, it works fine (1 or 2 bars, but it works). Is this a driver issue? Anything I can do apart from move my wireless router?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed the Ubuntu Desktop 10.4 on my new MacBook Pro under a Parallels Desktop (VM).The install wend fine and after rebooting I was a happy new Ubuntu user.Had to reconfigure the ethernet port of my virtual machine and I had internet access.After 5 minutes, Ubuntu displayed a message that there were updates available, which I ran successfully.After the reboot however I got the following message :"An error occurred while mounting /media/psfPress S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery"After pressing M, a maintenance shell started under "root@ubuntu".As new user, I did not want to mess around as root (I would know what to enter).So I pressed ctrl-D which brought me back to the above message and I typed S.Ubuntu started ok however I lost my eth0 interface.In the network tools, I only find the Loopback interface, no eth0 anymore.Do I have to reinstall from scratch ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to send a 4000+ mass email with Thunderbird, when it popped up an error saying that such and such email was no longer a customer and halted the program. Is there a plugin for Tbird that deletes these "bad" email addresses out of the Bcc line when sending? It would take a long time to go through the emails deleting customers that no longer have email addresses.
This was also done using outlook and the error did not happen.
