Ubuntu Networking :: PPTPD - VPN Works Only Partly?
Jul 14, 2011
I configured a PPTP server on Ubuntu 10.10. It works fine! Sort of. My MacBook running OS X 10.6 connects fine. But my iPhone can't seem to connect! The iPhone settings seem to be correct.
Here is the output of the Ubuntu syslog when I try to connect with the iPhone:
Code:
Jul 14 20:17:04 Ubuntu-Backup-Server pptpd[2601]: CTRL: Client 192.168.1.1 control connection started
Jul 14 20:17:04 Ubuntu-Backup-Server pptpd[2601]: CTRL: Starting call (launching pppd, opening GRE)
Jul 14 20:17:04 Ubuntu-Backup-Server pppd[2602]: Plugin /usr/lib/pptpd/pptpd-logwtmp.so loaded.
Jul 14 20:17:04 Ubuntu-Backup-Server pppd[2602]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0

I'm having trouble setting pptpd up for ubuntu10.04-minimal on my VPS.
I've used this guide: [URL] my Mac won't connect. pptpd is running.
There's no logs - not even a /var/log/syslog - why is that?
Here's my configs
pptpd.conf - http://pastebin.com/C4vpJBq9
pptpd-options - http://pastebin.com/aTUmApaLedit

I just setup a SuSE 11.3/64 server and I am trying to setup pptpd for a vpn. I noticed thatg the ppp0 (or any pppx) interface is non-exoisting and I think that that is the problem why my gre packages are not being sent by pptpd (as I have checked all other options). I have tcp port 1723, and protocol port 47 (gre) open on the firewall (SuSEfirewall2). I have traced the responses using tcpdump and only when the server sends gre to the remote client, the client never receives it (the 1723 connection is established). I checked the old server (SuSE 10.2) that worked the vpn fine, and the only thing missing on 11.3 is ppp0. All other hardware (routers, etc.) are the same. I suspect that pptpd tries to use ppp0 and the interface is non-existing. I can remotely ssh to the server, dns works, samba works, everything else works. Is it something I am missing? How do I create if ppp0 and link it to eth3, the internet gateway? Do I need ppp0?

I want to connect to a vpn server and I'm using debian 5.
I installed Kvpnc package but when I try to make a new profile I choose "Microsoft pptp" as vpn type and I receive the following message: the required daemons (pppd and pptpd) aren't availabale
Is there anyway to download required daemons in another computer and use them in my computer (I'm worried about dependencies)?

JGR still works -sort of. That is R works through JGR, but many of the nice features of JGR don't work. Notably, the object browser and package manager do not work, and the function hinting (pop up window showing arguments accepted by a function) dont work either.> JGR :: package.manager()
Error in JGR :: package.manager : package 'JGR' has no name space and is not on the search path
> object.browser()
Error: could not find function "object.browser"

As far as I can tell, this occured on upgrade to 9.10. I've tried using different Java environments, but no real success. I wonder if I should just go for a removal and reinstall of R and JGR?

I attempted to move my system from a fully functioning Lenny to Squeeze, and the upgrade is only partly done. I was using my Wlan connection, but it went away during the process, and won't wake up. The box is nowhere near a wired LAN.
I now have the latest kernel (uname -r ==> 2.6.32-5-686) The old Gnome GUI still functions. On re-boot, the old grub still does its thing successfully. The question is, since I have lost the wireless, can I install the firmware from a USB thumb-drive somehow? lspci ==> RaLink RT2561/RT61
So it looks like I need the package "firmware-ralink" to make the Wlan active once more. I have internet access from several other PC's using "another" OS, so I could download the the firmware and place it on a thumb-drive, but I don't know how to proceed from there. I may need additional packages as well, so please comment.

I've been running Ubuntu 9.10 on the notebook for a week. The OpenSuSE 11.2 install goes fine, but on first boot it only goes 8-9 seconds into the bootup and hangs. Sometimes I can get it to boot by adding "acpi=off" to the FAILSAFE options.
To be fair, I seemed to have an intermittent problem with Ubuntu 9.10 in a very similar way... But it was temporary, I have not had it since around the time I ran updates. I never needed acpi=off. Appears to have the newest BIOS. Several items on the "firmware test" on the CD boot display "fail".

This question is somewhat open ended, so I'll describe the specific issue, what I want to accomplish in general, and what I tried to do. It'd be a little long, but hopefully not too daunting. For quite a while my approach to multi-OS boots has been to install each OS to a separate disk. When I want to boot a specific OS I change the boot drive in the BIOS. I find this convenient for several reasons, but mostly because I don't get boot manager conflicts. If I remove a disk or change the OS on it, this doesn't affect the booting of other OS's.
Note that when I say multi-OS, this meant until now multiple versions of Windows. I've occasionally tried some linux distros on VirtualBox, but now I want to do a full install, and see if I can use it as a main OS. (What prompted this was the recent release of Wine 1.2 and the fact that my new job doesn't involve any Direct3D or DDI work. I've always been partial to the open source movement, but I'm also fine with Windows and never before felt I could make the move without losing key abilities). My plan was (still is, if I can get it to work) to use Linux for everyday e-mail, web browsing and such, play Windows games over Wine, and install Windows 7 in VirtualBox for Windows development.I currently have two disks, one with my main Vista x64 installation, and the other with a Vista x86 installation which I used for my previous job and I no longer need. This is the disk I want to use for the Linux installation. It has a lot of partitions but quite a bit of free space (since I copied a 80GB disk and 250GB disk into a 500GB disk and haven't taken advantage of the extra space). My first choice of distro was Linux Mint, since it's known to be friendly to new users, and I like the software installer on it. I installed Linux Mint in the past in VirtualBox, and the latest version also installed fine, and I found installation instructions explaining how to provide my own partitions, but the installation failed during the "configuring hardware" stage. If you're interested, more details are available in this thread on the Linux Mint forums. I didn't get any reply to that thread.
I thought then that I'd try openSUSE 11.3. The live CD looked usable enough, but when I tried to install I couldn't tell how to make sure that I don't get a boot manager which will try to give me access to the Windows versions on the disks. I don't want this, and what I'm really afraid of is that an install will screw the booting of Vista x64 on the other disk (which, granted, I can disconnect for the install, but I'd rather not). At that point I decided to post a question here.So hopefully you understand what I want to achieve. I don't much care which Linux distro I install, but I'd rather have one which gives me as much usability out of the box (or easily installable) as possible.

I have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.
Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.
I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.

Have a router running OpenSUSE 11.3. I have 3 interfaces
eth0 192.168.0.0/24 - local network
eth1 - The Internet if
eth2 - Citynet
I have configured routing and it works. I can browse the Internet from local net. However, I want to connect to my workstation (192.168.0.3) from Citynet interface. I've made masquerading rule in Yast it works just fine like a proxy do (on 192.168.0.2 local server). Now I need to run VPN server in my local net to connect from Citynet interface, and I have problems with it. I've configured pptpd on the router and it work for local network and I have a vpn server under Windows on 192.168.0.2
So my questions are:
1. What do I need to do in yast to allow vpn (pptp) ftom eth2 to 192.168.0.2?
2. What do I need to do in yast to allow vpn on router?
Some how I succeed to make redirection to 192.168.0.2 and it worked, but I've tried to change it to router and can't get it work again.
In all these cases client has the next message:
pptp[109]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
pptp[109]: Connection terminated.
pptp[109]: Modem hangu

I have a sony vaio vgn-AR71s with dual boot Vista and Ubuntu, no problems there.Since, over time, I messed up my previous Ubuntu setup while trying to get my wifi working, I decided to reinstall the whole thing and give it a fresh start. (as after two Kernel updates my wifi card drivers should be supported)I Reinstalled Vista and drivers after which I downloaded the latest Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD, burned to a disc and rebooted. When the Ubuntu installation was almost finished I got an error, the disc I was using got overheated (bad quality CD) and there was a problem copying certain files. However my hard disk was successfully partitioned and divided in half (1st partition Vista -NTFS and second Ubuntu -Ext4). But my laptop still boots directly into Vista ignoring the partly failed Ubuntu install, no boot option at startup. When I reboot using the LiveCD I can only install Ubuntu on a newly created third partition.
Is there any way I can continue or repair the previous ubuntu install? I searched this forum and the internet for options and hints yet don't seem to find an answer. The good thing is my wifi card is finally working (when I booted from the LiveCD it immediately detected wireless networks yeay)

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.
Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.
The output of some terminal commands are below.

I am a little confused with the way that networking works in Ubuntu (Lucid in particular). I switch my PC on and my network magically works (ie I dont understand what is configuring everything). I do have a DHCP server, but im not sure which process/file is configuring the interface. There is no entry for my wired interface (eth0) in /etc/network/interfaces.$ cat /etc/network/interfacesauto loface lo inet loopbackDoes this means that Network Manager is then responsible for configuring this interface? How does Network Manager configure this interface (are there config files somewhere that specify settings such as static IP and duplex)?

i am always using the latest version of ubuntu, but my main board of my acer5520g broke down under 9.10 last month, the acer company changed my main board and i installed 8.04-i386 LST for safety. but i find the wireless card does not work, i search the google for help,it seems i should install madwifi, but i found no valid download, after a lot of attempts i surrender. SO i put up this question i need a driver for my wireless card (notebook type acer5520g ,wireless card AR 5B91(detected under windows (though i am a big fan of linux and a supporter,i am using two systems and waiting for the 10.04 LST to save me from virus braced windows)
i even can not detect the wireless card under ubuntu 8.04 but it works ok in 9.04 and 9.10 after the installation.

I've got a Dell Inspiron mini 10 that has the Broadcom 4322 wireless chipset in it. I have NEVER got this thing to work satisfactorily despite the numerous tutorials online about getting this damned card to work. I thought everything would finally be fixed with 10.04 but no luck at all. I've tried the b43 diver (which isn't supposed to support the 4322) with no luck.
I also tried the restricted STA driver, which seems like it will work as it identifies networks and even connects to them! However, the speed is excruciatingly slow and connections drop like flies. This netbook is actually a friends that I convinced to let me put Ubuntu on and have them try it out, but they are most surely not going to be impressed if the wireless never works.

I have two Roboards that need to communicate with one another. I have sucessfully installed Ubuntu 9.04 using the 386 kernel based on instructions found online.I can use the GUI to set up an Ad-Hoc network using one Roboard ("Create New Wireless Network"), call it Manet, and connect to "Manet" using the GUI on the other Roboard and ping/ssh between the boards. However, when I try to create the same wireless network using the command line using:
ifconfig wlan2 down
iwconfig wlan2 key off essid 'Manet' channel 5 ap any
ifconfig wlan2 up
I don't see any entry in iwconfig under "Cell". It keeps giving me "Not Associated"When I try to enter the same information on the other Roboard to try to connect to the network, it doesn't connect and under iwconfig, I don't even see any entry for ESSID. Could somebody please tell me why it works when I use the GUI and not the command line.
