Ubuntu Networking :: VPN Service Failed To Start
May 7, 2010
Just completed the upgrade to 10.04 from 8.04, and ironing out the wrinkles. Since the upgrade, I'm not able to establish a VPN connection to my institute (a problem since outgoing mail REQUIRES a VPN connection) The pull down menu shows the connection as an option, but clicking on it brings up a separate window that simply says "The VPN connection CfA failed because the VPN Service failed to start." Never had this issue under Hardy, so not sure what's going on. Under "Configure VPN" the settings look the same as they always did.

I have CentOS 5.2 just installed and massively updated with yum -update command. Than I tried to configure firewall. After changes via system_config_securitylevel_tui (open ssh, http, ftp, and 3306:TCP ports) iptables service can't start with message
> /sbin/service iptables start
Flushing firewall rules: [OK]
Setting chains to policy ACCEPT: mangle filter nat [OK]
Unloading iptables modules: [OK]
Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore v1.3.5: Couldn't load match `TCP':/lib64/iptables/libipt_TCP.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Error occurred at line: 18
Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more information.
[FAILED]
I erased the iptables service and installed it again with yum. How can I make this service work?

I've been using Kubuntu Lucid on a Compaq tc4200 for nearly a month now. Suddenly today I logged into my machine and found that I couldn't connect to anything, Internet, LAN, router, nothing!Upon further investigation, I found that networking services weren't turned on at all!I tried manually starting the network service using
Code:

I have recently installed CentOS onto an old machine to get it up and running as a basic web/mail server. Originally the Network Interface worked ok, however I have been editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to try and set the IP address to be static.Now when I run the 'service network restart' command it won't bring the eth0 interface up and comes up with the following errors;
ifcfg-eth0 Line 3 DEVICE: command not found
missing config file ifcfg-ifcfg-eth0
It doesn't seem to like any of the command words, even though most of these were in the original file that worked and the ones I added to do static I have commented out.

I have setup a CentOS 5.5 server as a DHCP server. That will be it's only task in a Cisco callmanger VoIP environment The DHCP server that comes with CentOS 5.5 is from ISC V3.0.5 -redhat.
The server (HP DL360) has two physical NIC's of which only NIC1 is used (ETH0)
ifconfig shows:
Code:
The interface has a fixed IP setup.
My dhcp.conf file looks like this:
Code:
When I start (try to) dhcpd via the service interface or via the prompt as
Code: service dhcpd start
I get an [FAILED] message and the following is in /var/log/messages
Code:
But when I start the DHCPD on the comamnd prompt in debug mode it looks as follows:
Code:
and /var/log/messages shows:
Code:
Why does the system ask a declaration for eth0 0.0.0.0?

I have installed CentOS 5.5 final on VM ware 7.0 workstation.... and I was trying to install and configure bind9.. it installed alright but it refused to start because named.conf is not in the /etc/ directory. I have copied the template for /usr/share/doc/named/* to (/etc/ and /var/named/) the appropriate directory but it still fails but on it does not gives me any error message. Oh... least I forgot I was trying to configure it as a cache only server for now.

My Ubuntu 9.10 Server does not automatically get an ip address at start up and I have to run
Code:
sudo dhclient
every time so I it connects to the network, gets an ip etc. This is fine so long as I am physically present. If I am accessing it remotely using SSH and reboot the system there's no way I can connect back again untill someone runs a sudo dhclient on the machine.
No I am trying to add dhclient to startup automatically. I was hoping to put it in
/etc/rc2.d but to be able to run the script must be present in /etc/init.d. The dhclient command is located in /sbin
Creating a sym link in etc/init.d to point to /sbin/dhclient hasn't worked for me so far. I can't copy the command to /etc/init.d before running
Code:
update-rc.d dhclient default?? How else do I have it run at system start?

I can start this from the command line and it shows no errors.
httpd -t --- syntax ok.
no entry in the httpd error logs.
chkconfig reports it as on.
service --status-all shows this --
httpd.service - LSB: start and stop Apache HTTP Server
Loaded: loaded (/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd)
Active: failed since Wed, 01 Jun 2011 07:06:18 +0100; 58min ago
Process: 1152 ExecStart=/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/httpd.service
After a reinstall I finally caught this in /var/log/messages
systemd[1]: Unit httpd.service entered failed state
The httpd.service file does not exist on the system. Where can I get a copy?

I am running a debian squeeze server, and have autofs 5.0.4 installed. One of my scripts (autofs executable files) is trying to mount some of my LAN hosts. The host mount fine at start, but when unmounted automatically, it will not mount again. (At least unless I wait for 2-3 minutes). The problem is, maybe, that I get these messages in the log:
add_host_addrs: hostname lookup failed: Name or service not known
mount(nfs): no hosts available
failed to mount {myshare}
If I wait a couple of minutes, the share is mounting fine, but that is not an option. The mount command issued by my script is mounting just fine on the command line after all these error messages, but autofs seems to have a problem with it anyhow.I have searched all over the web trying to get a reasonable explanation to any of these messages without luck.I don't think that I can upgrade automount, since this is an embedded device (SheevaPlug), so what is my options?

I've been trying to install samba the last couple days, every time I do apt-get install samba it says that its the latest version but there's no samba folder in /etc/ and when I try /etc/init.d/samba start (or stop or restart) I get no such file or directory errors.
I've tried apt-get --purge remove samba to remove it and then reinstall but it does nothing and after the reinstall I'm still left with the above problem.
