Ubuntu Networking :: Host Key Verification Failed?
Jan 30, 2011
I just installed openssh-server, and all tutorials say it should work out of the box. But it doesn't, it dies with "Host key verification failed."
Here is the log:
Code:

OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-5ubuntu1, OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config

Release: 9.0
Codename: n/a
kernel: 2.4.21-99-default ( year 2004 )
on unbuntu side i use: SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-6ubuntu2. on suse side i use: SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.7.1p2. both sides are using: Protocol 2 and ServerKeyBits 768 and now my problem. i can connect from ubuntu to suse using ssh without a problem. when i try to connect from suse to ubuntu i always get: Host key verification failed and nothing else. no hint about middle man attack or so. no change to answer -> save the new key. the permissions of ~/ssh my both sides are id_rsa.pubcorrect i think ( drwx------) and the permissions of : authorized_key, id_rsa, known_hosts are all - -rw------- 1 ( not linked or so ).

I know that there are multiple threads with problems like this, but still i didn't found my answer.
The situation is like this:
I have a local server and a remote server, i did a ssh key swap so i can log on to the remote server with no problems (automatically logging on, no need to enter pass or login).
I've made a script that copies (with SCP) a file FROM the REMOTE server TO the LOCAL server (NOT FROM the LOCAL server to the REMOTE server !!!!), and then i get an error like code...

I have Slack 64 bit installed on my desktop, sshd is running. From my netbook running Ubuntu I can not connect through ssh, I always get 'Host key verification failed' message. I have tried a lot of things, I got to a point where I could not ssh either way. So today I removed and re-installed Openssh on both systems. I made sure I was using the new ssh_config and sshd_config files on both systems. Right now I can ssh from the desktop ( Slack ) to Ubuntu ( netbook ) but not the other way around. I do not get a known_hosts file created on Slack, I do get one on Ubuntu. I don't understand why Openssh server on Slack is not accessible, and why the known_hosts file is not getting created.
[code]...
is what I have installed. Most of the suggestions I have found suggest deleting the entry for the remote host. Problem is it never gets created. How do I go about fixing this? This is a link to the last howto I followed, after the re-install of Openssh. [URL]...

I get the following prompt everytime I try to connect a server using SSH.
I type "yes", but is there a way to aovid this?
The authenticity of host '111.222.333.444 (111.222.333.444)' can't be established.
RSA key fingerprint is f3:cf:58:ae:71:0b:c8:04:6f:34:a3:b2:e4:1e:0c:8b.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?

I recently reinstalled my workstation from OpenSuse 11.2 to 11.4. After the installation, I found that I could not run zypper anymore. A few things to note first.
- OpenSuse 11.4 x64 - behind corporate firewall (which worked fine with zypper as long as a proxy was configured with previous versions
- used that ZYPP_ARIA=0 variable previously to help). - proxies configured in /etc/sysconfig/proxy. - all other network utilities I normally use (browser, ssh) all work fine. - I have removed all repositories and added them again several times. I have also done "zypper clean" several times not that I would expect that to be better than removing and re-adding the repositories. When I attempt to run "zypper ref" or "zypper in foo" I get the following:
[code]...
If I manually use wget to grab the package and either run it directly or insert it into the /var/cache/zypp tree (replacing the metalink version zypper complains about) it always works and gives me the right file.....

I am having an issue with HTTPS certification using curl. My curl is configured with OpenSSL. If the certification verification is failed I dont want to terminate the operation, instead I want to continue by just putting a log message. For this I have used OpenSSL SSL_CTX_set_verify() function to set my static C callback function. During HTTPS transaction, my callback is also getting called with first parameter 0 or 1 (depending upon of the certificate verification is success or failure). But even if my certification verification is failure, I want to continue. So I have hard coded to return value as 1 always from my callback function. But still I see the certification error and I don't get the page.

I am trying to access a DVD mounted on a machine running Fedora12 (192.168.0.105). I thought this should be possible with NFS, but the above error message is what I keep getting, no matter what I try.
Here is my mount command:
Code:
mount 192.168.0.105:/mnt/dvd -t nfs /tmp/scaleo
The Fedora 12 machine has the NFS server running, and the corresponding entry in /etc/exports is
Code:
/mnt/dvd *(ro)
I thought this might be a firewall problem, but it persists even if I turn firewalls off on both machines (client as well as server.) Also, doing
Code:
ssh 192.168.0.105
is OK, so what is wrong with the route?

and it seems the mount succeeded. So, instead of nfs, one must write nfs4?

I am working on a cluster for a molecular dynamics class and I have to edit my FORTRAN code (only the newest and best for me!). In order to get through to the cluster I have to ssh in. The network on which the cluster resides is behind a firewall, so I have to ssh through the firewall into the network first.
this is fine, I can login and move files and folders as needed, including sftp-ing into host 1, then into the cluster so I can transfer files from cluster to host and then host to me. This gets rather tiresome, so it would be nice to edit the files in place.
The problem is that when I access my code with emacs it launches the emacs client on Host 1, with no mouse support. I know the purists will howl about how I should be using keyboard shortcuts, but I am a chemist and not a programmer, so the mouse is very nice for me. Is there any way I can perhaps mount the cluster using sshfs so that when I open my code it launches a local instance of emacs? Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I thought it was network related.

I got a bunch of machines (~10) that I share with my co-workers. I have appropriate .ssh file(s) set up so I don't get prompt for password when I try to ssh.Currently I ssh into these hosts and then do a top to check the load before I start using the machine. Because I don't want to be on a busy host. Can someone show me how to write a script that find a least-busy host given a list of hosts to check? (hardcoded is fine)

So here's the setup:
Ubuntu 10.04 host inbound port 22 open
FreeBSD 8.0 host no inbound ports open
Both hosts are running sshd currently. What would you do for the Ubuntu host to be able to ssh to the FreeBSD host? A tunnel?

The internal network is behind nat done by the PC Router. The TP Link is recieving wireless signal from outdoors and it has switching and basic routing capabilities. I'm using the PC router for better routing options.PC Router (or R for short) is a triple-booting machine - Linux, FreeBSD and Windows. It has two lan cards - external (ext_if) - 100Mbps Realtek 8139 and internal (int_if) - 1Gbps integrated Realtek 8169.The problem is that all traffic from R to the network is slow - about 5-20K, while the traffic in the oppoiste direction is all right - about 10MB that is fine for 100Mbps cables, NICs and switches. The problem persist no matter the OS the pc R is running.I've tried some debugging on the situation as follows:
- put another PC at the place of R - everything is fine. That exclude the possibility of damaged cables, RJ-45s, switches and etc.
- connected both of the NICs to the Internet while the internal network is being disconnected and they both work fine (no delays)
- traffic shaping is not running
- there is nothing in firewalls except NATing the internal network (and it is working fine). Actually these firewall rules have been operational for more than months and everything was fine untill a week or two ago.
- changed the internal NIC with another
- connected the internal network directly to the TP and all of the PCs are getting good network performance. Then connected the R machine to the TP as well and there was good performance between the internal network PCs and R.
- R has good performance to the TP. In fact everything has good performance directly to the TP (when not connecting trough R).
- the problem persist only between R and machines from the internal network.

I'm currently running 11.3 and decided I'd try upgrading to 11.4 following the instructions here: SDB:System upgrade - openSUSEUnfortunately, my attempts are defeated at the point of trying to refresh the new repos; I get the following message (for the oss repo, in this case):
Download (curl) error for 'url':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'download.opensuse.org'
With 11.4 replaced by 11.3 in the repo url, it refreshes just fine. The only repository that works when I change 11.3 to 11.4 is the Packman repo. I'm not really sure why the connection fails for 11.4 but not 11.3!
Further info: I have an old router with no IPv6 support, but have IPv6 disabled system-wide. I can enter the url for the repositories into firefox and they come up just fine - it's only with zypper/YaST that I get the above error message.I also tried upgrading using the network CD but ran into the same sort of problem. In this case it may be because the CD installer doesn't disable IPv6. (I didn't want to download the DVD at my connection speed, and the KDE live CD is not listed as suitable for upgrade).

For the past four or so days there have been a few updates for my system (32bit Karmic). I tried ignoring it at first to see if it would go away, but this is the third time I've seen these error messages.
Apt Authentication issue
Problem during package list update. The package list update failed with a authentication failure. This usually happens behind a network proxy server. Please try to click on the "Run this action now" button to correct the problem or update the list manually by running Update Manager and clicking on "Check". I click the "Run this action now" button and I get a second error,

I've been plagued with this problem for weeks. It finishes writing the DVD but after it ejects and reloads, it doesn't go through the verification process. Yet I never fail to hand-verify the DVD using 'cmp'.
In this case today I created a multi-directory DVD and had an .iso image made first. It's still sitting there in /tmp (with a backup copied to /opt so I can close out k3b). How would I verify the .iso against what's on the DVD? How does k3b do it? Hopefully this means a command line solution.
BTW what are the command line apps for burning and verifying a DVD? I'm not so hot on graphical apps for this task anymore.

I have Asterisk 1.2 running on a SPARC Solaris machine with a number of extensions, queues and so on configured and working well. Recently I wanted to create an IVR including a PIN verification system, enabling a user to call the number, hear a message (welcome, enter your PIN, etc), enter his PIN in the DISA application and hear another message afterwards without any further input. I can call the extension (IVR), hear the message and input my PIN, though after that I'm left with a dialtone and Asterisk waiting for me to enter a number(extension to call). If I do this, it forwards me correctly, though I'd prefer an intermediate step including a message for the user.
User calls number.
User is greeted with 'Enter your PIN,etc'.
User enters PIN code, followed by a '#'.
User hears another message 'Thank you. Now you can...etc'.
User then provides further input, etc.
Here's an excerpt from my extensions.conf:
Code:
; Lights control
exten => 9994,1,Answer
exten => 9994,2,Playback(welcome)
exten => 9994,3,Playback(beep)
