Ubuntu Networking :: Connection Failed: Unable To Get IP Address

Apr 24, 2010

So I got Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop working really neat and wanted to upgrade my desktop to 9.10 as well. So I reinstalled Ubuntu there and now I can't connect to my network anymore....

I have a usb wireless adapter (currently Sitecom as I bought a new one today to hopefully fix it, but ended up at exactly the same problem as with my old adapter). The network manager I'm using now is Wicd since some topics I was looking through were about malfunctioning GNOME network-manager (which I removed) and suggested to try this. The GNOME network-manager kept prompting to insert my WEP network key which was a correct one. When I removed all security from the network it didn't prompt anything anymore but just failed to connect. The Wicd network manager is so nice to tell me that it cannot obtain the IP address however, so I suspect that this is my main issue... but I have no idea what I can do about this? Tried using a static IP and then I get the message "Connection failed: Could not contact the wireless access point."

I feel powerless as my knowledge here is just lacking..

OpenSUSE :: Connection Failed: Unable To Get IP Address

Jan 26, 2010

I seem to be having real difficulty downgrading my Wicd as I keep getting "Connection Failed: Unable to Get IP Address", and after having the trouble in another laptop (Ubuntu Mint) with the same problem...oddly enough the solution (other than buying another router) was to downgrade the wicd. butttt.... Now I not able to uninstall Wicd and therefore can't install the downgraded rpm file.Below is the error when trying to delete Wicd 1.7.0.2/ On another note,,, is there an easier one stop search for available software?, One that doesn't require an intimate knowledge of repositor

Fedora Networking :: Establishing A Vpn Connection Using Vpnc / Error Failed To Bind To 0.0.0.0:500: Address Already In Use?

Nov 24, 2010

I am having difficulties in establishing a vpn connection using vpnc (or NetworkManaager-vpnc).

As long as the openswan IPsec daemon is running, vpnc-helper quits with the error message

Quote:

Failed to bind to 0.0.0.0:500: Address already in use
[user@computer ...]# vpnc-helper --local--port 0

If I use NetworkManager-vpnc, then establishing the connection simply fails.
Using the --local-port 0 option does not change anything.

If I stop the ipsec service (service ipsec stop) then establishing the connectiong works, both with NetworkManager-vpnc and the console tool, but apparently the network traffic is not routed via the VPN - in my case this means that I cannot access hosts within the vpn and stuff.

Funny thing is - on my notebook from where I connect via WLAN, everything works fine. With Fedora 13 everything works fine, too.

Does anybody have an idea how to enforce that the vpn connection is actually used?

Slackware :: Broke Wireless Connection... Unable To Get IP Address?

Feb 15, 2011

I installed Wicd from the Slackware DVD and was successfully connecting to the internet for the past few weeks.I do not know if the following caused my problem or if it is something else that I did:All of a sudden (probably something that I did) the wpa_gui screen started to appear on my desktop. I just closed it.Today, in a moment of stupidity, I said "Who needs this wpa-gui thingy?! I know, I'll just use pkgtool to uninstall it. Then, if I need it, I'll just use pkgtool to reinstall it!" So, I did. After my next reboot, you guessed it, no wireless.

Wicd seems to do everything it used to do, except connect. I get the error msg "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address." I see my 'connection' listed and it is still set to "Automatically connect to this network" but it doesn't.So, is it the wpa-gui app that I 'uninstalled' or is it something else that I might have done?

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Obtain IP Address On Wired Connection

Jan 30, 2010

I am having a persistent problem with getting a wired network connection under a recent install of Ubuntu 9.10. The network manager will show the wired network as 'disconnected' after a restart. This is true whether I am connected directly to my ISP's modem, or through the Linksys router that I usually use.The output of ifconfig suggests that eth0 is not being assigned an IP address:Code:I have reached the limits of my own ingenuity.

Networking :: Static IP Address With 3G Usb Stick Connection?

Jul 31, 2010

I am trying to find out if it is possible for me to have a static ip address with my 3G usb modem ? I am using gnome network manager in Ubuntu 10.04 but it there is no option for me there for a static IPV4 address. I know with a wireless or ethernet connection you would modify /et/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and/or /etc/network/interfaces. I don't think those two would do for a PPP connection. When I go to /etc/ppp/ I see no .conf file that I could modify.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wicd Does Not Obtain Ip Address On Wired Connection

Feb 13, 2010

Running kubuntu karmic, kernel 2.6.31-19, on Asus EEE PC 1000.

WICD 1.7.0. hangs on "wired connection: obtaining ip address...". I have downgraded to 1.6.2 and 1.5.9, but this did not solve the issue.

WICD does work under other circumstances, e.g. wireless connection. (But at home I don't have wireless, but just the modem and ethernet.)

Same wired connection ethernet connection works flawlessly on laptop running Windows XP SP2.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Upgrade To 11.4: Can't Resolve Host / Error Code: Connection Failed?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm currently running 11.3 and decided I'd try upgrading to 11.4 following the instructions here: SDB:System upgrade - openSUSEUnfortunately, my attempts are defeated at the point of trying to refresh the new repos; I get the following message (for the oss repo, in this case):

Download (curl) error for 'url':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'download.opensuse.org'

With 11.4 replaced by 11.3 in the repo url, it refreshes just fine. The only repository that works when I change 11.3 to 11.4 is the Packman repo. I'm not really sure why the connection fails for 11.4 but not 11.3!

Further info: I have an old router with no IPv6 support, but have IPv6 disabled system-wide. I can enter the url for the repositories into firefox and they come up just fine - it's only with zypper/YaST that I get the above error message.I also tried upgrading using the network CD but ran into the same sort of problem. In this case it may be because the CD installer doesn't disable IPv6. (I didn't want to download the DVD at my connection speed, and the KDE live CD is not listed as suitable for upgrade).

Fedora Networking :: No Internet Connection With Static IP Address?

Feb 17, 2009

I am a windows user with no linux experience prior to Friday. Im setting up a music server (SqueezeCenter) running Fedora 10.

With the help of posts of this site Ive made good progress with complicated stuffnamely getting Samba and VNC working. My Fedora machine and my windows machines now see each others shared files, and I can control my Fedora machine from my windows machine. (The Fedora machine will ultimately be headless.)

But Im having trouble with a seemingly simple issue setting up my Fedora box with a static IP address. With DHCP enabled on my network Ethernet adapter, all works fine. I then used the System>Administration>Network menu to disable DHCP and to assign the same IP address that DHCP chose. When I do this, two cases need to be distinguished:

1. If I keep the box checked for Controlled by Network Manager, the Network Manager Applet reports a network connection, I nevertheless cannot access the internet, but my Fedora machine is able to communicate with my Squeezebox music player (connected to my network via my DSL modem Ethernet connections, and with a fixed IP address). 2. If I uncheck the box Controlled by Network Manger, then the Network Manager Applet reports no network connection and my Fedora machine is not able to communicate with my Squeezebox music player (and I of course have no internet connectivity).

Ive seen references on other posts suggesting that the Network Manager service be disabled. But I see no way to manually configure the network.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connection Failed And Suddenly Stopped Working

Jul 4, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.4 side by side with my Vista. This is on a PC I leave on permanently and use as a sort of Sever, so Security and Network connection are VERY important on this device. I use it for documents and IP PBX (telephone system). I currently use Vista and 3CX, but I plan to roll it over to Unbuntu full time once its up and runnng correctly - I will just need to change the Grub2 conf priority. After install, all was fine and I managed to make many changes to settings, apps and updates, but I have noticed in the past week when going in to make further changes the network has suddenly stopped working! According to Network Manager and the icon on the panel it is connected and I can not see anything obvious that is not correct. I tried doing a PING (192.168.1.1) from Network Manager to the main router, but it failed. I know that there is nothing wrong with the network nor the card or PC it all sits on. It's working now with Vista and my other machines. It must be a config some-where.
