Ubuntu Networking :: Network Disconnected (You Are Now Offline)
Nov 20, 2010
The title message appears when I log in. Neither wired nor wireless network adapters show in ifconfig output. Network manager shows a simple networking disabled greyed out message. Both adapters work in live cd boot. Everything was working properly before; I'm not sure what happened.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04, complete noob, but I can't connect to the internet. I connect the ethernet cable, select auto ethernet and the icon animates for about 30 seconds. But then I get a notification "Wired network Disconnected - you are now offline".
Don't know what other information I should provide. I tried a few things from different posts like editing the dhcpclient.config but don't really know what I'm doing and none of these worked anyways. I'm not even sure if they were solutions to a similar problem! I'm using the same connection on my Mac OS 10.4.11 (different machine) and I have no problems. Could I use these same settiings in Ubuntu? I don't know what the different fields represent or what I should input in manual settings.

I'm having network problems and I have no idea how to fix it. At first, my internet connection was suffering on all computers on my network (Mac, Windows and Ubuntu 11,04). So, I disconnected my cable-modem and then reconnected. Nothing.... So, I rebooted my Windows machine and the internet came back on that computer.
I then went to my Ubuntu computer and clicked on "auto eth0" (per the way I interpreted instructions from the internet). The symbol turned from the "two arrows" to what looks like a wireless, looking for a signal. I thought that maybe I should just reboot, as I did with Windows. However, when I did reboot, that same wireless symbol was there, then a message came up saying:
Code:
Wired Network: You are now disconnected
I can't seem to get my internet connection back on my Ubuntu computer, though it is working on every other computer on my network.

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic Server with Xfce desktop, the problem is the network manager, it says it is disconnected, even though I am connected to my network and getting an internet connection. It wouldn't normally bother me, but I'm trying to setup a VPN using the network-manager-openvpn plugin. I put in the required details for the VPN connection, but as soon as I tick the "apply to all users" box, the information is lost. The information will remain if I don't tick that box, but it will not connect. when I try to select the VPN connection I just setup, nothing happens.
I've tried the exact same configuration on another desktop, running Ubuntu Karmic with Gnome desktop, the network manager works fine, my ethernet connection is showing as connected, and I can connect to the VPN no problem, the problem lies with the network manager in Xfce. Is there anyway I can get it to show as connected? it wont allow me to connect to the VPN otherwise, it's silly, because that adapter has a full working network connection.

I installed xubunto 10.4 on my pc the other day and every thing was working fine and then the next day my wired network card went down. So I restarted it and it say Wired Network Disconnected. I tried doing sudo ifconfig eht0 up to try and bring the card back online but nothing happens. I also tried reinstalling xubuntu on my computer. Again my internet works then starts freezing up so I restart it and my ethernet card goes down again. I have tried also plugging it into the second ether net port on my computer but that does not seem to work. Also I went into my dhclient-script and went to the bottom to look at my network card stuff.
It reads
#Changed from 'ifconfig $interface inet 0 down' - see Debian bug #144666 ifconfig $interface inet 0
exit_with_hooks 2 "$@"

i have limited experience with Ubuntu and Linux for that matter. i know my way around for the most part but i come from windows. anyway. i have 6 dell gx260 computers. i also have a netgear 8 port Ethernet switch. now im just trying to get the computers to see each other. simple for me in windows. but i have no idea where to start here. it just says connecting to eth0 then network disconnected. and thats it. for now im just working with 2 of the computers. the others are not set up yet. i have been googling for 3 days and got nothing that helps. (my goal after they see each other is to share files back and forth. and also to have one of them control the others with some type of remote desktop. but thats for another day.)

Recently, I had the courage of installing Fedora 11 on my laptop while risking of trashing my Windows XP. Fortunately, the installation went fine and windows and fedora seems to be working together. But I needed to reinstall Fedora because I didn't do the partitioning right. After that the problem arises. I couldn't connect to the wlan. The first installation it was working fine. Now I can't. I select the network, enter the password and then it just says "Disconnected" or something like that then nothing else happens. So I had to reinstall it again thinking I did something wrong on the installation. But still it wasn't working. But it seems to be working when I boot from the live cd. I must have messed up my network configuration.

On my Linux box, (which is a proxy, webserver, mailserver, etc. etc. etc.) I use static IP's. Network manager is turned off, but when you do that Firefox ALWAYS has WORK OFFLINE checked. I could use Network Manager but that's not really the right way, cause I need the servers to work in level 3, etc. as well...Anyways, anyone know a way to make FF behave if I use Static IP without NM?

This computer is using a Linksys WMP54G network adapter, and running Linux Ubuntu 8.10 with all of the latest updates. It was working fine for a couple months, then one day the internet quit working on it. I've tried playing with all of the settings, and can't get it to connect to the network. The windows computers in the house work fine. I also hooked my Linksys WUSB54GS USB network adapter and that worked right away. When I put the WMP54G back in, it will detect the networks but it won't connect. It gives the message, "the network connection has been disconnected", right away. Can someone please help with this. I work doing tech support for a small ISP and am excellent troubleshooting Windows but Linux is another story.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a brand new laptop, an install done by the company I ordered the notebook from. I have some limited experience with Linux and Ubuntu especially.I know that I'm not connected to a wired network. I haven't so much as plugged in a network cable, but the graphic appears erratically on the right hand side of the screen like I am connecting, then disconnecting. I've tried disabling the eth0 connection altogether, but no dice. I can't figure out how to make it stop.

I've run into a weird problem. Two of my linux machines (A and B, both running CentOS 5.5) are connected to the same wall ethernet socket via a hub. Bothf them are configured for static IPs. The trouble is that when machine B goes offline or hits a kernel panic, machine 1 goes offline too. What I've noticed is that in this condition the "route" output from machine A does not show any entry for the default gateway either The contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 for machine A are:
Code:

I installed 10.04 yesterday. The computer had an MS OS on it but I chose to format the entire HD for Ubuntu. The install seemed to go fine. When logged in there were updates available, and I installed all of them. After a reboot I tried getting on the internet and found that my network was 'disconnected'. I've checked the cabling, and that the LAN is still enabled in the BIOS. I assume the network had to have been functioning to do the original update. How do I figure out what changed. I've been reading the network section of a Linux book and came up with a little data that might help. My hardware is listed after the host file.
$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr e0:cb:4c:b6:6b:d6

I'm currently moving a lot (200G) from an external hard drive on one pc to an external hard drive on a laptop and I'm using scp to do it. I have a bt home hub 2.0 and as luck would have it my laptop keeps getting disconnected from the network.I'm worried that this will result in data loss or corruption as this has happened about 5 or 6t times just that I was aware of.

Since 11.2, I am using Knetworkmanager for getting connected to the internet. But is getting disconnected on its own every now and then. I used Kinternet when I was on 11.1 and it worked fine, Infact I would prefer kinternet over knetworkmanager anyday. But in suse 11.2, having both KDE3 and KDE4 libraries does make system work unexpectdly. I tried installing Kinternet once but after that kontact kept crashing (because of clashes between kdelibs3 and kdelibs4).Can anyone help me finding out the problem in knetworkmanger.. here is entry in /var/log/NetworkManager when I got disconnected..

Look Buddies,an interesting issue.
Once i just remove X11 libraries , gdm , gnome libraries and network-manager applet. from the ubuntu 9.10.
after these uninstallations, i used my internet successfully through text interface browsers which is links
but i understood graphical interface are important for my work.
Once again i installed
1. xfce4
2. network-manager applet
Everything Graphics,X11 sessions and accessing internet is working fine.
i can even browse through Mozilla firefox.
But my Network-Manager applet is always show as disconnected in taskbar. I understood some kind of understanding between network -configuration files and network-manager applet are broken
Why is the Network-Manager Applet is not responding?

I have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.
The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. The contents of ifconfig are:
eth0
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 001:aa0:91:a7:51
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets: 0 errors: 0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 carrier: 0
collisons: 0 txqueulen: 1000
RX bytes: 0 (0.0 B) TX bytes: 0 (0.0 B)
[Code]...
If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.

How to enable wifi? I downloaded and installed Debian 6.00 and as I couldn't get online with my Tenda USB Wireless Adapter. I downloaded Debian 6.00 again, this time the CD Net Install version with Firmware included. However, the added firmware version of Debian does not find my wireless either. My wireless adopter is shown as Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f:3072 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT3072 Wireless Adapter. There is a Network Icon in the Panel which when clicked shows "Create New Wireless Network". I have put in my ISP related network and my password and rebooted, but all I get is the message on my desktop:
"The Network Connection has been disconnected."
That isn't very polite, is it? Who has disconnected it and why remains a mystery to everyone except the culprit(s). I think I must have missed a basic step in the Wifi Enabling process. I checked the Use Permissions and everything is fine there, as User I have permissions to use modems and do networking and so forth. Also I should like to try "modprobe" but I see the package isn't in Synaptic Package Manager.

If i leave my laptop idle for sometime, my usb datacard connection gets disconnected. I know its a dial-up connection and if no application is accessing internet it disconnects on its own. The problem over here is when i click on the icon and click on activate it won't happen. So, i have to unplug the hardware and then re-insert it to make it work again.I went through a site, there they have mentioned a work around that is to keep a ping command always running. I'm fine with that, but why do we need to remove the hardware n re-insert it to make it connect to the internet again

I have always used it for a server so I never realized this was still an issue until I got my new PC today and went to load Debian / Gnome on it. It showed I was disconnected however I was able to browse the web fine. It appears that so many people have complained about this problem andI am trying to understand if there is a work around and a fix in the near future

I have OpenSuse 11.3 with VirtualBox on it, and with installed Oracle DB (on host OS).. but, sometimes this computer is disconnected, without it's gateway (adsl router)... and in that case, I cannot ping from virtual OS to host OS, or another virtual OS. I tried to use 'Host only' option within VirtualBox, but it doesn't work. What should I do? It seems that virtual machines requires some kind of gateway/router, but since machine is disconnected, it's not working.. how could I fix it?
